14.01.2022 Today (3rd of March) marks the 103rd anniversary of the assassination of Mar Benyamin Shimun, Catholicos Patriarch of the Church of the East, who was callously murdered by Kurdish warlord, Simko Shikak. Mar Benyamin Shimun was a leading figure within the Eastern Assyrians during the Assyrian genocide, responding to the Ottoman Empire with the following when his brother was kidnapped in order to extort the Patriarch: "It is impossible for me and my people to surrender after seeing the atrocities done to my Assyrian people by your government; therefore my brother is one, my people are many, I would rather lose my brother but not my nation."
