22.01.2022 Chrome browser critical update. Google has recently issued an update notice for chrome browser users including one new ‘critical’ security update as a result of a recently discovered vulnerability. In a Google Chrome blog post, Google has referred to the vulnerability as Use-after-free in speech recognizer. ... Further investigation by an independent security firm provided the following breakdown into what exactly this means: In some cases, use-after-free bugs can allow an attacker to change the flow of control inside your program, including diverting the CPU to run untrusted code that the attacker just poked into memory from outside, thereby sidestepping any of the browser’s usual security checks or are you sure dialogs. That’s the most serious sort of exploit, known in the jargon as RCE, short for remote code execution, which means just what it says - that a crook can run code on your computer remotely, without warning, even if they’re on the other side of the world. What can you do? Although Chrome users may have auto-update enabled on their browser, the roll-out of the updates may still be days or weeks from implementation. This could leave your system vulnerable until the update is installed. However, you can check and update your Chrome browser version manually with the following steps: - Check your current Google Chrome version by clicking the 3 vertical dots in the top right hand corner of your browser Help About Google Chrome (This will show your current version and show available updates). - If your Chrome browser is version 81.0.4044.113 or more recent, your browser has had this security update implemented and you are safe. - If your browser is earlier than version 81.0.4044.113, update your Chrome immediately.
