25.01.2022 Providing Quality Teaching is one of the stated goals of the Australian School of the Arts and ongoing involvement in Arts Industry best practice in their chosen artform is one of the ways in which our Arts Staff continue to deliver this. A perfect example of this is the recent release of Instrumental Teacher, Gareth Joness first album of original piano compositions. The album is titled Illustrations and represents a seven year labour of love, requiring commitment, tena...city, patience and many school holiday hours to complete. Each track is designed to take you on a journey from the streets of Gareths childhood to the beauty and grandeur of nature. There is a tranquillity and calmness to many of the pieces, while others express an immense amount of passion. Two out of the fourteen compositions are scored for voice and piano and fellow Teacher, Adam Lopezs voice provides an enchanting contrast to enhance the album. Gareth began composing during high school to foster his creativity and passion for the piano and continued to do so throughout University and his teaching career. These days, in addition to his timetabled piano lessons and accompanying and mentoring our Music Extension students, Gareth teaches composition to interested students of all ages. In his own words, I love the excitement of creating something from nothing and watching students faces light up when they hear their completed compositions for the very first time. We love your work Gareth Jones and all you do for our students! You can listen to Gareths album on all digital platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, Google Music and YouTube. #asta #artseducation Sheldon College, Brisbane

24.01.2022 In celebration of our Opening Night still to come!

24.01.2022 Welcome back for what promises to be another wonderfully creative year in The Australian School of the Arts! First up, the students of our Wicked Cast and Band returned to school early for the annual Summer Musical Camp. The Production Team was blown away by the extent of preparation the students brought to the Camp and keep exclaiming over what a GREAT show this is going to be! Performances will be staged at Redland Performing Arts Centre between 1-9 May 2020. Tickets will go on sale in early March through www.rpac.com.au.

24.01.2022 After much uncertainty following the cancellation of the sold out May performances at Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC), the Cast, Band and Crew of the Australian School of the Arts' production of Wicked the Musical were thrilled to finally bring the show to the Sheldon Event Centre stage, in a QLD Health approved COVID-Safe format. We loved every moment of it and hope you did too! #wicked #musicaltheatre #artseducation #asta

23.01.2022 Australian School of the Arts Alumna, Bekki Shearer (Class of 2012), recently spoke to us about her Arts journey post Sheldon College. Currently, Bekki is a Production Co-ordinator, with a host of television work and feature film credits to her name (Thor Ragnarok, Pacific Rim Uprising, Aquaman, Alien: Covenant, Kong: Skull Island) Driven by her passion for the performing arts, Bekki opted to join the ASTA Professionals Combined Performing Arts Program when she first came to... Sheldon College. However, units such as Voice, Accents and Dialects and Fight Choreography, as well as the Senior College Musical experience and stage managing the Year 12 ASTA Professionals Musical, soon led her to the realisation that her real passion is the behind the scenes world of production. As a result, Bekki elected to do a Bachelor of Creative Industries at QUT post Year 12, changing to a Bachelor of Fine Arts Film after the first year. Bekki soon realised that studying was not enough for her and went in search of an unpaid internship with a production company. Through hard work, dedication, a positive attitude and willingness to try her hand at anything, she has rapidly risen through the ranks, built her network of friends and contacts in the Industry and had some amazing experiences along the way. Bekki credits ASTA Professionals with building her self confidence and teaching her to problem solve, show initiative and be flexible; all qualities that have helped her create her own luck in her career journey to date. One example of this is her can do, one week transformation from automatic sedan driver to manual truck licence holder; all for the prize of 10 weeks of full-time work and countless other jobs since. Bekkis advice to young graduates is If it is something you are passionate about, believe in yourself, even if things dont work out as you initially imagined they would, and positive attitude, great work ethic, initiative, and a willingness to start at the bottom and try new things, opens doors and impresses people, helping you to build your network and make contacts. Well done Bekki. We are super proud of you and what you have achieved! #asta #artseducation Sheldon College, Brisbane

Video streaming will commence via iLinq at 7.30pm and we guarantee this will be a show not to be missed! #asta #performancemusic #artseducation

22.01.2022 One area of our Arts program that seldom finds itself in the limelight is our Film, Television and New Media Program - hardly surprising, when they are always the ones behind the cameras. The students and teachers involved in this program are always the first at any of our events and often the last to leave. They eat on the run, work for hours perfecting media content, spend entire events in the Media Box or behind the camera lens and then still go on to cut, edit and produ...ce the videos. As a result of their efforts, we are able to watch Assemblies and other events on livestream, re-watch our favourite moments from the likes of Just Dance and Arts Academy Awards and enjoy all of our productions enhanced with media-rich sets and backgrounds. To all the Teachers and Students in our Media Team, THANK YOU for your hard work, dedication and professional approach to all that you do. Enjoy your well-earned holiday! #mediaeducation #artseducation #filmandtelevision #ASTA #australianschoolofthearts #sheldoncollege See more

22.01.2022 The Australian School of the Arts Dance Academy offers tuition in a range of dance styles for students from Prep through to Year 12 and assists students in developing confidence, performance skills and artistry. The various dance groups have multiple performance opportunities every year, including College assemblies, the annual Arts Festival, eisteddfods and of course, our much loved annual dance celebration, Just Dance. This video, so cleverly crafted by Year 9 and 10 students in our ASTA Professionals Film, Television and New Media Program, beautifully captures the joy of dance that is so much a feature of this annual celebration. We hope you enjoy! https://vimeo.com/403560255 #artseducation #danceeducation #asta Sheldon Event Centre

21.01.2022 Our Arts Academy Awards Nominees have had a busy few weeks preparing for and performing for their Voting Panels. The Vocal, Acting, Dance and Instrumental Nominees performed individually in front of a panel of 8 judges, one of whom was an Industry Expert in the relevant field, whilst the Visual Art and Media Nominees submitted art and media works for viewing. Actor, Director and Producer, Helen Cassidy, was the Industry Expert on the Acting Panel and summed the entire proces...s up perfectly, "it is hard to believe these young artists are still only high school students. Congratulations to all Nominees and thank you for helping to build a thriving Arts culture here at Sheldon College. We can't wait to see what the future holds for you all! The 2020 Arts Academy Awards has been given the go ahead by Queensland Health and will take place on Saturday 3 October, in a COVID-compatible format. Tickets will go on sale in the first week of September. #artsacads #artseducation #asta #sheldoncollege See more

21.01.2022 The Australian School of the Arts' Performance Music Program is alive and well, despite the constraints placed on us by the events of 2020. Our premier instrumental ensemble, Symphonic Winds, performed a slightly abridged version of "Goddess of Fire" by Steven Reineke for one of the College Assemblies in August. This magnificent programmatic work for symphonic band is an offering to Pele, the Goddess of Hawaii’s volcanoes. If you listen carefully, you will hear the clacking of the lava and the explosion of the volcano near the end of the piece. #asta #artseducation #performancemusic #musiceducation #sheldoncollege

21.01.2022 The Australian School of the Arts SOLD OUT show run of Wicked the Musical, has sadly had to be POSTPONED! However, in our minds we DO still have a show to put on. Our Cast and Band rehearsals have continued in line with social distancing guidelines; our volunteers continue to take costumes home to work on; set and props continue to be made/sourced; and our Media students continue to work on the cinematics. All new plans will be subject to prevailing government restriction...s on mass gatherings in the months to come, so exactly when, where and how the show will go on, is yet to be decided. However, we are determined that it WILL and we can guarantee it will be a show worth waiting for! 18.01.2022 As part of the ASTA Professionals Program we regularly engage Arts professionals to run classes, workshops and Q&A sessions with our students. It was great to have one of our 2013 ASTA alumni students, Montanna Stoneman, back on campus this week to deliver an inspiring session about her journey as an early career artist. Montanna has carved out a niche role for herself as an aerialist performer and has worked multiple contracts for Disney shows internationally. She spoke to students about resilience, building their skill set and preparing for tertiary and industry auditions. Thank you Montanna for the great advice for our ASTA Professionals students! #artseducation #astaprofessionals

17.01.2022 Australian School of the Arts alumna, Jess Golle (Class of 2013), recently spoke to us about her Arts journey post Sheldon College. After embarking on a Bachelor of Entertainment Industries to learn the business side of the entertainment industry, Jess leapt at the opportunity to pursue a lifelong dream and audition for Tokyo Disneyland. Landing the roles, of Alice (Alice in Wonderland) and Wendy (Peter Pan), Jess embarked on the adventure of a lifetime that has allowed her... to travel, experience different languages and cultures and grow her network of friends and Industry contacts far and wide. Jess still speaks about the "actor's toolkit" she developed whilst in the ASTA Professionals Combined Performing Arts Program, as well as learning to do vocal warm-ups, read basic sheet music, interpret scripts and prepare for auditions. In her own words, ASTA Professionals equipped me with the necessary knowledge, skills and professional support to dream big and absolutely thrive within the Entertainment Industry, allowing me to secure my dream role of working internationally as a professional performer at Tokyo Disney Resort. Back home in Brisbane for now, Jess has a number of exciting irons in the fire and we can't wait to see what the future holds for her. #asta #astaprofessionals #artseducation See more

15.01.2022 Despite the threat of heavy downpours, the evening of Friday 6 March remained beautifully clear for the 2020 Sheldon College Bush Dance. The wide variety of rides and attractions were popular with students, young and old, with Dunk The Teacher the perennial favourite. Staff Band, The Mount Cotton Pickers, entertained the crowd for over 2 hours and the Year 12 Students kept the dance floor moving with some great line dancing. The Qld Rural Fire Brigade Association were our... guests of honour for the evening and many parents chose to make donations to this worthy cause. Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening of old fashioned entertainment and, in hindsight, a special opportunity for our Sheldon Community to connect prior to the onset of restrictions on public gatherings. Thank you, as always, to everyone involved in making this annual event possible. #asta #bushdance #sheldoncollege #mtcottonpickers See more

13.01.2022 The ASTA Professionals Combined Performing Arts Year 11 and 12 students in the Advanced Clowning unit celebrated their assessment by performing to a very appreciative group of Year 3 students. For this unit, each student studied a character clown technique (not to be confused with circus clown). Based heavily on the teachings of Philippe Gaulier, this unit requires high level risk taking and a fearless approach to performance, allowing each student to find their own unique character clown. The Year 3 students thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Yet another wonderful example of Love, Laughter and Learning at Sheldon College. #asta #artseducation #clowing #sheldoncollege

12.01.2022 You may have just witnessed the coolest thing we have ever done. These were the words of Director of Co-Curricular, Mr Darren Harvey, at the conclusion of the Year 11 & 12 ASTA Professionals Combined Performing Arts Term 4 Studio Performance Project, staged this week. This project represented a 20 minute summary of the best of Hamilton the Musical, as selected by the students themselves. Hamilton is what is known as a rap musical, meaning that these students had to h...one a new skillset in the learning and performing of the internationally popular songs and dialogue. Their exceptional performance, put together in the space of a mere five rehearsals, included four of their favourite songs, with choreographic and harmonic content of their own creation. Congratulations to everyone involved and to Mr Jacob Ballard for guiding the students through this creative process. It was thoroughly enjoyed by the limited live audience, as well as the parents watching from home via the live stream. Fingers crossed we will get to see this awesome performance one more time before the end of this year! #asta #artseducation #musicaltheatre #hamilton #sheldoncollege See more

12.01.2022 The Nominees for the Australian School of the Arts 16th annual Arts Academy Awards were announced today. The depth of Arts talent here at the College ensures that its never an easy task for Staff to choose just 5 students in each category and there are many who would have been disappointed. However, our congratulations must go to all those who were nominated in the Media, Vocal, Acting, Dance, Instrumental Music, Visual Art and Best Emerging categories. Your hard work, en...thusiasm and commitment has paid off and we wish you all the best for the upcoming voting panel process. This years' Arts Academy Awards will take place on Saturday 3 October. Whilst we all know this date is far from ideal, it represents the best opportunity to provide students with one of their favourite annual Arts milestones, despite continuing Covid restrictions and the constraints placed on us by the Academic calendar. 11.01.2022 The Australian School of the Arts sold out season of Wicked the Musical may have had to be postponed and social distancing requirements may have impacted on rehearsals, but the Cast, Band, Crew and Production Team are not giving up. Students are still rehearsing, cinematography and costumes continue to be created and plans are afoot for alternative dates. All we now await is a green light! 11.01.2022 In a year in which so much has been postponed, cancelled and curtailed, The Australian School of the Arts has kept our Arts Culture thriving by continuing to ensure our students have a diverse range of unique performance opportunities. One example of this was the lunchtime Performance Music concerts staged over a number of weeks in our SLC Courtyard and attended by students and staff from all levels of the College. Ensembles given the opportunity to showcase their performanc...es included Soul Band, Rock Band, Big Band, Stage Band, Drumline, Eve Vocal Ensemble, Clarinet Quintet, Year 11 and 12 Music Classes and our very own Staff Band. A combination of great music, balmy weather and relaxed atmosphere ensured these concerts were a hit with students and staff alike and something we definitely hope to repeat in the future. #artseducation #performancemusic #asta #sheldoncollege See more

10.01.2022 The Australian School of the Arts new Adult Sewing Classes are well under way and participants are sewing up a storm! The classes cater for individual sewer needs and experience and cover two main topics - Industrial Sewing Techniques and How to Personalise Patterns For A Couture Fit. Whilst there is set content to cover in the classes, students still have plenty of time to work on personal projects (and socialise ). In the words of two of the participants: I would hi...ghly recommend the course. Initially I wanted to do the couture course, however decided to do the industrial sewing techniques as my introduction and am very glad I did! I have really enjoyed each week and am learning to adjust patterns to fit. I am loving the class whole heartedly, as it gives me that nudge to do something I love but always seem to put on the back burner due to a busy lifestyle! I have also had the chance to connect with a gorgeous group of ladies that I didnt already know. Classes are open to Sheldon College Parents, Grandparents and Alumni and booking for Term 2 is now open via https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=617272&. 08.01.2022 In different circumstances, tonight would have be the Opening Night of our sold out 2020 season of Wicked the Musical. Whilst devastated that the shows have had to be postponed and despite the social distancing requirements to adhere to, our Cast, Band, Crew and Production Team are still working towards new show dates later in the year. So, to mark this occasion, we thought we would share this video of the 20 year old tradition they still hope to honour. Anyone who has eve...r participated in an Australian School of The Arts Musical will remember the Ram Sam Sam" led by show Director, Mr Darren Harvey. Every year, just before going on stage, the Cast unite to warm up and focus ahead of their performances. According to Mr Harvey, this tradition originated way back in our very first Musical in 2002, when then Dance teacher, Ms Kristy Hemmings, took responsibility for the physical warm up for the show. Whilst our pre-show rituals have evolved immensely since then, the message is still very much the same. The focus is on coming together as a team and sharing the excitement that can only be found in anticipatory moments like these. Please enjoy! See more

08.01.2022 Australian School of the Arts Alumnus, Mitchell Bourke (Class of 2014), recently spoke to us about his Arts journey post Sheldon College. Under normal circumstances, Mitch can be found in Sydney, working on a variety of stage, television and film productions, whilst maintaining his day job to fund his evolving career. Mitch maintains his greatest learning in the Industry so far has been the importance of being a generalist as an artist, with acting, dance and vocal skillsets... up your sleeve, as you never know what you will be called upon to deliver. He also provides an interesting insight into the nuances of working in different aspects of the Industry. According to Mitch, working in film is fast paced with little time to rehearse, the energy required is more subtle and suppressed and the atmosphere more intimate. In contrast, working in theatre comes with the luxury of time for rehearsal and collaboration, with performances that are big and explosive. Mitch credits the ASTA Professionals Program with helping him to find his passion and giving him a vision for what he wanted to do post school. As a result, when faced with the option to pursue either a Business or Arts degree, he was able to follow his heart and accept a place in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Acting course at QUT. ASTA Professionals also taught Mitch the importance of having fun as an artist, whilst being committed, disciplined, punctual, prepared and willing to give it go. Mitchs Arts journey has equipped him with plenty of advice for young artists. Firstly, Take your time, this is not a race. You may not be a lead in a Musical or receive an award, but if you know you love something, slow down and persevere with it. Secondly, he would encourage young artists to keep learning in order to maintain artistic momentum, whether through self-directed learning or tertiary study; and finally Mitch states, There are lots of people with talent, but its the hard work ethic that translates into success. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us Mitch. We are so impressed with your hard work and dedication and wish you every success in the future. #astaprofessionals #artseducation See more

07.01.2022 The Australian School of the Arts' 16th annual Arts Academy Awards was a celebration of hope and optimism that few students will have experienced in 2020. Following a Queensland Health approved COVID-Safe Plan, the event featured a full night of spectacular student entertainment, including performances by the Arts Academy Band, Choir, Dancers, Vocalists and Award Nominees. 06.01.2022 On Friday 7 August, the Sheldon College Curriculum Drama Team hosted our annual Drama Night. Performances varied in style and context, from the twisted Revolting Rhymes story of Cinderella, to the challenging performances of the Year 12 Absurdism unit. Despite having had fewer opportunities to perform this year, these student...s produced another fantastic evening of entertainment! Our grateful thanks go to Mr James and his Media Team for organising the live stream, and to those parents, staff and students who supported from home. 05.01.2022 This week, a mere 6 weeks after the closing night performance of Wicked the Musical, rehearsals started for our 2021 Senior College Musical, Les Misérables. The number of students who signed on to audition was astonishing and their enthusiasm contagious. The standard of talent amongst those auditioning for the lead roles was remarked upon by all members of the Production Team, thereby making some of the final decisions exceptionally difficult. Congratulations to everyone w...ho auditioned! We know it can be a scary and intimidating experience, but also one filled with plenty of growth and learning opportunity. The Cast and Band have now been announced and rehearsals are under way. All that we now need is a decision on dates and venue! Watch this space. #asta #musicaltheatre #artseducation

05.01.2022 With the musical score of Wicked the Musical finally closed and consigned to the shelf, it is worth taking a moment to reflect on the magnitude of what our extremely talented, motivated and resilient Musical Band students have achieved through this on again, off again 2020 Musical journey. Wicked is an extremely challenging score for the seasoned professional, let alone school age students. Mark Charters, a professional drummer, refers to the Wicked score as a Beast and co...uld not believe that our young students were playing this show. However, despite the challenges of this score and the fact that it was the very first musical experience for a number of our musicians, our final product was outstanding and of such a professional standard that many patrons thought they were listening to a professional recording rather than live music. Whether new to the College Musical experience or seasoned veterans, all students were pushed way beyond their comfort zones and have, as a result, developed tremendously as musicians over the course of the year. From our young flautist Noor, who had to learn to play extremely challenging parts on multiple instruments she had never touched before; to Ian Eilander, who only started playing the bass a year ago; to Will Bye on guitar, who is quite simply good enough to play in the professional show if it ever comes to town again; they each have their own Musical Journey story. As a group of young musicians, they rose beautifully to the challenges both 2020 and the Wicked score threw at them and have certainly Defied Gravity this year, achieving what many would have said was impossible. Congratulations to you all! #artseducation #performancemusic #musicaltheatre #wicked See more

04.01.2022 Due to the disruption to this years Australian School of the Arts Drama Academy Program, we have pressed pause on our much anticipated Junior Musical production of Aladdin Jr. Instead, we are excited to announce that the Year 7 and 8 Musical Theatre students are working on a Disney mashup that highlights and celebrates many of our favourite Disney characters and their much loved musical moments. 04.01.2022 Our annual Australian School of the Arts Middle and Junior College Arts Festival takes place on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 November. The headline act of the festival is, as always, our Year 7 & 8 Musical Theatre production. However, when students were forced home for several weeks earlier this year, it became apparent that they would not be able to accomplish their usual goal of staging a full Junior Musical this year. The Production Team thus considered a range of options ...and felt that the creation of an ensemble work that would showcase the individual strengths and talents of each student would be the best path forward. The result is a new and untold story about the well-known character of Genie and a journey through a Magical Storybook; a Disney mashup that highlights and celebrates many of our favourite Disney characters and their much loved musical moments. The Cast and Production Team have persevered through Covid lockdown, rain, hail and blackouts to bring this production to fruition and would love to see you in the audience! 03.01.2022 The Australian School of the Arts Performance Music Department boasts more than 30 ensembles that, under normal circumstances, rehearse weekly. Social distancing restrictions may have impacted on the normal running of things, but they have not prevented our keen musicians from learning new material, practising and doing what they love, making music together. The students of Soul Band, one of our premier music ensembles, have spent the first few weeks of Term 2 learning Golden, by Cory Wong, from home. This performance features Quinn Chambers (Year 11) on vocals and William Bye (Year 12) on guitar. Amazing job everyone! #asta #artseducation #soulband #golden
