21.01.2022 Sara, one of the social workers at A Start in Life is off on Maternity Leave today. We asked Sara what she finds most rewarding in her role. One of the best things about my job is witnessing the development of students. Seeing them mature and become more confident and focused during their time in the program. Once a support plan is in place, students often become more ambitious with their goals and what they want for their futures, and its been very positive to observe. Saras passion, enthusiasm and quirky humour will be missed by all and we wish her all the very best for the impending arrival of her second baby!

20.01.2022 Merry Christmas from the team at A Start in Life, and from the students and families we assist. Thanks for the support you provided to give a brighter future to those in need during 2016.

18.01.2022 There are many young Australians whose learning and development is impeded by circumstances beyond their control. A Start in Life currently has 200 of these students on our books needing help to avoid disengaging from their education. While every individual has the opportunity to attend school, those who are less fortunate simply cannot afford to access all the items which make up a full education. With your support, these students wont miss out. Make a donation to A Start i...n Life to support young Australians in need. 14.01.2022 A Start in Life is proud to be one of the featured charities supported by Grill'd Burgers Local Matters. Throughout the month of December, visit any Grilld Sydney CBD store, buy a burger and drop your token into the A Start in Life jar. The charity with the most tokens will receive a donation from Grilld to assist with the work they do. Eat well and do some good for others at the same time!

14.01.2022 We know we've been a little quiet but our start to the year at A Start in Life has been massive! None of this would be possible without the support of our community and we wanted to take a moment for a shout out - Nadia Jaajaa - A student of ours and a great supporter who fund raised for us last year. - Cliff Hobson - Currently in the process of selling The Entertainment Book to raise funds! - Wid Jasem - A volunteer we couldn't have managed without-she's set us up brilliantly for the upcoming Prize Giving Ceremony. More updates on our exciting year to come soon!

13.01.2022 Matts favourite moment from year 10 last year, was learning how to extract DNA from Strawberries in Biology class. This year his goals are to have set times for study, improve in maths and make new friends. We are excited to be helping Matt reach his goals in 2017 and beyond!

13.01.2022 A heart-felt thanks to the girls at Meriden School for their creativity in fundraising for service week. The girls held a bake sale, sold succulent plants (donated from Flower Power Nursery) and had a wishing tree where students could write about what school means to them. Through their amazing efforts they raised more than $2,000 for A Start in Life to help disadvantaged Australian youth access educational equality. Well done girls! Special thanks to Jade, Maryann and Hannah - pictured here delivering the cheque to our CEO Neil Robinson.

13.01.2022 Our social workers are busy pulling together end of year education reports, and developing support plans for the year ahead based on individual student needs. Reading this tutors feedback about the remedial tutoring you helped provide, is a great reminder of the efficacy of A Start in Life's tailored model of support. "Joanna has attended every tutoring session. She is hardworking and persistent and always puts in 100% effort. Reading comprehension has been a major focus of her tutoring sessions and her critical analysis skills are improving. The individual sessions are building Joanna's confidence, which in turn is seeing an improvement in both her literacy and numeracy capabilities." To find out more http://tinyurl.com/j3zno7p

12.01.2022 For our recent Spring edition of our Brighter Futures newsletter, we interviewed some students previously supported by A Start in Life to see where they are now and how our support has made a difference in their lives. We are of course incredibly proud of their achievements, and the achievements of all our former and current students, whom without our support may have been left behind. If you would like to receive our Brighter Futures newsletters and be kept up-to-date on our work and our students' progress - and to see where some of our past students have ended up - please email [email protected] or phone us on (02) 9264 3017.

All of our students did so well to not only remain engaged in their education, but to improve in their school work and grades over the 2015 academic year. We are so proud of them and trust that their Student Sponsors will be too! if you have any questions regarding your sponsored student's Annual Student Update, or if you would like to learn more about our Student Sponsorship program, please call us on (02) 9264 3017.

09.01.2022 Amee and Noah have really grown thanks to your support this year. Amee’s grades have got better and she is happy to be catching the bus to school, looking good in her uniform and having the things she needs for classes. Noah takes such good care of his new uniform and school shoes. He enjoys being just like the other kids and able to go on school excursions, camp and join swimming lessons. Both kids like knowing there’s someone who cares about them, not just me. Thank you... for being there for us. 08.01.2022 Every day, teachers are making a difference educating and inspiring young people. Today is World Teachers' Day where we take an opportunity to acknowledge our teachers and say thank you for the significant contributions they make in our classrooms, communities and to the lives of the students assisted through A Start in Life. A teacher affects eternity; they can never tell where their influence stops. Henry Adams

06.01.2022 On Saturday, we were delighted to recognise the efforts and achievements of some of our brightest students at our Annual Prize Giving Ceremony. Thank you to Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney for hosting the event and to the small group of long-term, deeply valued supporters for joining us, our students and their families on the day. Congratulations also to the 19 students who took home not only their well-deserved certificates and prizes, but also a great sense of accomplishment! We could not be more proud!

06.01.2022 One computer that performed a single function, letters typed on typewriters and accounts done by hand.. Things have changed a lot in the 23 years that Steve, our Accountant, has been working for A Start in Life. Today is Steves last day with our organisation before he starts on a new chapter in his life retirement! Steve leaves with many fond memories. In particular, he remembers a tertiary student who worked hard to finish his degree, despite all the challenges life threw... his way, he graduated, started work and is now married with a family of his own and a successful career that saw him move out of his disadvantaged circumstances. Steve says he is constantly impressed by the hard work and dedication of the students supported by A Start in Life. Steve mentions that one of the scariest moments he experienced in his career was when his wife Angela commenced working at A Start in Life too! Goodbye Steve, you leave with our very best wishes. 06.01.2022 Its annual report time and the team at A Start in Life are busy pulling together all the results from last year. We have noticed a significant increase in the number of tertiary students now completing double bachelor degrees. Many students feel that a double degree is necessary to increase their opportunities for securing employment. However, double degrees mean longer time spent at Uni and increased educational costs, like text books, accommodation and course fees. For all the tertiary students supported through A Start in Life this opportunity would not be available without the generous support of donors. To find out more visit http://www.astartinlife.org.au/

06.01.2022 With each new academic year comes fresh opportunities for young students to explore new interests and gain new skills and knowledge. But no matter how bright a student, or the potential they have, when their lives are hampered by financial and social insecurity, their chances of reaching that potential are diminished. By donating to our Back to School campaign, you will help the students we assist to know that their educational needs will be met throughout the academic year. This provides the stability they need to focus on their studies and to work to the best of their ability. Create a brighter future for a young person in need today http://tinyurl.com/zfyp34l

05.01.2022 Get your running shoes on and help create a brighter future for young Australians! 05.01.2022 Thank you to our supporters for helping us in our efforts to "bridge the gap" between the level of support we were previously providing to students and the present day costs of a well-rounded remedial education. We are now over halfway to our goal!

04.01.2022 Today is International Youth Day. One of the key themes for 2016 is eradicating poverty, a message that is fundamental to A Start in Lifes cause. One of the greatest gifts that education provides to disadvantaged Australian youth is an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. Through supporting Australian children living in poverty with the costs of their education, we hope to make positive changes to their lives, the lives of their families and communities, and the world we live in. 04.01.2022 Can you guess what Emerald wants to be when she grows up? We love hearing about the aspirations of the students who are assisted through A Start in Life. We believe every child should have equal access to the support they need to fulfill their dreams and goals, just like Emerald who wants to be a Marine Biologist. 04.01.2022 One thing I would like to make very clear - without the assistance received through A Start in Life - I would never have been able to develop as a musician. I am eternally grateful to the generosity I received. The vision for a better future is something that one cant quite quantify in value, because it is enormous and life changing. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me, for supporting me, throughout not the easiest of times. Natalia Raspopova, Professional Conductor Natalia recently completed her tenure as an Assistant Conductor at the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. In 2017, she will be working extensively with Orchestras in New Zealand and Melbourne.

03.01.2022 The A Start in Life team - and the students and families we assist - wish all of our supporters a safe and happy Christmas. We thank you so much for your support in 2015! Our office will be closed from tomorrow, 23 December, and will reopen on Monday, 4 January. In the meantime, if you would like to help us prepare for the Back-to-School rush and ensure our students have the supplies they need to flourish in 2016, you can still do so via the Donate Now app or by visiting our website. Again, thank you and seasons greetings to all.

01.01.2022 January is a very busy time of year for our Student & Family Management team, who are currently submerged in Annual Student Updates, school reports for the 2015 academic year, and applications from students and families for support in 2016. So to receive this lovely 'thank you' card from a group of sisters who we support in Sydney's south was a delightful surprise. Knowing that we are making a difference to young people's lives is what keeps us going in times like this.

01.01.2022 Wishing all our students good luck in their final exams, we're thinking of you...
