25.01.2022 Let's talk about grass and how grasses impact #asthma and #allergies. Allergies to grass are very common and symptoms may present in many ways; including nasal symptoms (runny nose, stuffiness, sneezing), asthma, and eye symptoms (itchy, watery/red eyes). People can also have skin rashes (hives or skin welts) after exposure to grasses, but this is much less common. You are more at risk of a grass allergy during the time of year when grasses are producing pollen, which happens... to be from spring onwards. If you experience an allergy to grass, you may want to take a look at this article by Healthdirect Australia, they also have an online symptom checker. https://bit.ly/3mEiaGv

24.01.2022 Are you an avid gardener who needs to hang up the gloves when #pollen season comes around? We know for gardeners with #asthma or hay fever, plants and gardens can bring about endless sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion, scratchy throats, or asthma flare-ups. But you shouldn’t have to sacrifice a beautiful garden! You may recall that last spring we called in a botanical expert, Dr Ed Newbigin of the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne, and put together the Golde...n (or should we say Green) Rules of Thumb to help you have allergy-friendly gardening experience. Check them out here https://bit.ly/3mqnWv1

24.01.2022 There are a number of pollen monitoring apps and websites such as AirRater and Auspollen that are a useful resource for people with #asthma and hay fever over spring, however, there is no one provider that covers all states. This is something we are working towards as part of our AirSmart positioning. You can view the pollen count for available states here https://bit.ly/3bUsQfP If you do not see your state or territory listed, it is likely there isn’t one available and therefore we ask you to be vigilant and prepared when it comes to your asthma and allergies.

24.01.2022 Asthma Australia welcomes new evidence presented in the ‘Australian Bushfires 2019/20; Exploring the short-term impacts’ report, hoping the new data will spur on action around air quality. Australia is behind other countries in terms of monitoring and reporting and providing the community the access to tools to better avert being exposed to poor air. We need to learn from those leading in this space and we need investment put into action. Asthma Australia is seeking support... from the Australian Government and state and territory governments to establish an #AirSmart Campaign but are yet to receive funding despite several recommendations put forward by state inquires and the Royal Commission. 24.01.2022 Research indicates there is a link between anxiety, depression, and asthma. More than two million Australians have asthma and more than three million Australians are living with depression or anxiety. One in five women and one in eight men will experience depression at some time in their life. On average, one in four people will experience anxiety. For people who live with asthma, this figure is even higher. Download our free information brochure here https://bit.ly/3jb3We2

22.01.2022 Women with #asthma account for 13.9 per cent of the ACT population and are 1.3 times more likely to experience risk factors leading to type 2 diabetes, which includes smoking, an unhealthy diet, risky alcohol consumption and low levels of physical activity. Asthma Australia has recently added the AUSDRISK screening tool to The COACH Program, which already offers comprehensive and individualised care, and can now help women to avoid a high likelihood of developing type 2 or g...estational #diabetes. Asthma Australia is encouraging women with asthma in the ACT to step into a healthier version of themselves simply by making a call to 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462) and checking their eligibility for The COACH Program. 20.01.2022 Canberra is recording high levels of pollen, which has led to thunderstorm asthma warnings. We encourage anyone with pollen triggers to take extra precautions and stay inside. 20.01.2022 People with asthma will often see more than one health professional over the course of time, even multiple visits to different emergency departments. We often hear that people with asthma get rather exhausted retelling their health history, which can be complex and traumatic, and that doctors appreciate the opportunity to assess a health record. Lifecard is all about more complete information with a holistic picture that enables more insightful conversations between a patient and their doctor. We see this partnership as a great opportunity for people with asthma to embrace a health tool, and another step toward individualised, personcentred health care. 20.01.2022 New project funding is enabling locals from the small towns of Peterborough, Jamestown and Orroroo in regional South Australia to lower their high risk of asthma attacks, under a unique community-driven program led by Asthma Australia. The project has aimed to understand why asthma hospitalisations are sitting 45 per cent higher than the national average in these small communities, and to seek grassroots solutions to help locals breathe better. Asthma Australia CEO Michele Go...ldman said the early work of the project enabled Asthma Australia to understand the community and barriers to better asthma management they are facing. 15.01.2022 Courtney Partridge-McLennan was a bubbly and cheeky 19-year-old country girl living in regional New South Wales. Last year, bushfire smoke triggered a sudden and aggressive asthma attack, taking Courtney’s life in the early hours of the morning. She was found in her bed with her phone torch on and her reliever medication quite close to her. She didn't have time to ask for help, says her sister Cherylleigh. As the bushfire season approaches, please don’t let another Auss...ie die from asthma if it can be avoided. Please donate now, to help save lives. 14.01.2022 When I got a call from contract tracers, I was completely shocked Ebony has spent 2020 in isolation. For 29yearold Sydney resident Ebony Wightman, a combination of last summer’s bushfire smoke and the Coronavirus pandemic has posed her with lifethreatening challenges and significant hurdles to continuing her healthcare not what you’d consider a great sequence of events, but she has found a way. 14.01.2022 Every year there is a well-documented spike in asthma flare-ups when children return to school after the summer break. This results in a significant increase in Emergency Department visits, hospitalisations, and days off school. Education staff and health professionals play a key role in supporting children, parents, and carers to stay safe and manage the risk of asthma flare-ups at the ‘back to school’ time. As such, Asthma Australia is undertaking a 'Back to School' campai...gn commencing mid-January 2021. The aim of the campaign is to support and educate parents to take the correct preventative steps to manage their child’s asthma in readiness for their return to school next year. Below are ways in which Education staff and health professionals can support parents and carers with asthma in children in preparation for 2021. 11.01.2022 How often should you wash your sheets, pillows, doona and mattress? And when is it time to throw them out? According to respiratory expert and friend of ours Professor John Blakey from Sir Charles Gairdner hospital in Western Australia, If you didn’t wash your bedding for a year it would be more than a kilo heavier just because of dead skin. https://bit.ly/3jLv1W9

10.01.2022 Have you been hearing the term ‘thunderstorm asthma’ being used a lot lately? Maybe even your local doctor has been talking to you about it? If so, that’s great! We need people aware of and talking about it. The term thunderstorm asthma became commonly known back in 2016 when a dangerous weather event caused 10 deaths and thousands of people to present to hospitals and call ambulances with breathing difficulties across Melbourne. Thunderstorm asthma can occur when rye gras...s pollen is abundant. Pollen is collected up into thunderstorms, bursts into tiny particles, and breathed deep into our lungs. This can occur during some storms in the warmer months. Thunderstorm Asthma puts people with asthma and hay fever (allergic rhinitis) at risk. 08.01.2022 Asthma symptoms can be triggered by spray deodorants and strong scents including incense, perfumes and particularly citronella this time of year. It is important that you take preventative measures but it is also extremely helpful to inform friends, family and people within your workplace that strong scents may trigger your #asthma and #allergies. To help, we created a 'Keep the Sprays Away' poster that you can pop up in your workplace. ... Download it via our website here https://bit.ly/31qiyzZ

07.01.2022 Until recently, only in-person spirometry training was available in Australia by a select handful of providers, greatly limiting capacity. 04.01.2022 ASTHMA and COVID-19 RESEARCH RESULTS: Asthma Australia seeks to find answers to the significant questions and challenges facing Australians with asthma. During the first outbreak of COVID-19, we sought to answer the question that was worrying you and your families; if I have asthma, am I more at risk of acquiring COVID-19? Should I self-isolate? And if I get it, will I die? Through our National Research Fund, we commissioned a study with The George Institute for Global Hea...lth to find out if we could answer these questions. We did that. And we’re pleased to bring you answers. People with #asthma don’t appear to be at greater risk of acquiring #COVID-19 than the rest of the population. Most people with asthma are not contracting COVID-19 at all and if they do, they are equally likely to recover. People with asthma are like everyone else and need to keep up with protective measures against COVID-19 and must try to get their asthma under control. Read more about the study here https://bit.ly/3ohHMKA

02.01.2022 According to a weekly pulse survey of nearly 300 people by Asthma Australia, 29 percent of respondents recently reported their asthma had been triggered by increased use of cleaning products during COVID-19 in their homes, workplaces, and in public areas. Of these, people with severe asthma or people with asthma who worked outside the home were more likely to report symptoms. Employers are encouraged to check if anyone on their staff is sensitive to health impacts from cleani...ng chemicals and to consider ways to reduce their risk, such as switching from sprays to wipes, and choosing allergy-friendly products where appropriate. https://bit.ly/3j9R8UZ To help, we’ve created a ‘Keep the sprays away’ poster that people can use in the workplace https://bit.ly/3dHKVyx

01.01.2022 Alongside Tammy, Chris and their family, we are honoured to launch Courtney’s Fund, which was shared on 60 Minutes Australia last night.
