23.01.2022 Behind Milana’s beautiful smile lurks an invisible burden. Born early, Milana’s parents Karin and Adam were warned she could have lung problems as she grew. And they were right. This little girl has had to fight for every breath, most of her short life. Diagnosing asthma can be difficult, especially in young children.... Like many families, her parents have endured the stress of multiple appointments and frequent visits to the emergency department while trying to understand Milana’s condition and how to manage it as best possible. 20.01.2022 In a blink of an eye, school is back!! It can be easy to fall out of routine when you are on holiday so here are some tips to help you and your child prepare for returning to the classroom next week. 1. Visit your child's doctor and update their Asthma Action Plan.... 2. Talk to your child's teacher and school - make sure they are aware of your child's condition, the signs of a flare-up and their asthma management plan, and don't forget to let them know if anything has changed. Also, check they have a copy of your child's current Asthma Action Plan. 3. Work with your child's teacher to look for ways to reduce exposure to known triggers. 4. Check your child's medications are in date. 5. Talk to your child's sports teacher and coaches - they play an important role in supporting your child to participate in sport safely and confidently. 6. Reduce exposure to germs - simple steps such as washing hands with soap, using hand sanitiser and teaching children 'cough etiquette' such as coughing into their elbow can help reduce exposure to germs. 7. Get vaccinated - this includes the flu vaccine each year when it is available for your child, yourself and your family. Should you have any questions about asthma, medications or asthma first aid, call our Respiratory Health Team on (08) 9289 3600 to book your free consultation. #asthmaready #backtoschool

20.01.2022 We are now well into the wetter months of the year and with increased dampness, often comes mould. It can occur indoors and outdoors and for many people with asthma and other respiratory conditions, mould can be a potential trigger or cause an allergic reaction. For people with COPD, it can also lead to a fungal lung infection. Find out where to look for mould and how to remove it: https://bit.ly/2VV6Smj

18.01.2022 The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and flowers are sending pollen into the air. Uh oh! Allergic Rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, can make managing asthma more difficult. Almost 80% of people with asthma have allergic rhinitis. For some people, it can strike at specific times of the year like right now as we head into Spring! For others, it can hang around all year. In either case, if you have asthma and hay fever affects you, it is important to work with you...r doctor and pharmacist to identify the best course of action for your individual circumstances and reduce the risk of a severe asthma flare-up. 17.01.2022 As spring season approaches and flowers start to bloom, its a timely reminder that hay fever triggers can cause havoc for many people. Those annoying allergic rhinitis (hay fever) symptoms like a runny, itchy or blocked nose, sneezing, itchy eyes and a tickly throat can have a detrimental impact on peoples health and wellbeing including their sleep. In addition to understanding hay fever triggers, there are various simple ways to manage symptoms including using a preservati...ve-free saline spray or irrigation solution. Nasal salines work by washing allergens like pollens, dust mites, mould spores and pet dander out of the nasal passages which help reduce the allergic response. Our Corporate Supporters, Flo Family Health, offer some useful information about the important role of the nose and how a saline spray could help combat those irritating nasal symptoms from hay fever. #breathebetter #breatheeasier #hayfever #allergicrhinitis

17.01.2022 It’s Harmony Week! In a time when a global pandemic still wreaks havoc across the globe, this week offers us an opportunity to reconnect and discover a deeper appreciation for our peers, even if from afar. A popular way to celebrate our diversity is through sharing our culture and foods. Our General Manager - Health Services, Jenny, has shared this very special recipe, handed down through her family over many years. Her Aunty Arlene gave her the secrets to making this mild Bu...rmese curry over 20 years ago and Jenny still regularly refers to her original notes. These fond memories are weighted by the conflict unravelling in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and our thoughts are with those affected there and here in Australia. We hope this recipe can bring some brightness to your day as we remember some of the great people and traditions that make our lives better. 14.01.2022 Do you care for a child with asthma? Do you have issues around medication use during a flare-up? Local Western Australian developer, Nyan Walker has created a device that has the potential to make an enormous difference to asthma management and asthma first aid. As the father of two children with asthma, and one of those with special needs, Nyan is familiar with the distress of visiting the hospital emergency department. Something that has always stuck in my mind was while w...e were being shown how to use the asthma spacer and face mask on my son. He was screaming and the nurse reassured us that this was ok because if he is screaming, he is breathing, and if he is breathing, he is getting the required medication. While I understood what she meant, the sight of him being so fearful of his spacer made me determined to find a way to help him, and other children just like him, to be more at ease, explained Nyan. Nyan has since developed the Breathe2Go; a device that attaches to the child’s spacer and connects it to a mobile app which can help guide them through the steps to taking their reliever medication. A finalist in the 29th Lateral INCITE Awards for Social Impact, Nyan and the Breathe2Go team are seeking children to participate in a trial of the device. Visit their website for more information: https://buff.ly/36zTiJh #prototype #trial #breathebetter #asthma #childasthma

14.01.2022 With Spring upon us, the likelihood of smoke from planned burns and bushfires will be increase. The WA Department of Health is running a smoke tracking study that aims to better understand how smoke moves and affects people's health in the Perth and South West regions. AirTracker is a free smartphone app (accessed through your preferred internet browser) that is really simple to use. As you use the app, you are asked to record when you see and/or smell smoke, and if you are e...xperiencing any health symptoms. The information you share will help the Department of Health to better understand how frequent and widespread the problem of smoke from landscape fires may be. To be involved: Firstly check that your location services are enabled in your phone settings. Then go to https://buff.ly/3dznIPi (This will open the app in your web browser) The ‘How to use’ button will walk you through the steps of reporting smoke, and this is also explained below About AirTracker’ will provide details about the app and give you contact numbers if you are experiencing problems with the app or want to ask questions about the project. TIP: add a Shortcut to the AirTracker to your phone’s home screen so you can access it quickly, any time you observe smoke. HealthyWA

12.01.2022 Do you get hay fever? Have you ever spoken to your doctor about what youre experiencing? If you answered no to that last question, we want to ask why? You wouldnt be alone in not seeing your doctor to talk about your hay fever (in fact only 50% of people with hay fever consult with their doctor about it) but if you are selecting your own medications over the Pharmacy counter, we urge you to ask yourself why you have chosen that particular medication and if you are sure it... is the best option for you. Uncontrolled hay fever (allergic rhinitis) can make it hard to manage your asthma. Dont be one of the 85% of people who arent making the optimal choice by self-selecting their medications. People with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should seek a formal diagnosis and be reviewed by their doctor at least once a year. #nationalasthmaweek #naw2020 #hayfever #breathebetter RACGP Australian Journal of Pharmacy - AJP

11.01.2022 GSK Australia is pleased to announce that a dose counter has been added to Ventolin (salbutamol sulfate) metered-dose inhalers for Australian patients living with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The updated inhalers are reimbursed via the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and have been available in pharmacies from 1 August 2020 with a transition period. The inhaler with a dose counter will be introduced gradually over a period of four to six months... while the existing stock of Ventolin (without dose counter) continues to be sold in pharmacies. Reliever medications such as Ventolin play an important role in providing relief of asthma symptoms and in Asthma First Aid. Many people with asthma will often have multiple relievers on hand, making it harder to track exactly how many doses remain in each device. The introduction of a dose counter on the Ventolin inhaler will help people to be more aware of how much medication remains in the canister however, it is important to note that the medication itself has not changed.
