23.01.2022 This is such a good resource, especially if your child does not have a maths textbook at home. The free online ebooks are up to date for the new syllabus, semi interactive, has a short theory lesson with examples followed by exercises with fully worked solutions. I love using them with students as they can work out the problem and then click the button to reveal the solution and check how they did. It builds confidence and breaks the work down into manageable bits. https://mathspace.co/westpac/essentials/

15.01.2022 Random: I now know 4 ways to factorise nonmonic quadratic trinomials. We are never too old to learn a new trick.

12.01.2022 I just want to say to all the students I have been privileged to work with that are doing their HSC this year, all the best for your exams. You are amazing!

11.01.2022 Can younger students learn from computers? A few years ago a year 4 student proudly showed me that she had completed some English unit on verbs on a computer game. I asked her what a verb was, she had no idea, she didn't even recognise the word that was used on every screen. She used some clever strategies to avoid reading and retaining the information that was presented. Today a year 7 student showed me her work on a very clever online learning system for mathematics. It ai...ms to gauge where students are at and then present them with options that they could master next. I admit, the first time I looked at the system I was thoroughly impressed and thought this might just be the answer to students working at their own pace. Alas, it was again clear that students are very resourceful at avoiding the intent of the computer program. This student had somehow convinced the AI (artificial intelligence) that she had mastered some year 10 topics (she is definitely at a year 7 level). I was interested to see what she learnt or thought she had learnt. She said she liked the topic, she thinks it is algebra because there were letters and aren't those fractions in the picture? She was right there were fractions, she was in probability tree diagrams and the letters were the formal notation for probabilities. So she got her highest score in a topic she knew nothing about because she is good at pattern recognition and lucky at guessing. Hmmm, AI is not clever enough to deal with our students yet. It dawned on me that all the school reports I had seen that spoke of more than a year's progress in a year on this system may be worth less than the paper they are printed on. They say that students spent a lot of time on computers. Some learnt, but many probably did not learn that much and they don't know that they didn't. See more

09.01.2022 I am a happy tutor! Of my 6 regular HSC students, the two advanced students got first and second in their class, one Standard Maths student got first in the class too with a good rank in the school, and the others have improved their ranks. So proud of them all for all the hard work they have put in. The end is in sight, guys.

09.01.2022 I feel I am ready to take on more online tutoring. I want to help especially HSC students with their preparation. I know it is not easy to wrap your head around new concepts while basically doing distance education. If you need help with Mathematics, please either call Serendipity learning to book term 2 with me or send me a pm if you would like to book a few single sessions.

07.01.2022 I'm fully booked for this term. Only exception is space for senior students who have time before 3pm. Contact Serendipity learning, lovely and excellent tutors and amazing environment.

02.01.2022 I'm on a steep learning curve - tutoring will go online soon.
