24.01.2022 "Those who see the cosmic perspective as a depressing outlook, they really need to reassess how they think about the world. Because when I look up in the universe, I know I'm small but I'm also big. I'm big because I'm connected to the universe, and the universe is connected to me" Neil deGrasse Tyson. Timelapse at Lake Ninan north of Perth near Wongan Hills (Astrotourism town). A faint glow of zodiacal light behind the tree. You can see the yellow glow of Perth in the ...left of the scene. On the day that I setup for this (and some other images/timelapse) I set off early just in case the location wasn't going to be good for what I wanted and I needed to relocate. Arriving around noon the flies were a little too friendly so I used to drone to scout a bit before setting off on foot for a closer examination. It's that close to Perth that I ended up driving back to Perth to pick a couple of people up and driving back to location before setting up :P. Lake Ninan is an interesting location. The water level and lake bed were right to walk into the lake and stand in it being only about 15-20cm deep. Sometimes the water level is higher (to cover the base of this tree) and sometimes it will go completely dry. 23.01.2022 Out and about at work at a new location. While I plan with scouting (and GPS flag locations), writing up my shoot list for the location, checking gear, weather forecasts and set alarms for things like 2am in the morning to change setups, there will often be environmental factors outside of our control that affect things. So having contingency plans or being flexible to change is often important. It is also noted that sometimes you can't do anything about it either.

21.01.2022 Happy Christmas from everyone here at Astrophotobear (hang on a minute that's just me )

21.01.2022 On the outskirts of Perth is Perth Observatory in Bickley. Even though this is Bortle 4 location for light pollution (2015 map) it provides for some brilliant night sky viewing. They provide regular night sky tours full of information on the night sky. As an astrophotographer - I know that as the night sky progresses through the year, other celestial objects become visible so it can be worthwhile to visit at different times during the year. I had the privilege to be there photographing for an upcoming documentary into the night sky. Canon 6d with Tamron 24-70 timelapsing on a Skywatcher Star Adventurer.

18.01.2022 Vlaminghead lighthouse in Exmouth. We have such fantastic night skies.

18.01.2022 It's world mental health day today. Here is a bit of a throwback to the last 2 years of running astrophotography workshops fundraising for mental health. I didn't run one this year due to Covid19. From the beyondblue website - "Connections matter. Strong ties with family, friends and the community provide us with happiness, security, support and a sense of purpose. Being connected to others is important for our mental and physical wellbeing and can be a protective factor agai...nst anxiety and depression". Running the workshops has helped myself and fundraised for a worthy cause. The stars I feel are great for mental health - not only humbling by realising the enormity of the universe, but also helps me with my connection to things. I remember having a chat recently with someone about why I photograph various subjects - photographing the stars help me with my connection to the universe and photographing people - my connection with people. It's not easy connecting with either at times, but I think it's important to make the effort both from ourselves and also for others. See more

17.01.2022 if you're in Perth and want to see the Jupiter Saturn Conjunction - there are many places that you can view it - thanks Perth Observatory

15.01.2022 We live in a changing world, but we need to be reminded that the important things have not changed, and the important things will not change if we keep our priorities in proper order - S Truett Cathy

14.01.2022 I've updated my planning calendar for 2021 (based on Perth, Western Australia) - links to the forms on the blogpost https://astrophotobear.com//astrophotography-planning-cal/

13.01.2022 Waypoint - I had the recent opportunity to go and visit Bilya Rock in Morawa in Western Australia. It's located around 370km north of Perth. Bilya Rock itself is really dark - Bortle 1 with it being pretty distant from light pollution sources for both a rising and setting Milky Way core. A large cairn is standing on Bilya rock - it's reputed to have been placed there by John Forrest in the 1870s. It's also notable to say that he would have been led by the talents of Tommy... Windich who was the outstanding Aboriginal bushman who accompanied him on his expeditions. I called the image Waypoint due to John Forrest being reputed as one of the great explorers in Western Australia's history. "Bilya" - I understand means - from the river creek or big floods, home. Certainly going to be heading back to this location next year - when I was scouting found other great locations to image. See more

11.01.2022 Great time at Burns Beach for the conjunction with Jupiter and Saturn. Burns Beach was covered by Binocentral and AGWA, Perth Observatory and Fremantle Sidewalk Astronomy at North Coogee and Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory at Scarborough Beach. Great seeing a lot of people interested - and hoping that curiosity continues. You don't need a telescope to view the event, but if you want to see the detail (like the rings of Saturn), then you do.

10.01.2022 challenging my comfort zone

10.01.2022 The Stromatolites in Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve in Shark Bay Western Australia. Cynanobacteria are one of the first living creatures on Earth and Stromatolites are formed of these organisms. They bond together and gradually create these ancient structures. You're not allowed to swim in this area. A 200m boardwalk reaches out into the area for viewing access. I lowered a DJI Osmo action on a monopod with a dome to have a look at the underwater. For astrophotograp...hy purposes - the tide can get lower to reveal the tops of the Stromatolites, however they are very dark surfaces so would look best with crescent moon light or other external lighting. #djiosmoaction #underwaterphotography #hamelinpool #hamelinpool #sharkbay #australiascoralcoast #perthphotographer #wanderoutyonder #abcmyphoto #westernaustralia #thisisWA #stromatolites

08.01.2022 very honoured to have todays (2020 Oct 11) APOD

08.01.2022 Travelling to the north west of Western Australia on assignment, my first stop was the dish at Carnarvon. This was more than a 9 hour drive from my home in Perth (around 900km) . The OTC Satellite Earth Station Carnarvon was established in Australia to meet the needs for more reliable higher quality communications for the Apollo space program. The Carnarvon Tracking station was commissioned in 1964 and operated for 11 years and supported the Gemini, Apollo and Skylab prog...rams. The location is the home to the Carnarvon Space and Techology museum - the humble exterior reminds me very much of the TARDIS as it keeps going and going with much space history and memorabilia located within. You could easily get lost for hours within it's depths. I very much enjoyed my short stay in Carnarvon and will certainly be back - I want to get some more footage there for my tasks but also have some ideas about what additional equipment to deploy. This first visit to the fantastic location deployed 3 cameras. What should I call the photo? 06.01.2022 A short timelapse of day to night at the dish in Carnarvon with a hint of Milky Way core. The Carnarvon Tracking station was commissioned in 1964 and operated for 11 years and supported the Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs. The location is the home to the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum. I've already been planning my 2021 for a number of trips out and the Carnarvon Dish and area are definitely on my list to return to. #wanderoutyonder #canonaustralia #timelapse #milkyway #astrophotography

02.01.2022 Top 5 exercises for - Landscape photographers. This has no foundation in physiotherapy or other real health sciences. Just popped into my head since I ache all over from various recent photographing activities. I'll add a few other top exercises for various sorts of photography. Keen to hear peoples opinions. 1 - walking (or hiking) - I do a lot of hiking as part of getting to location for great landscape photos. I'll confess I cheat sometimes and use a drone to scout. ...Part of the enjoyment is the discovery of things along the way. I'm a bit busy a lot of the time, so keeping the body moving with walking will have to do in the meantime. 2 +3 - squats and lunges - goes along with the walking/hiking. Squats and lunges are great for going up hills and mountains. Also think bend down pickup gear stand up to put on tripod :P 4 - planking - to strengthen the core muscles. I think it's recommended to strengthen the core, so I thought I'd put it in there anyway. 5 - weights - this is a rather generic sort. I think there would be some more benefits to something like deadlifts (like lifting gear) or kettle bells (don't swing your camera gear like that please) or chin/pullups (if you need to do some climbing as part of getting out there.
