17.01.2022 Last week saw the first of the road races in 2021 held by the Cairns Cycling Club. With most of the team in the early stages of their training after a big break in 2020 only Kaito represented. Our young gun took on a reasonable sized field on a flat lap circuit amongst the cane fields of Gordonvale. ... Unfortunately the field seemed content with a bunch finish and any attempt by Kaito or any other rider to make a break was quickly reeled in. Kaito positioned himself well at the finish and despite not being a sprinter was still good enough to take an impressive 2nd place. This weekend sees him heading to the Mareeba course where hopefully the addition of a couple of lumps may be better suited. Also on the dirt our southern boy Dan tests the legs in the infamous ‘Willo’ memorial race. Results on both our boys to follow.. 14.01.2022 Sunday saw the Cairns Cycling Club Road Race number 2 with the testy little Chewko Rd course. Kaito again went it alone with Bren still on the recovery trail post shoulder reco and Bart and Jerry only recently having recommenced training. Kaito keen to make a breakaway work in the small field had a couple of cracks at various points but with no real support on each occasion was easily reeled in. ... With 25k to go, two riders got off the front and unfortunately Kaito missed the jump. With the break getting a solid gap the rest of the group seemed content with racing for 3rd. Kaito made a couple of desperate attempts to bridge the gap to the break but just didn’t have the legs to go it alone . The two boys off the front were just too strong on the day and the chase group didn’t even look like making the catch leaving Kaito to sprint it out for the last podium step. His earlier attempts to reach the break cost him in his sprint but nether the less still managed a gutsy 4th overall.
