25.01.2022 The need to repair and maintain vital infrastructure never stops, and neither do members of the ASU. Like members of our union right across Victoria and Tasmania, Ben and Jake at Ballarat City Council have been out doing vital repairs while keeping safe. Ben works on keeping footpaths and drains up to scratch and Jake, who usually works in road maintenance, was giving him a hand. ... Thank you them and to everyone else who is out keeping our footpaths, roads and drains safe and operational.

25.01.2022 In addition to structural inequalities that impact working women, women have borne the brunt of Covid-19 job losses. The Morrisson Government has failed to address these huge issues facing working women and our whole economy. Something needs to change to make sure the voices of women are heard by the Morrisson Government. https://www.theage.com.au//the-voice-of-women-is-missing-c

24.01.2022 Only those who live in Horsham Rural City have the chance to vote for Penny Flynn in the upcoming council elections. And they are lucky, because shell make a great councillor.

24.01.2022 Rosie is an ASU crisis champion whos been going the extra mile to help her community during Covid-19 pandemic. Like ASU members in industries right across Victoria and Tasmania, Rosie has been there when the need was greatest. She supported residents in the highrise during the recent lockdown and continues to support vulnerable community members impacted by family violence.... Good on you Rosie, the ASU and the broader community thank you.

23.01.2022 Read all about it! The Morrison Government must announce fair funding for equal pay in the community sector to save 12,000 jobs. We've made it super easy for you to email government MPs and let them know saving Equal Pay is essential https://australianservicesunion.good.do/saveequalpay/email/ ... https://www.theage.com.au//smell-of-an-oily-rag-social-ser

21.01.2022 Health & Safety Reps make a real difference to safer workplaces. They are elected by their workmates and represent them on health and safety issues. Simon Hume is Health and Safety Rep and a Library Officer in the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre. Simon's a champion who works to minimise the risk of a health and safety crisis at his workplace. As a Health and Safety Rep his focus is on supporting individual workers, consulting with management, and the WHS Committee.... With worker safety in mind, Simon has a goal of improving the working relationships between Health and Safety Reps and management. Big thanks to Simon for making his workplace a safer place for workers.

21.01.2022 All ASU delegates have had to deal with changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic and they all deserve recognition. But one ASU delegate has stood out - Glenda Lanting who works at Hume City Council. Glenda is the winner of the Innovation Champion Award that was announced at our delegates conference. The award was presented to a delegate who adapted to changing workplace environments to promote and strengthen the union through the use of innovation or technology. ... Glenda led the front line in ensuring Council provided a COVID safe workplace within libraries and across Council. Congratulations Glenda!

21.01.2022 The ASU has great delegates who represent and support members of our union every day. At our recent Delegates Conference, we got to recognise some delegates who are real champions. Christian, a delegate at Geelong Regional Library Corporation, is one of them. Christian was awarded the Health and Safety Champion Award. This award went to a delegate who made sure ASU members were represented in consultation on their employer's response to Covid-19 or intervened when the respon...se was inadequate. Christian also strongly advocated for casuals who were layed off during the first lock-down. Congratulations Christian!

21.01.2022 There's a lot at stake for workers in the social and community sector if the Morrison Government doesn't fund Equal Pay in the budget. Check out this video of economist Jim Stanford discussing what it will mean for jobs and services in the sector: https://www.youtube.com/watch After watching the video, sign our petition and share it around with your workmates. You can find the petition here: https://saveequalpay.com/

20.01.2022 Through the pandemic, ASU members like Cushla have been on the frontline delivering essential services. Cushla is a childcare worker at Yarra City Council and has been working through the pandemic to make sure her workmates and the kids they care for are safe. She's also an ASU delegate who, before the Stage 4 lockdown, visited three kinders and five child care centres to support ASU members. And while she was there, she even signed up new members to our union.... Cushla is a Crisis Champion, and we thank her for everything that she has done.

20.01.2022 If you are a woman looking for a union leadership program, then the Anna Stewart Memorial Project is perfect for you. In Victoria, the Anna Stewart Memorial Project will run as a series of online workshops from 12 to 22 October. You can download the program here: https://www.asuvictas.com.au//2020/09/ASMP-Program-Oct-202 If you want to take part, or just want more information, contact ASU Women's Organiser Punita Boardman at [email protected]... We've already had lots of interest in the Anna Stewart Memorial Project from ASU women in Tasmania, but if you are looking for more information or want to get involved in the Unions Tasmania Women's Committee contact ASU Organiser Karen Tantari at [email protected]

17.01.2022 Congratulations to Kath Larkin for Lord Mayor and the Victorian Socialists team, including ASU delegate Daniel Dadich, for signing the ASU's Local Council Candidate Pledge. We're thankful for their support for workers and proud an activist delegate like Daniel is a candidate for deputy lord mayor.

17.01.2022 On Wednesday ASU members at City of Hobarts Turf Crew met with Organiser Karen Tantari at North Hobart Football Oval to discuss their ongoing enterprise agreement negotiations. With ASU members right across council, they have endorsed making an application for protected action to secure better job security and to stop contracting out of positions at the City.

16.01.2022 The Covid-19 pandemic isnt stopping ASU members talking about their pay and conditions at work. With masks, shields and social distancing to stay safe, the depot crew at Manningham City Council got together to talk about their next enterprise agreement. This is what it looks like to use our collective strength to get better outcomes for members.

16.01.2022 There's usually a bit of tidying up to do in the backyard after a storm. But after the winds last week, the roads crew at Wellington Shire had a bit more cleaning up to do than most of us ever face. This essential work keeps the roads open. ... But more importantly, Colin and his crew who work out of the Maffra Depot make sure branches don't fall on cars. This work saves lives.

15.01.2022 ASU members win at Mount Alexander Shire Local Government in-home aged care workers provide an essential service. They are often the difference between older people staying in their communities or moving into residential aged care. They have been under extra pressure during the pandemic because their elderly clients are vulnerable to Covid-19. But at Mount Alexander Shire, until ASU delegates got involved, there was no additional time even to change face masks between clients.... These champions kept their clients safe but it was all in their own time. ASU delegates Sam Jones, Lucinda Banks & Fiona McInnes took up the issue & have won a paid time of 5 minutes for each mask change. And they even got the time in-home aged care workers had spent keeping their clients safe on their own time reimbursed by the council.

15.01.2022 Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day when the community reflects on transgender people who have been lost to transphobic violence. According to the Victorian Trades Hall Council’s report End Divide Through Pride, 77% of transgender and gender diverse people have experienced bullying and harassment at work, 44% have experienced misgendering and deadnaming at work. The ASU is working with delegates and members to win better conditions for people who transition at work through our model gender transition clause. It’s not enough to remember the victims of transphobia, together we have to fight for a world where there won’t be any more victims. If this is a subject you’re passionate about, get in touch and step up as an ASU delegate today.

14.01.2022 The ASU has been bargaining with the City of Hobart for a new enterprise agreement for at least 18 months. The General Manager has refused to offer a wage increase for the 2020-21 financial year, freezing wages across the City. Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds, during an interview on ABC Hobart yesterday, falsely claimed employees had received a wage increase "for this year". The truth is, the increase received by employees in January was a wage increase for LAST YEAR, paid over six... months late, with no back pay. Wage freezes hurt workers and the communities in which they live. It’s no wonder the culture is so bad at City of Hobart when the leadership can be so loose with the facts.

13.01.2022 We know communities need their libraries during lockdown, and now the Victorian Government knows it too. From Monday, libraries can operate contactless collection of books and home delivery services. This is a lifeline for people struggling with isolation. With workers allowed to return to the library from Monday, there is no excuse for employers to be standing down our library heroes. ... Were watching all those Councils that did the wrong thing very closely to make sure all casual and permanent library workers are reinstated next week. City Of Port Phillip Stonnington City Council Frankston City Council Yarra City Council

13.01.2022 Get in touch if you are a casual at Greater Shepparton City Council. The ASU has had real success getting the jobs of 30 casual workers at Greater Shepp converted to a permanent role. But we dont want to stop there, every worker deserves a secure job. ... We estimate there are still more than 100 casual workers who are likely to be eligible for a permanent role. So if you are a casual worker at Greater Shepparton City Council who wants more secure employment, or you know one, get in touch at [email protected]

12.01.2022 Candidates and sitting councillors from across Victoria are signing our Local Council Candidate Pledge. It's important to have candidates that are committed to workers and communities. Thank you to the Deputy Mayor of Ballarat Belinda Coates for signing the pledge and for her commitment to working people.

12.01.2022 Lucy is a crisis champion, helping to change the lives of women and children who have experienced family violence. Not only does Lucy’s work make a difference every day to the lives of those she supports, Lucy is also a long term ASU delegate. Her work as a delegate has been tireless - organising her workplace as well as recruiting and up-skilling other delegates. Massive thank you to Lucy for everything she does.

10.01.2022 ASU VicTas Branch Secretary Lisa Darmanin discussing Equal Pay and the campaign by members that won Equal Pay in the social and community services sector. If you aren't yet a member of our union, it's easy to join online at www.asu.asn.au/asujoin

10.01.2022 Shame on City of Port Phillip for reducing the livelihoods of our precious library staff! Get a message to your councillors.

09.01.2022 Good on Wayne Sproull, who is a candidate for Central Goldfields Council, for signing our pledge. Candidates from across a Victoria, just like Wayne, are committing to communities and workers.

09.01.2022 We've got ASU masks available for members of our union. Because of their work, we will still be prioritising masks for front-facing members. The masks won't arrive overnight, they will take some time to get out because we aren't operating from the office as usual.... If you want a mask, let us know here: https://www.asuvictas.com.au/let-us-know-if-you-need-a-fac/

09.01.2022 The Covid-19 pandemic has affected us all. But women have borne the brunt of higher unemployment. This impact has been greater in Victoria, and the need for ongoing social supports is greater too. The ASU is always working for members, and we’ve put a plan to the Victorian Government about how to make sure the economic recovery does not leave women behind. This plan also addresses the need for communities to be supported. You can download our submission here: https://www.asuvictas.com.au//ASU-VIC-TAS-Jobs-for-Women-P

09.01.2022 12,000 reasons to come along to ASU National Save Equal Pay briefing at 12:30 today! @scottmorrison4cook needs to commit to funding equal pay now. The Community Sector needs an ongoing commitment, not undermining by the Federal Government. Rego here for the link to meeting: bit.ly/asusep8 #saveequalpay #savejobssaveservices

09.01.2022 Signing the ASU's Local Council Candidate Pledge shows a candidate is willing to support workers and communities. Congratulations to Brendan Cameron for Darebin Central Ward for signing the pledge.

08.01.2022 Doc has been a union member for his whole working life and is an ASU a delegate at Gippsland Water. He's also a Crisis Champion. If you call the water authority then Doc & his crew head straight out to your place and make it safe. Some days he'll dig a hole, jump in, fix the pipe and then water comes on again. Other days, he inspects assets and prevents breakages or other problems. ... He works on-call and can sort out problems 24/7. Storms, floods, accidents you name it he has fixed them all. Doc's a dedicated union man, even when on smoko he'll sing out and ask a workmate to join the union. According to Doc, youd be mad to go into a meeting by yourself. I tell all the crew just sing out and we will be by your side.

08.01.2022 Congratulations to Jesse Mansfield who is running as a candidate in Glen Eira City Council's Camden Ward for signing our pledge. Our pledge is about making a commitment to communities and to workers.

08.01.2022 Did you know that every ASU member has an opportunity to have a say in their union? Our ASU member survey 2020 is now open. This is an important opportunity to share your views and have a say in your union. Fill in the survey now: http://bit.ly/asusurvey20

08.01.2022 It's great to see ASU members and unionists running for local council. We need councillors that are committed to workers and communities. Congratulations to Melissa Cadwell For Brownbill Ward for signing our Local Council Candidate Pledge. Whether you live in Greater Geelong or any other local government area in Victoria, make sure you support a candidate who has signed our pledge.

07.01.2022 It's NAIDOC Week and this year's theme, "Always Was, Always Will Be" recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65...,000 years. Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. This week we want to celebrate ASU First Nations members like Uncle Charlie from Port Augusta, and the enormous contributions they make to their workplaces, to their communities and to their union. We are honoured to be able to stand by their side.

06.01.2022 ASU Submission to Inquiry into Homelessness in Victoria. When you boil it down, our submission to this parliamentary inquiry is pretty simple - a roof isn't enough. Placing vulnerable Victorians into housing without adequate social support increases the likelihood of tenancies being unsustainable or breaking down, with an increased risk of recurring homelessness.... People who have experienced homelessness need services delivered by qualified and securely employed housing and homelessness workers. You can read our full submission to the inquiry here:https://www.asuvictas.com.au//ASU-VIC-TAS-Homelessness-Inq

06.01.2022 NAIDOC Week Always Was, Always Will Be. This is a time to recognise that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this land for over 65,000 years. 06.01.2022 Listen to ASU Delegate Julie Butcher talking about insecure work. We are fighting increasing casualisation. Join us in the fight, speak to your ASU Delegate or join the ASU today https://www.asu.asn.au/asujoin

05.01.2022 Nominations only opened yesterday for council elections in Victoria. And already candidates in almost every metropolitan council have signed the ASUs Local Council Candidate Pledge. If you know a candidate running for council, ask them to sign the pledge. You can download it here: https://www.asuvictas.com.au//Local-Council-Candidate-Pled

05.01.2022 Another candidate in Moorabool Shire has signed our Local Council Candidate Pledge. Congratulations Tonia Dudzik for re-election to East Moorabool Ward for committing to workers and communities in Moorabool.

05.01.2022 Some things in life are complex, but this one's really simple. Women should not retire in poverty. So the ASU is campaigning for women to be able to save enough for a decent retirement.

05.01.2022 In addition to standing up for your rights and for fair pay, the ASU can help you develop your career. Check out the courses we have coming up this month on the ASU Career Launchpad.

02.01.2022 Happy Early Childhood Educators Day Early Childhood Educators Day celebrates the work of Australia's educators for the contribution they make to the wellbeing and healthy development of the young children in their care. Assistant Branch Secretary Melissa Wainwright brings 15 years experience as an early childhood educator to her work at the ASU.... "We value and understand the work of early childhood educators, and we're proud so many of these dedicated professionals are part of our union." Early childhood educators at councils deliver an essential service, and the contribution they make to the development of young children is huge. Part of the ASUs role is making sure employers value early childhood educators as much as the community does.

01.01.2022 We're very happy the endorsed Labor candidate for Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Philip Reed, has signed the ASU's Local Council Candidate Pledge. This sends a strong message to the whole sector of the importance of workers and communities. Thanks for showing leadership Philip Reed.

01.01.2022 While Victoria has been in lockdown, ASU members at VicRoads have been going above and beyond to keep this vital service going. Regular drive tests have stopped, but a limited number of drive tests have continued for applicants who urgently need a license on compassionate grounds. ASU delegates have made sure License Testing Officers have appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, and that there are rigorous procedures to keep everyone safe. ... A huge thank you to all the License Testing Officers at VicRoads. In this crisis, you are real champions.

01.01.2022 Its always a good day to fight the gender pay gap Shout out to all ASU members who have campaigned to eliminate the gender pay gap and for equal pay. But working women are still undervalued across Australia there is a 14% gender pay gap. Today marks the number of additional days women would have needed to work (from the end of the last financial year) just to make up the gender pay gap difference.... So we are coming together today to demand the pandemic support that working women need. Here are 3 things you can do: 1. Sign the petition telling Morrison and the National Cabinet to take action at www.megaphone.org.au/petitions/working-women 2. Post a selfie using the hashtags #EqualPayDay2020 #WorkingWomenNeed and #SafeRespectedEqual 3. Join the Equal Pay COVID-19 Panel at 1pm today. RSVP at https://www.unionwomen.org.au/equal_pay_day_covid19_panel_d

01.01.2022 Last week Scott Morrison revealed his intention to give corporations the power to undermine the most basic protections workers have. Unsurprisingly, this happened in a speech he gave to a business lobby group. We need to stand up against these anti-worker proposals and we need to do it now. Add your name to our petition calling on Scott Morrison to stand for the workers ... https://fortheworkers.australianunions.org.au/petition See more

01.01.2022 Libby Jamieson is a Crisis Champion. She's a long term member of the ASU who has campaigned for workers rights and vulnerable community members most of her working life. Libby heads-up a counselling team at Switchboard who have been working extra hard to support members of the LGBTIQ+ community through the pandemic. Well respected across the SACS industry, Libby was voted onto the ASU Branch Executive in 2018. Libby represents the SACS industry and works tirelessly to suppor...t and grow this crucial part of the ASU. Big thanks to Libby for all the work she does for working people, the LGBTIQ+ community, and for our union.
