24.01.2022 After exhaustive testing and a debugging run of over two weeks, Barr Systems has tracked down and eliminated a memory leak in the BHCS Spoolcore module. The memory leak is thought to be the cause of occasional instability at very high-volume sites, processing some thousands of spool files daily. If you run BHCS and have high volumes of print, you should definitely read this, then upgrade to BHCS 7.1.49.9 or higher. Read more https://atac.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/news19q3.pdf

21.01.2022 Barr and Output Manager Integration. Many Output Manager users also have Barr Host Communications Suite (BHCS) machines. Typically BHCS is used to transport print data from the client site, then Output Manager is used to enhance the print. In some cases BHCS then picks up the enhanced print and transports it to one or more specialised printers, or off to branch offices. Barr transport options are the fastest available, and cater for almost any client infrastructure. Read more : https://atac.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/news20q1.pdf

19.01.2022 De-commission your expensive IPDS printers, without any changes at the HOST. Barr Systems' IPDS Converter can emulate multiple IPDS printers and converts IPDS print to industry standard PDF. Printing from the HOST continues unchanged, but you now have the flexibility to send the PDF output to local or LAN printers of any type. See more here: atac.com.au/ipds-converter/

19.01.2022 The Barr IPDS Converter enables any printer to print IPDS from AFP enabled host systems such as mainframes (zSeries), AS400s (iSeries), and more. It is software which can be installed in a matter of minutes on a Microsoft Windows PC, where it runs as a Windows Service. Like hardware solutions such as embedded cards and conversion boxes, this product leverages your investment in IBMs AFP/IPDS application technology by offering a much wider range of printing choices. Print to PDF or to inexpensive desktop or LAN printers. Replace your expensive IPDS printers with Barr's IPDS Converter, with NO CHANGES to the HOST. More info: atac.com.au/ipds-converter/

17.01.2022 The Output Manager Viewer is also used to create and update VDE scripts, providing you have a License to do so. Start the Viewer and click Enrichment Editor, the right-most button on the button bar. Choose New or Existing to create or update VDE. Edit View (the default) allows for multiple VDE files to be open at once, as a series of Tabs across the screen, just under the button bar. You can just click Enrichment Editor to open other VDE files, then switch between them v...ia the Tabs. Large projects often comprise one main VDE script and one or more Included VDE scripts. This allows you to break processing into manageable chunks, and re-use generic modules which have already been debugged. You can view a jobs output by dragging and dropping a profile onto the Viewer client, which should be in Output mode. If the Viewer already has a VDE script open, the script edit window shrinks to the left-side of the Viewer and the jobs output appears in the right-hand panel. The Output Enrichment Editor provides a GUI-based IDE with integrated Debugger (discussed in the next article). Contact Atac to arrange VDE training, a pre-requisite to becoming a VDE Developer. 15.01.2022 Output Manager Support for PDF/UA. Governments are increasingly requiring their agencies and contractors to deliver accessible products and services. From websites to forms, regulations, product manuals and reports, documents in the US Federal Government must comply with Section 508 accessibility regulations, in effect since 2001. Similar laws are present in Canada, various EU member states, Australia and elsewhere. PDF/UA (PDF/Universal Accessibility) is the informal name ...for ISO 14289. PDF/UA utilises the PDF format to enable user accessibility by, for example, tagging the real content in logical reading order, tagging to represent the documents semantic structures (headings, lists, tables etc.) and including alternative text descriptions for meaningful graphics. 15.01.2022 Why do we need to determine a print files FORMAT? In order to perform an ad-hoc print file import into BHCS, you need to tell Print Utility what FORMAT the file is stored in. If you have several permanently polled watch directories for BHCS, you need to know which FORMAT is assigned to each watch dir, so you can drop your print file into the correct one. If youre in the print bureau business, youll be given sample data in a variety of FORMATS, to try and work w...ith. If you havent been told specifically how a file is formatted, youll have to work it out for yourself! BASICS When we refer to a files FORMAT here, were not talking about margins, tab setup etc. Were talking about the basic structure of the data file, as stored on disk. TOOLS Here are a few Windows tools I use, to examine and determine file formats: Hexedit Hex view of a file DEBUG Don't look surprised! UltraEdit Powerful, biased towards programmers. Notepad Free, small ASCII files only, search/replace. Beyond Compare Compare any two files and see diffs. Got an unrecognisable print file format? Atac can help you work out what it is. 14.01.2022 The Barr Host Communications Server (BHCS) receives files from multiple sources and sends to multiple outputs. Sources can include RJE, NJE, TCP/IP, Channel (Bus & Tag, Escon or FiCon), Disk and other Barr units. Outputs can include RJE, NJE, TCP/IP, LAN, Disk, Local printers and other Barr units. On the BHCS Spool screen, the Outputs are shown at the top and the Spool files are shown at the bottom. When an Output is Ready, any files with matching white-column content which are also Ready, are sent to that output device. See more here https://atac.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/news19q4.pdf

14.01.2022 Insertion of marketing materials into our utility and bank statement envelopes is fairly commonplace. It usually happens in the back print room where the mailing equipment resides, with special marks on the statement triggering the equipment to insert one or more pages into each mailpack. This requires the document to be pre-coded in some way to trigger the insertion(s). Additionally, the mailing equipment has to be setup and tested appropriately, insertion stock must be ordered, warehoused, conditioned etc. and more staff are involved in the entire process at several levels. There is a better way. Read more : https://atac.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/news20q2.pdf

12.01.2022 The Output Manager Viewer is also a VDE Script Editor (see prior article), and a full-blown Debugger as well. The Debugger can replay a job, stepping line by line through your VDE code, showing the code results in the output panel. The Input Debugger is used to debug a VDEINPUTSOURCE script, run by the Input client during Input processing i.e AFP-IN, PDF-IN, XRX-IN etc. The Output Debugger is used to debug a VDEOUTPUTSOURCE script, run by the Output client during Output Proc...essing i.e. AFP-OUT, PDF-OUT, XRX-OUT etc. When using the debugger, the Viewer screen maximises and divides itself into several panels. The right-hand panel shows your output; the left hand side shows a code panel at top and Debugger panel at bottom. All panels can be re-sized. The Debugger allows you to step line by line through your code, or execute until a condition is met, a line is reached, a value changes etc. You can see program flow and examine variables and their content. As each line is executed, you see immediate results in the output panel. Its an essential tool for any Developer and a bit of an eye-opener for trainees too. Atac provides structured Training in all aspects of VDE Programming, including the Debugger. More info: atac.com.au/output-manager/

06.01.2022 When you are programming in Output Enhancement, the Viewer becomes the IDE, comprising Editor and Debugger. Viewer functionality is still present; you can: 1. Run a job to the Viewer, then create or open a VDE script, which appears alongside. 2. Load a VDE script to the Editor, then run a job to the Viewer (in Output mode). Both these techniques are very useful, as you can see each Object in the Viewer and the code beside it in the Editor. You can link the Viewer and the Edit...or code by: 1. Double-clicking the Object name ([OBJECT_Address] etc.) in the Editor, then pressing F12. 2. Selecting the Object in the Viewer with the Mouse, which causes the Editor to move to that Object and highlight all occurrences.
