23.01.2022 As designers of mostly residential projects, we're always conscious that a home is not merely bricks and mortar but a place of refuge because its unique and personal to you. In these uncertain times, never has the need for a safe haven been more important. We hope everyone in our beloved Atelier Bond community is healthy, that you're in the company of exemplary 'social distancers' as well as finding comfort at home. Our thoughts on the challenges ahead...... We've been in touch with all our amazing clients this week to reassure them it's business as usual (maybe with a touch more sanitiser and teleconferencing). We've always been thankful for their support, but boy, are we counting our blessings right now. A big shout out to media such as @citymagadl and @salifepublications who are keeping people informed on how to support the SA business community. As small business operators ourselves, we ask that you continue to be a patron of your neighbourhood shops, your local merchants and service providers. If the GFC taught us any lesson it's that this shall too pass. In 2008, we were in Dubai and saw first-hand the startling effects of a financial meltdown. People abandoned their homes, their cars, their communities and jumped on flights elsewhere to avoid jail time because they couldn't pay their debts. While this wasn't our personal experience, the GFC was the reason we were transferred to San Francisco at a time when California was almost bankrupt. Let's just say, we learnt the importance of a safety net. When we reached home, the economic downturn just started to take its toll here in Australia. Over the time of the GFC, between Leisha and myself, we had been present in various workplaces where a total of 13 rounds of redundancies had taken place. But without the GFC, we wouldn't have moved home. We also wouldn't have started Atelier Bond. So, while not ones to be naively optimistic, you never know what opportunities may arise from this challenge. We just need to stick together - so long as it's today's announcement of 4 metres apart.
