25.01.2022 This is IMPORTANT the electorial commission is changing the electoral boundary so HERBERTON will fall under RAVENSHOE boundary Below is a letter from Kate Eden regarding log into the link to have your say..Hi everyone, You may have heard that the Electoral Commission Queensland is proposing a change to TRC’s divisional boundaries which will cut Herberton out of Division One and put it in Division Two (currently goes from Tepon back to Mt Garnet, but also takes in a small part... of Herberton including the cemetery). The community can make submissions to the electoral commission, but they close 30 September. I thought Council would be making a submission but I was informed yesterday that it won’t be, so we will be relying on individual submissions. Not that the commissioner will probably take any notice, (in my personal opinion, I think this is a way to force the community towards an undivided council by continually cutting up the region until it doesn’t make sense). The boundary review is because the populations have changed and D2 has too few voters whilst D1 now has too many (but I love them all!). Unfortunately, they appear to have used a computer program to generate equal populations without paying attention to practical links or communities of interest. Issues of concern: D2 is the most geographically dispersed division and is hard enough to service the outlying areas now, without making it even bigger. The current D1 provides a logical link between Atherton and Herberton based on the highway and tourism infrastructure such as Chinatown and the mountain bike park pushing tourists towards Herberton for outdoor recreation and heritage / cultural interests. Whilst Herberton has a good relationship with Ravenshoe, there is a stronger practical link with Atherton as the major service centre. The proposed D1 has no community of interest and cuts up the transport links (which isn’t a problem if everyone is working together, but if you had a hostile Council, Herberton is likely to get hung out to dry). I will be putting in an individual submission to the commissioner. I encourage you to do so as well (if you think it is important for Herberton to be linked to Atherton and to retain a strong focus from your divisional councillor). Please also inform your networks. https://www.ecq.qld.gov.au//di/tablelands-regional-council Viola, please send out this information through the HCIA network if you think it is appropriate. 01.01.2022 Pumped | A Water and Waste Art Trail Cairns Regional Council’s Water and Waste division has instigated a major public art program running over three years that ...will see hand-painted murals adorning the walls of pump stations and infrastructure buildings across the region. Artists are hard at work beautifying a series of pump stations that you may not otherwise have noticed. The first project was completed in late 2017. Koah-based Artist Violet Shaban has completely transformed the Lake Morris Road Water pump station with an artwork inspired by Native Wattle. Pump stations provide vital services in the provision of clean water and the treatment of waste water. They are now being seen as a blank canvas for local, national and international mural artists.
