25.01.2022 Giulia cleans and presses 40kg. While others in lockdown were living on KFC and doomscrolling, she was tracking her food and going on long walks, which worked well for her physical and mental health.

24.01.2022 Courtesy the generous Dan and Eliza, the gym steps into the modern era with a Bluetooth speaker to put out the Fully Sick Beatz. Of course, we put on the New Retro Wave channel, since the 1980s were the peak of Western civilisation.

23.01.2022 Arun pulls 70, a PR for him.

22.01.2022 Productive change is good. But don't try to get fancy, and don't inflict it on your families. https://www.smh.com.au//the-new-male-dieting-angst-is-caus

21.01.2022 And here we go again. The gym will be closed for the six weeks required by the state government. We will keep in touch, and look forward to seeing you on the other side. In the meantime, each day... 1. screens off by 2130 2. eat 3 cups of vegies 3. go for a 30-60' walk and you will feel better. https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au//coronavirus/statement-premier

21.01.2022 Strength in the foreground, mobility in the background. After a three-month break for most, the work has begun.

20.01.2022 Vivek came along at newbie hour, which is every Sunday 3-4pm. Pictured are the first reps of each exercise. Anyone can come once for free and we'll teach them to squat, press and pull and give them a sketch of what the next few months should look like.

18.01.2022 It's no shame to want to look good. Most of the things we consider good looks are also signs of good health. There's a reason there's no palliative care porn.

17.01.2022 Science offers many useful insights. https://www.instagram.com/p/CHaopC8j27f/

17.01.2022 In many areas, elective surgery is cancelled right now, which for some procedures is good, because it allows you time to consider alternatives. Before going under the knife for anything not immediately life-threatening, you should ask critical questions like - "what proportion of patients, exactly, are better 12 months after this, and what proportion worse?" and seek a second opinion from someone as or more qualified. It may be there is a nonsurgical alternative. "Take what ...happened with spinal fusion, an operation that welds together adjacent vertebrae to relieve back pain from worn-out discs. Unlike most operations, it actually was tested in four clinical trials. The conclusion: Surgery was no better than alternative nonsurgical treatments, like supervised exercise and therapy to help patients deal with their fear of back pain. In both groups, the pain usually diminished or went away." https://www.nytimes.com//the-right-to-know-that-an-operati

14.01.2022 I have trained people with spinal cord injuries, wrist fusions, knee reconstructions, shoulder reconstructions, hip replacement, recovering from breast or lymphatic cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, with various cardiac conditions, preparing people for defence or police force entry, and of course post-partum. And there were some competitive lifters in there, too. The human body can do many amazing things, about the least interesting of which is deciding to look a certain way, whatever may be fashionable this week. Enjoy what your body is capable of, and make the most of it. https://www.abc.net.au//why-i-love-my-post-baby-b/12363744

14.01.2022 Snatch-grip deadlifts on the rough knurling ABC deadlift bar is a special kind of hardarsed.

12.01.2022 I can't really summarise this. Read it. https://www.otpbooks.com/internalized-smallness/

12.01.2022 Age doesn't mean as much as you think. If you have a 4hr marathon time, congratulations, you are now as fit as an 80 year old woman. For most of us, it's not the miles on the clock, it's the years spent rusting in the garage. Where might you be in ten years if you started training now? Compared here are people's world record performances in various age groups, expressed as a fraction of the open record. Endurance is measured by marathon times, speed by 100m sprint, and streng...th by powerlifting total (squat, bench and deadlift, for a person of BMI 25 who is average height for their gender). This compares only drug-tested results in competition. Some values are absent, for example apparently no 95yo women seem to have done marathons. The curves are not always smooth; as people get older, there are fewer competitors, and strength sports have overall less participation than endurance and speed sports.

11.01.2022 A question to a strength coach: "Would you consider too much walking to hinder any strength gains?" If going for a walk seriously interferes with your strength training, you need to stop strength training and go for more walks. Everyone needs to go for a 30-60' walk every day. Take the kids, too.

10.01.2022 A walkthrough. It's just a small space, but has everything we need for our style of training. Any questions?

09.01.2022 There are four levels of feeling comfortable with your body. In the worst stage, you are too embarrassed to leave the house. In the second stage, you leave the house but with your shirt hanging out. Third stage you tuck your shirt in.... Fourth stage you take your shirt off. If you were the sort of person at the next stage, what do you think their daily habits might be?

08.01.2022 Here's a thought. If someone presents to my gym with a heart condition, I'm supposed to refer them to a doctor for a medical clearance before training them. If I say, "It's his choice!" and train them anyway, and they die, their family can sue me for negligence. If someone presents to a naturopath with cancer, they are not required to refer them, and if the patient dies, the naturopath can't be sued. Likewise chiropractic, etc. "It's his choice!" Medical professionals are hel...d to legal standards. Fitness instructors are held to legal standards. Alternative medicine practitioners are not held to legal standards. It'd be interesting to see how long alternative medicine would survive if held to legal standards. Consider this when you seek the advice of an alternative medicine practitioner.

08.01.2022 A few random lifting scenes from this week. Everyone's still working back from lockdowns and holidays. In a month or so it'll be heavy, for the newer people for the first time, for the experienced lifters... they've been there before. It's just people of all ages, backgrounds, professions and kinds, showing up and doing the work to better themselves in some way

08.01.2022 My daily meditation is standing in this little patch of bush and breathing in and out slowly 144 times. How about you?

08.01.2022 In his 60th workout after many interruptions through a dramatic year, being in his fifth decade and dealing with a small business and three kids, Curtis has a maxout and squats 130, bench 75 and deadlifts 130.

07.01.2022 Up north, Kelli pulls 130kg at a deadlift-only meet.

07.01.2022 We had thought that people in the overweight category, if active had a lower overall risk than those in the normal bodyweight category who were sedentary. This study suggests not, showing that increasing physical activity is always good, but proportional bodyweight does matter. https://academic.oup.com//d/10.1093/eurjpc/zwaa151/6105192

05.01.2022 The reopening saw both sessions booked out. Some people were a bit traumatised at our new session structure with cardio.

05.01.2022 Merkava pulls an easy 85kg. Paramedic work doesn't always allow for consistent and hard training, but if it's consistent then it'll still do good things for you.

04.01.2022 Things which are bad for you health normally turn out to be bad when dealing with a deadly virus. That's not a surprise. As the article alludes to, focusing on weight loss is often counterproductive. It's better to focus on doing things which will be good for you whether you lose weight or not. 1. screens off by 2130 each night... 2. eat 3 cups of vegies a day 3. go for a 30-60' walk every day Obviously, there are other things you can do. What are you doing to help your health? Tell us below. https://www.theguardian.com//no-10-plans-weight-loss-drive

02.01.2022 When gyms are able to open once more, seek out one with good ventilation. According to this modelling, that's the single most important factor. https://english.elpais.com//a-room-a-bar-and-a-class-how-t

01.01.2022 This was good, and Alan's observations echo our own at ACE. Find something you enjoy doing and keep doing it. What's made you quit in the past?... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2Xgkfccmj8

01.01.2022 Curtis squats an easy 80kg for his work sets. It was easier than his 90kg farmers walks.
