25.01.2022 Athletics at the Sydney Olympics Friday 29 September 50km Walk Nathan Deakes 6th 3:47.26, Dion Russell 27th 4:02.50, Duane Cousins 34th 4:10.53 Geelong race walker Nathan Deakes competed an impressive double, when he placed sixth in the 50km walk, just six days after finishing eighth in the 20km walk. It may have only been September, but Sydney had put on challenging conditions for the endurance athletes with the temperature reaching 34.5 degrees, its second hottest Septe...mber day since records began in 1859. "The last 10k was like nothing I've ever experienced before. It was a lot of pain," said Deakes. Another Australian Dion Russell also struggled in the conditions. He stopped at about 35km because of leg cramps. He stumbled across the line in 27th place and collapsed in a dehydrated heap and was taken to the medical room in a wheelchair. The third Australian, Duane Cousins was 34th. Poland’s Robert Korzeniowski made history when he completed the walk double becoming the first walker to win both Olympic events. #MySydney2000 #thisisathletics

I doubted my strength over the distance and feared I'd tire over the last 50m, which is ironic as that was mostly my strongest part of the race! But I knew I wanted this win. 04.01.2022 Today is the last day of Mental Health Awareness month but there are always small steps you can take each day to support your own mental health. Take a few tips from Australian representatives Sarah Walsh, Rhiannon Clarke and our friends at headspace.

04.01.2022 Athletics at the Sydney Olympics Sunday 1 October Marathon - 8th Steve Moneghetti 2:14.50, 28th Rd de Highden 2:18.04, 66th Lee Troop 2:29.32 "Thank you Australia. Steve Moneghetti, over and out." They were the emotional words of one of the greats of Australian athletics, after her finished 10th in the marathon at the Sydney Olympics his last marathon in the green and gold. It closed a career that saw him compete on 29 occasions for Australia over 20 years including three... top-10 Olympic finishes and a medal at all four of his Commonwealth Games appearances. Moneghetti's success in his final race was due to his early decision to run his own race. After 15km, he had dropped off the main pack and was 43rd. I realised soon I had to run my own race, but once we started to go over Anzac Bridge I was right.'' As he arrived in the Olympic Stadium he soaked up the atmosphere, waiving to the 114,000 crowd that were there to watch the final medal awarded and send off the Olympics at the closing ceremony. ``That is it, my body these last few weeks is feeling it,'' he said. It is fair on my family to let someone else come into the sport, hopefully having learned from me as a role model.'' It was a tough race for teammate Lee Troop. I really expected to have a great performance but I didn't, said Troop. I guess I wasn't prepared for the hardships of what the marathon is all about. Troop would rebound well with a tremendous 17th at the 2003 world championships. The third Australian Rod de Highden was 28th. #MySydney2000 #thisisathletics

03.01.2022 Athletics at the Sydney Olympics Saturday 30 September 4x400m Relay 5th 3:23.81 Tamsyn Lewis, Nova Peris, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor and Cathy Freeman (heat Susan Andrews & Jana Pittman) In the heat on September 29, Australia smashed the national record clocking 3:24.05 with the team of Tamsyn Lewis, Susan Andrews, Jana Pittman and Nova Peris. For the final they added Melinda Gainsford-Taylor and Cathy Freeman, replacing Andrews and Pittman. In the final Australia were alwa...ys in the medal hunt. When Cathy Freeman took the baton for the anchor, Australia was in fifth well behind fourth place. Cathy ran a brilliant anchor leg, easily the fastest of the day, drawing Australia back into the mix, but ran out of track, remaining in fifth, just 0.36 seconds from a medal. Australia again broke the national record clocking 3:23.81. #MySydney2000 #thisisathletics
