In total 10 meet records were bettered on an outstanding day of competition. 03.01.2022 Sprinters flocked to the third Illawong High Performance meet on Saturday afternoon at Barton Ridge in the Sutherland Shire. Events on the program were 60m, 100m, 200m and high jump and an extraordinary 16 heats were required in the men’s 100m to accommodate the large numbers of athletes hungry for competition. Australia’s fastest man, Rohan Browning (SYU) made his season debut in the 100m clocking a very impressive 10.23 into a 1.1m/s wind. He was a surprise late entry in th...e 200m, where he ran his equal second fastest 200m time of 20.77 (0.2m/s). His notable one-day double is the best by an Aussie for a decade following Matt Davies 10.23/20.54 in 2010. Some other quality doubles in the last decade have been Alex Hartmann Qld 10.27/20.59 (23/3/19), Jarrod Geddes NSW 10.30/20.59 (22/2/14) and Tim Leathart NSW 10.24/20.71 (9/3/13). In the women’s 60m, teenager Monique Quirk (CBT) continues to progress up the Australian All-time rankings clocking a 0.07 seconds PB time of 7.35. She later comfortably won the 200m in 24.14. Second in the 60m in 7.51 was 16-year-old Shola Adenira (WES) who at the recent NSW All Schools ran 11.80 the fastest time at the championships for 40 years. In the 100m Maisie Stevens just missed her PB, clocking 11.81 (0.7) for the win. She returns to the University of California this week to continue her studies. In the men’s 60m, it was a win for the local Illawong athlete Zach Holdsworth in a windy (2.7m/s) 6.69, ahead of Anas Abu Ganaba (CBT) 6.72 and in his season debut, Josh Clarke (SYU) clocking 6.76. Later, Holdsworth was second in the 100m, with 10.56. One of the impressive runs of the day was Josh Azzopardi’s second in the 200m in a quick 21.31. In the high jump, local teenager Angus Clark (ILL) continued his tremendous consistency winning with a leap of 2.09m, before missing some good attempts at a PB of 2.12m. Over the last 12 months his clearances have been 2.10m, 2.00m, 2.09m, 2.10m and 2.09m. He defeated Matt Tilley (SYP) with 2.06m and 16-year-old Will Moir’s 2.00m. David Tarbotton
