25.01.2022 On Friday and Saturday I had the pleasure of fixing some laptop issues for Marissa Ely who runs the Maroubra Community page. My one regret? Not taking a video of the pure elation and endless giggles that erupted when I fixed one of her little niggles.... thinking of you Marissa... you're making me smile right now :)

23.01.2022 Not exactly where we expected to end up yesterday... called out to a construction site to look at a custom computer console and ended up in one of these things :)

23.01.2022 This is really important!!

23.01.2022 In these tough times, we're hoping that everyone is keeping safe at home with their loved ones while the world tries to heal. We'd also like to let everyone know that while our regular clients have enjoyed the ability to have their computer problems resolved remotely, we can provide the same capabilities to anyone that requires assistance with their computers. Unless you're having serious issues, there's a good chance we can help you too :) We wish you all the very best for these holidays.

21.01.2022 Just a heads up on a Microsoft Windows 10 Update for April that was released at the end of the month and is installing these days. The update *may* cause your computer to become unresponsive by booting up and then staying at a black screen with no windows background and no way of getting around it. If this is happening to you, don't worry - you're not the only one. Microsoft is looking in to it and will release a fix as soon as they figure it out. For our purposes though, if this is happening to you, please call to arrange a visit because the fix is a bit technical and isn't for everyone.

21.01.2022 Here's wishing all the mothers and mother figures out there a happy and sweet mother's day

21.01.2022 SCAM ALERT everyone

16.01.2022 Windows 10 - should you or shouldn't you? Well Windows 10 has now been available for a good few weeks and most people would have either upgraded to it and loved it, or upgraded to it an downgraded right back. Here's a couple of quick tips as to whether or not you should: 1. Check on your computer manufacturer's website to see if your computer is supported for windows 10 - if it is then go ahead and enjoy. 2. If you mostly use your computer for internet, email, and some docume...nts - go ahead and upgrade.Windows 10 generally runs faster than Windows 8 did and brings back the familiar interface from Windows 7 - you shouldn't have too many issues. 3. If your computer is less than 2 years old - generally you'd be safe upgrading, but make sure all your drivers (especially your video drivers) are up to date before proceeding 4. If you're using programs that are especially graphics reliant or intensive (games, photo and video editing, etc), be careful with the upgrade. Make sure that your programs are supported under Windows 10, make sure that your video card is also supprted. There's nothing like going through an upgrade only to find out your favourite program won't work 5. Remember - you have 30 days to reverse your upgrade - after 30 days the change becomes permanent and you're stuck with it - so if you're not sure or you haven't been able to iron out any problems, revert the upgrade because you can try it again 3 months down the line and see if the problems you've experienced now have solutions. If you'd like any advice, feel free to contact us... As an aside, one of our computers (fairly new) was upgraded and we found that the 1 program we really used on it kept crashing. As you can imagine a downgrade followed shortly after, but in a few onths we'll see whether or not the problems have been ironed out and try again.

16.01.2022 When was the last time you updated your anti-virus protection?

14.01.2022 Well, it's official, we've joined up to www.serviceseeking.com.au - let's hope it's a match made in heaven :)

13.01.2022 Just had to share an experience... I had the displeasure of having to deal with ALDI's mobile team yesterday. I wish I could give praises to their support team as I do for their mobile product which so far I've had no issues with. The problem: trying to activate global roaming on an account. Come on ALDI - it really should not have taken me 20-30 min to get this sorted out. The support staff kept agreeing with what I was saying, then putting the question I had just asked back to me to which my response was - that's what I'd like YOU to answer. It felt like the whole thing was scripted and the moment I went off script ALDI support hit the rewind button for 5 seconds for a truly groundhog day experience. I really hope I don't have to call them again... very frustrating.

13.01.2022 So 2 questions always pop up: 1. Should I upgrade my computer? 2. Should I swap my PC for a MAC (or MAC for PC)? Well my views on these is relatively simple. 1. Does your computer do everything you need it to do? Has your computer use changed since you bought this machine? If all you do is search the internet, create some documents, and do your internet banking, then there's no reason why your current computer won't do the job - it probably just needs some TLC 2. PC? MAC? Wh...ich one do YOU know? Does the one you're using fulfill YOUR requirements? Are you willing to put the time in to learn the alternate system? It really doesn't matter what other people use, it doesn't matter how well they use it, and the grass is definitely not all green on the other side. Changing your system is not a cheap exercise so unless you've got money to throw around and a lot of patience, I'd suggest sticking with what you know - most problems can quite easily be fixed or worked around :) See more

12.01.2022 Phone conversation: Caller: Hi, this is XXX from Telstra Computing Services - how are you? @HomeComputing (in the most sarcastic voice ever): Sure you're from Telstra. Next you're going to tell me that you think I have a computer problem and that YOU'RE going to fix it for me? Caller: Hangs up... One approach I seriously didn't think would work so well :) People - nobody from ANY company is going to call you up to fix your computer unless you specifically have that kind of relationship with them already (like us). Do yourself a favour and don't fall into this trap!!!

11.01.2022 If you or anyone you know is on the Autism Spectrum or perhaps you are a teacher and would like more information, or have a child who is Autistic! Come along and support our local community. Make sure you RSVP via Eventbrite

10.01.2022 Don't underestimate the power of a regular backup plan. Quite often I get called to a computer emergency where the person knows about backups but just hasn't done one for a while. Sound familiar? Make it a habit. Set a regular weekly time to backup your files, because if you lose them, it's an expensive exercise getting them back. If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, I'll be happy to come out and assist.

10.01.2022 As you may all be aware, there's a particularly nasty piece of Ransomware making the rounds across the world. Ransomware is a piece of code that will encrypt your files, and then ask you to pay a ransom to be able to get them back again. To all our clients and followers, please be vigilant. Do NOT: -open emails or attachments from people you don't know -click on links in emails that you don't know... -blindly trust material that friends or colleagues send you Always ask yourself the questions: -Was I expecting this information from this person? -Is it relevant to what we're working on or discussing? -Always keep your computer up-to-date with patches (Windows AND MAC), -Always keep your anti-virus updates -Always backup your data -Always stay safe And whatever you do, do NOT pay the ransom, there is no guarantee that you will get your data back. Windows 10 users are less susceptible because Windows updates itself automatically. If you don't have windows 10 it may be time to consider upgrading. If you have other versions of windows, the current patch for the issue can be found here: https://technet.microsoft.com//libr/security/ms17-010.aspx Keep safe

09.01.2022 People are often surprised at how easily their online identity, or even just their accounts can be hijacked. This is more common than one would think. Good security for all accounts usually starts with a good password. Do NOT use common names or words, dates of birth, or easy to guess phrases, because guess what, nobody is sitting there guessing your details - they use programs that can guess thousands of combinations per second. If an option is available to use 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not taking advantage of it. With 2FA, when unauthorised changes occur, you will be asked for the second authentication to continue i.e. an sms or verification email. If the person trying to steal your account doesn't have access to your email or phone, they simply can't make those unauthorised changes.

08.01.2022 This one again on backups.... While it's important to have a backup strategy and one that not only works but is followed, it may be just as important to have a backup backup strategy... that's right, what happens if your backup fails? People too often trust their external hard drive only to have it fail at the most inopportune time. If you're using an external backup - think about using 2 drives. Or even better, try an online (cloud) backup service. And don't ever confuse iCloud or OneDrive as a back up service... you're in for a shock

08.01.2022 Sometimes I like to get away from computers and relax and it is great for my eyes to focus on other things like this amazing place.

07.01.2022 Just remember it is FAKE

04.01.2022 !!!IMPORTANT WARNING!!! While most companies do their best to protect user data, that can't be said for all. If you are a Facebook user and have used an app called "At The Pool" please be aware that there has been a breach and that user information has been compromised including e-mail addresses, usernames, and in some cases passwords!!! If you use this app please make sure you change your password RIGHT AWAY and don't use the same password as other apps/accounts

04.01.2022 12 June 2014 - It's Official - @Home Computing Solutions opens up it's Facebook page in a bid to fix all computers world-wide!!! The owner ponders this statement and exclaims under his breath - "Oh Boy!"

04.01.2022 Have you updated your anti-virus? Do you pay for anti-virus software where you don't even know what benefits it provides? Consider using a free anti-virus. Several companies provide a free version of the software - that's right - FREE! And in general these versions perform just as well as their paid counterparts. If you just need something basic that will check your computer without the additional web site monitoring, email scanner, privacy protector and possible other (sometimes useless) addons, you can save your money and rest assured that you're still protected. Look up Avast and bitdefender just to name a couple.
