24.01.2022 Sadly the great pro coach John McLaren passed away a few weeks ago. John had an outstanding career as a professional sprint coach with his athletes winning many major races including many Burnie Gift. Some of his property has been obtained by the (Devonport) Antique Emporium. The proprietor has a bin full of the hand made Hope Sweeney spikes. ... These were the spikes worn by sprinters before the modern spikes were available. They are beautifully crarfted. If you would like a bit of history a pair can be purchased for $25. They can be posted to you. If interested Mike Gunson can pass on your details - please inbox our page for Mikes email #athstas

23.01.2022 That’s a wrap to day one of the #athstas Age Championships! An action packed day spearheaded by some close track racing (U20 boys 800m ) and highlights in the field. We reached coverage on the North’s LAFM and keep your eyes peeled in the Mercury tomorrow for the mega gallery.... You can keep up to date with the results at http://liveresults.tasathletics.org.au

23.01.2022 End of the week throwback to our 2017-18 #athstas Championships! It saw Gilly claim an overdue sprint victory, some very wet distance running conditions, Hamish taking out another state title, Morgan Gaffney continuing her reign as sprinting queen and the return of some familiar faces in Morey and Hamerlok return to the podium.

23.01.2022 30 years ago today there were no track and field meets in Tasmania so that the Athletics Family could chip in and provide officials and volunteers for the 1990 World Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington - which it did in big numbers. It was a proud time for Olympic sport in Tasmania. Our brothers and sisters in rowing were all occupied in many of the huge number of roles required to present the first ever world championship in Olympic sport in Tassie but that left many sport related positions to be filled. Athletics officials really stepped up and took on many and varied roles including as timekeepers and judges at intermediate points along the course, marshals and weigh-in officials. The international rowing people found it hard to believe these competent folk weren't regular rowing officials.

23.01.2022 "I had no excuses to not run a fast time, I felt strong and backed myself in from the start and just tried to maintain form during the middle stages of the race..." Our media release has gone out this afternoon, recapping some of the achievements from the weekend's 2020 Tasmanian All Schools. Sam Clifford's 3:48 1,500m was a highlight, which - by contrast, was over four-seconds faster than his win at the #athstas Open Championships last season. ... "I'm just excited to be able to run quick early on because it shows the work that had been put in and sets up a great platform to accelerate off for the rest of the season," Clifford said. Our 10-12 year athletes were also in action, featuring in the combined event championships where they competed in a 100m, long jump, shot put and 800m. Congratulations again to all who took part, with special thanks to our volunteers and officials who help make our events possible. 22.01.2022 Stewart McSweyn, youve done it again... we have a NEW AUSTRALIAN RECORD HOLDER for the 3,000m... ... oh and new personal best, third fastest time this year and 17th fastest time EVER. #athstas Stewart has run 7:28.02 in the Rome Diamond League to place 3rd in a blistering field.... His time is over 4-seconds faster than Craigs Mottrams record set 14 years ago to the day. On behalf of us all at Athletics Tasmania, congrats Stew!

18.01.2022 Today we launch Tasmanian Athletics Historical Results Athletics has enjoyed one of the longest, proudest and successful histories of any sport in Tasmanian since European settlement. Initially mainly the province of schoolchildren and the professional running carnivals that were and remain the pride and joy of so many towns and villages around the State, the amateur tradition was a little tardy - eventually finding its roots from 1902 when the Tasmanian Amateur Athleti...Continue reading

12.01.2022 EVENT PREVIEW: 2020 Tasmanian Cross Country Championships Junior vs Senior Battle Shapes Up For Tasmanian Cross Country Title While no stranger to the big stage, all eyes will be on Newstead Athletics member Samuel CLIFFORD in the Open Mens 10km race at the Tasmanian Cross Country Championships this weekend.... The latest course loops around Hobarts Queens Domain precinct and will see runners from U14 through to over 60-years-old take part in events that range from 3km to 10km. The Championships take place on Saturday 22nd August from 12:00pm. Clifford headlines the Open event (1:30pm) and has been in great form, taking out the 5,000m at the Tasmanian Track and Field Championships in early 2020 and representing Australia at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 2019. A strong field of senior runners will be aiming to keep within the rubberband of Clifford, including Ben COVINGTON (SB), Phil McCONNON (NS) and Harvey CHILCOTT (UTAS); who have all been tinkering with success at local events. There is also an impressive contingent of Open Female athletes who toe the start line alongside the men, with Ruby SMEE (SB) and recently named Athletics Tasmania Female Athlete of the Year Milly CLARK (UTAS) the ones to watch. The U16 Male and Female races kick off the event at 12:00pm. Tom WINKEL (NWAC), Isaac BONSEY (UTAS) and Jai ECCLES (NEW) are expected to lead early in the mens event, while Ella ATKINS (OVA) will have to hold off the emerging Avalon FORBES (NS) and Mikayla IRELAND (NS) in the womens 4km. The Championships also incorporates plenty Tasmanian Masters athletes in the over-50 and over-60 age events, wholl look to continue their success after a delayed start to season 2020. The course this year will be difficult. Previous events at the Rokeby Police Academy and Pontville Showgrounds allow for space and rhythm through their relatively free flowing courses, however the Queens domain circuit becomes a technical challenge. Discussion among the running circles are yet to move from which shoes to wear to navigate the potentially water-logged course, with the Open events running three and a bit laps that feature the rolling down hill of Soldiers Memorial Walk, before climbing back to the start through a narrow and undulating nature trail. Catch all the action from 12:00pm around the Queens Domain area! #athstas
