23.01.2022 Happy Friday !!! Say hi to Harmony... she's our new early childhood teacher at Deadly Kindy Burragah and along with her team, our jarjums are off to a great start to the year. Career background? I have been working in the early childhood industry for over 20 years. I started in 1998 studying my certificate III. I have spent over 10 years in management roles and holds a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood).... What’s the most rewarding part of working with children? I believe the first five years of a child's life is very important and can impact on the rest of their life. I love that each day is different and I can help create a brighter future for the children by giving them a great start to life and education. Why is it important to provide a cultural education for our jarjums? Each families’ culture is very important. Working for a Deadly Kindy is a great learning opportunity for myself and provides the jarjums with the environment and opportunity to learn more about their culture, connect with mob and build a stronger sense of belonging and identity. Who inspires you? Different people inspire me daily for different reasons. I love surrounding myself with people that see the best in any situation and want to help and support others. This is one of the reasons that drew me to work for ATSICHS Brisbane; it’s all about supporting community and inspiring others. Hobbies outside of work? Reading, spending time with family, gym, hiking and learning.

20.01.2022 Well done to our early childhood teacher Ava for all her hard work to support our jarjums at Deadly Kindy Waterford West as they transition into prep next year. It’s an important job and Waterford West State School recently acknowledged Ava’s hard work with a certificate of appreciation. Ava has worked hard at arranging excursions to the school, writing kindy reports and working with prep teachers to best support individual children into their classes. 15.01.2022 Say hi to Tereina she’s our Gabba clinic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker and only fitting during NAIDOC Week to highlight her work and dedication to our community. Read on to learn more about Tereina. How long have you been at ATSICHS? Over 9 years ... Career background? I started nursing straight after high school, but it just wasn’t for me at that time in my life. I was fortunate to work as a trainee Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health worker at Bidgerdii Community Health Service in Rockhampton, but was home sick for Brisbane and didn’t complete it. I started at ATSICHS on what was supposed to only be a 1 year contract in 2011 have been here ever since. I’ve been lucky to work in different areas of the service over the years including child and family health, coordinating and working with specialists which involved learning a lot about Medicare, CCSS and now as a clinical health worker. What prompted you to join ATSICHS? Initially it was a job opportunity, but soon after starting it became so much more. I have cherished every single day working here and learnt so many things that you cannot learn in a classroom setting or from a textbook. What’s the most rewarding aspect about working at ATSICHS? My awesome co-workers and patients. Seeing our patients continually come back to our service and being able to see the great changes they make to improve to their health and lifestyle. Also their gratitude for the small things we do is rewarding, from making a simple tea or coffee and or running across the road to pick up their medications, they’re always so thankful. What’s your advice for young mob wanting to work in the health sector? Come in with an open mind, a lot of patience, a will to learn and don’t take things to heart. Hobbies outside of work? Crotchet and arts and craft.

01.01.2022 Happy Monday!! Meet Leanne.. she’s a clinic nurse at the Gabba and one of our many frontline heroes. In this International Year of the Nurse it’s especially fitting to give a special shout out to all our staff who work hard to look after mob. Read more about Leanne below. How long have you been at ATSICHS?... 3 years Career background? I started out as a hospital nurse then was lucky enough to score a job as an Indigenous clinic nurse and discovered my passion. What prompted you work at ATSICHS? The reason I applied and was lucky enough to gain a position with ATSICHS was because I had a friend who had worked here in the past. I was told that I would be working with a great bunch of people in the clinic. Why do you enjoy working at ATSICHS? The reason I have stayed working here for so long is my amazing and talented team mates that I am lucky enough to work with every day. I also love the fact that we can offer our patients such a holistic model of care. How are you overcoming the challenges of COVID-19? The COVID-19 situation has been challenging due to the ever changing requirements. I feel it took a long time for people to understand the significance of the virus and how easily it could be spread. I find that the loneliness and fear of our elderly people is quite heart wrenching, but the support and encouragement we do offer is such a welcome comfort to so many of our vulnerable people. Hobbies outside of work? Besides reading I have two Dalmatians and three amazing young men in my life who keep me busily amused.
