15.01.2022 Today is Mabo Day. On June 3 each year, we commemorate a decision by the High Court of Australia that recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples traditional rights to our land. This recognition was a result of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s courageous decade long struggle that led to the landmark High Court decision that overturned the legal concept of ‘terra nullius’ land belonging to no-one. The Mabo Decision is a great achievement which saw the beginning of the recog...nition of first nations peoples’ land rights in Australia and established the Native Title Act. Sadly, Eddie Koiki Mabo passed away 5 months before the decision was handed down however, we pay homage to his wife Bonita (RIP) who supported him throughout his decade long fight for land rights. In 2002 Bonita Mabo, Eddies wife called for a National public holiday and Eddie Mabo Jnr said: We believe that a public holiday would be fitting to honour and recognise the contribution to the High Court decision of not only my father and his co-plaintiffs, James Rice, Father Dave Passi, Sam Passi and Celuia Salee, but also to acknowledge all Indigenous Australians who have empowered and inspired each other. To date we have not had a public holiday that acknowledges Indigenous people and which recognises our contribution, achievements and survival in Australia. A public holiday would be a celebration all Australians can share in with pride a celebration of truth that unites Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and a celebration of justice that overturned the legal myth of terra nullius Mabo symbolises truth and justice and is a cornerstone of Reconciliation We celebrate his legacy.

14.01.2022 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Legal Service North Queensland coordinator Cathy Pereira said the issue needed to be given special attention from governments. "Certainly, they're disproportionately victims of violence, not just from police but also within the prison system," she said. "There's a huge number of risks placed upon them in terms of the pressures they feel from the responsibilities they have as parents, the fact they deeply miss their children. The risks for Aboriginal women going into custody, you have to add on the fact that many are also primary caregivers to children. The impacts are huge, and as well as that they're often victims of domestic violence and sexual assault."

09.01.2022 Our office will be closed today for the public holiday. We will re-open tomorrow at 8.30am.

02.01.2022 Our organisation is still accepting applications for our Domestic Violence Solicitor position.
