13.01.2022 GAME ANSWER for this weeks What is it? Transponder chip A transponder chip is a tiny device that is located in your key head. It is a security feature for your car to ensure that only the correct keys are being used to start the car. The transponder chip is coded to the car so that no other key can be used to start the car. ... The transponder chip receives and omits radio signals too and from the cars ECU (Computer), effectly telling the car to allow that key to be used. Common issues Transponder chips rarely have any issues themselves. However sometimes issues will arise, When the key ring loop on the key head breaks due to wear and tear. Then some people will attempt to drill a whole through their key head to create a new key ring loop. In some cases the chip will be damaged during this and need replacing. Another problem can arise if the key head breaks apart due to dropping keys or wear and tear. Sometimes the chip may fall out and not be noticed and when the key head is clipped back together the car won’t start as there is no longer a transponder chip. Common symptoms If you have an issue with the transponder chip in your key your car will not start. If you have any issues with your car keys not working be sure to give us a call to discuss the problem. . Thank you to everyone that entered this week. 01.01.2022 GAME ANSWER for this weeks What is it? Alternator An alternator charges the battery by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. The alternator is driven by the fan belt. ... In modern vehicles the alternator is now controlled by the ECU to supply varying voltage to extend battery life. An alternator will supply 13.6 - 14.2 volts to maintain a 12 volt system. Common issues & Common symptoms Overcharging - If the alternator supplies 15 or more volts to the battery it can damage the battery and the entire electrical system. Possible reasons for an alternator to overcharge is a faulty voltage regulator. In older cars if the alternator is overcharging the lights would become brighter and the heater fan would spin faster. However in newer cars it is more difficult to detect. Under charging - If the alternator supplies less than 13 volts it will not charge the battery correctly and may drain the battery power. (flat battery, slowing cranking and hard to start) Possible reasons for an alternator to overcharge is a faulty voltage regulator. Bearing failure - Bearings within the alternator become worn and may make a rumbling/grinding noise. In this case a new alternator is required. Not charging - If the alternator stops working, therefore not charging your battery your battery dash light will come on and the car will loose electrical systems causing the car will stop running. Oil Contamination - Caused by engine oil leaks or power steering oil leaks. Leaking onto or into the alternator causing it to fail. If you have any concerns please done hesitate in contacting us. . Thank you to everyone that entered this week. There is 8 winner winner chicken dinners, and 1 laugh out loud winners.
