24.01.2022 This year 11 November marks the 102nd anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (191418) Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Lest We Forget.

24.01.2022 Our Year 8 specialist STEM students had a unique opportunity this week. They have been able to participate in the STEMing in Asia Youth Summit, where they represented a country and brought forward any issues or problems facing the country, and came up with innovations and solutions within a team setting. All students represented the College tremendously.

23.01.2022 Our Year 7 students have decided that they would like to start collecting donations for the Food Bank in the lead up to Christmas. Food Bank already work with us to support Breakfast Club, so we thought it would be nice to return the favour. We have a collection point in Administration if you would like to support this great cause.

22.01.2022 Kaya Everyone, The theme for NAIDOC Week 2020 is: Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be, recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, engineers, farmers, botanists, scientists, diplomats, astronomers, and artists. Their adaptation and intimate knowledge of the country enabled them to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts, and rising sea levels. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the history of this country a history that dates back thousands of generations. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.

18.01.2022 Last Thursday, our Year 9 and Year 10 RLSP teams participated in the NRLWA Southern Carnival. The Year 9 team performed exceptionally well throughout the day and won the Grand Final 14 -12 against Rockingham Senior High School. The Year 10 team also played some great Rugby League but unfortunately were unable to make the grand final. Well done to everyone on a superb effort.

15.01.2022 The Atwell Area Band has been on a two-day tour stopping to perform at our local primary schools. All students are having a great time living the life of professional musicians.

13.01.2022 A highlight of our NAIDOC Week celebrations was our cultural dance and didgeridoo performance from our indigenous students supported by #AboriginalCulturalExperience #Boorlooexperience, who ensured our students were well prepared. Thanks to all our special guests and family who attended and the staff who organised the event.

11.01.2022 This week, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students had a chance to showcase their didgeridoo and cultural dance skills to the students at Carson Street School. The students represented Atwell College with great pride and received the following heartfelt thank you from a Deputy Principal at Carson Street School. "On behalf of the Carson Street School community, a huge thank you for sharing something special with us today. All students from Atwell College need to be... commended for their performance, and willingness to engage with our children in such a caring manner. Thank you to you, especially for taking the time to arrange this visit. We hope to have you visit again next year! What a great way to end our NAIDOC week celebrations and for our students to promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and build performance and leadership confidence.

11.01.2022 Thank you to the Stephen Michael Foundation who ran over 40 of our Education Support Students through an AFL clinic in preparation for their All Abilities Carnival in December. The students had a fantastic time.

09.01.2022 Congratulations to our Year 11 Certificate 2 Hospitality students who have completed their practical Barista assessments. Students were assessed and deemed competent by Hospitality Group Training assessor Joanne Bunce, who attended the College to evaluate each students’ skills.

08.01.2022 Kaya Everyone, The Noongar word of the week is Waakal. Waakal refers to the Great Serpent-Like Dreamtime Spirit that is central to Noongar beliefs and customs and is recognised as the giver of life, maintaining all freshwater sources. Noongar people believe that the Waakal dominates the earth and the sky. It created fresh waterways such as the bilya/beefier (river), pinjar (swamps, lakes), and ngamma (waterhole). As the Waakal slithered over the land, its track shaped the sa...nd-dunes, its body scoured out the course of the rivers, where it occasionally stopped for a rest, and created bays and lakes. The Waakal rose from Ga-ra-katta (Mt. Eliza at the foot of Kings Park) and formed the Derbarl Yerrigan and the Djarlgarro Beelier (the Swan and Canning rivers). The Waakal also joins up with wetlands such as Herdsman Lake and Lake Monger and resides deep beneath underground springs. Noongar belief in the Waakal and its control over the freshwater is as relevant today as it has been since kura kura long ago.

07.01.2022 Last night our Year 11 students participated in City After Dark, a program organised by the WA Police Department. This program provides strategies, awareness, and knowledge on staying safe while visiting the city. Congratulations to all students on their participation and behaviour.

01.01.2022 Our Year 11 Children, Family, and Community students have completed an Advocacy task involving the collection of bags and toiletry items supporting the Share the Dignity It’s in the Bag campaign for women in the community facing homelessness, domestic violence, or financial hardship. The students sourced much-needed products from family, friends, and the school community and will be donating the completed bags during the annual collection period next week.

01.01.2022 Kaya Everyone, the Noongar word of the week is Kulbardi and Wardong (The Magpie and The Crow). Many traditional Noongar stories provided moral advice to its people and, explains the behaviour of local animals. The story about Kulbardi (Magpie) and Wardung (Crow, or Black Raven), as told by Reverend Sealin Garlett, is about two brothers who did not look after each other and highlights the importance of family unity and supporting one another. It may also explain the swooping behaviour of the magpie as it seeks to fend off the Black Raven or Crow during nesting season.
