23.01.2022 So far, the Future of Work is convivial! At the Pier in Geelong today, the Business Council of Aus presents what I hope will be some great ideas on where we’re heading workwise. AI, automation, increasing use of a just in time approach to workforce...? About to find out.

22.01.2022 Destination attained. Well in about 60 meters. Exciting to be working out in the lovely Yarra Ranges today.

21.01.2022 The vital importance of Vision In the midst of this global crisis, I want to urge all of us, particularly leaders, to remember the importance of Vision. In good times and in times of crisis, progress starts with a vision a picture or description of what we’re working towards.... When we follow a vision, obstacles that might otherwise have blocked us don’t seem as hard to deal with. The vision draws us forward. Great leaders bring such vision, and help others create it. Visionary leaders transform the organisations they lead, bringing focus, joy and synergy to individual and collective work. Sometimes, old beliefs can get in the way of creating a vision, or holding to it when things get tough. If that happens, become aware of the beliefs that might be governing your behaviour but are not consistent with your vision. At times like this, it can help to go back to basics - take a moment, breathe, check in with yourself: What is my vision for the future? What is my vision for today? Is there anything that I believe that’s in the way of that coming about? So, what can I now do differently, that will help me, and us, get on track towards our preferred outcome? And of course, it will feel better to be showing up that way. Check in to your Vision, it matters more now than ever!

20.01.2022 Breaking into the job market or seeking a new role - how do you keep optimistic and just keep going, if the time stretches out without results? Fabulous little piece here gives some great tips if you're on the search and don't seem to be getting there...yet! The recommendations? Diagnose, cast a wider net, keep active, stay connected. While some apply to anyone on the hunt, the ideas about 'casting a wider net' could be particularly relevant in the challenge of the long job search.

20.01.2022 Great #Leadership development - it's among my favourite work these days and it's always rewarding to see the results in people transforming how they show up as leaders. In a recent group the concept of groundhog day resonated strongly - same old stuff keeps repeating. So what to do about that?

19.01.2022 Spectacular venue at Federal Mills for tonight’s Geelong Chamber of Commerce get-together.

17.01.2022 How hitting PAUSE can be vital in implementing a Vision Vision is vital in this incredible environment of lockdown, but let’s face it, a new vision is not so easy to implement, especially if it involves a big change of pace, direction or approach from the way we did things previously. If you’ve ever tried to make a significant change personal or organisational - you’ll have noticed that it’s all too easy to never quite get that change implanted; and to slip back to old ways...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Boards are increasingly aware of the vital nature of Culture, even when evaluating M&A opportunities - http://atworkconsulting.com.au/boards-now-seeing-culture-a/

15.01.2022 As we bunker down for a little longer yet, it's timely now to start thinking about how to position ourselves and our business in the new post-lockdown world. https://atworkconsulting.com.au/whats-the-strategy-as-covi/

14.01.2022 Leading yourself, through the new (ab)normal... What does the weekend hold now, in these times of our new normal (or ‘new abnormal’ as I’ve heard it called)? As we head into the weekend, it feels very different to our normal weekend of old. It’s still the end of the week but we’re not heading out for drinks or a meal tonight, we’re not planning the usual sport, entertainment or getaways for tomorrow, and the big dinner with family and friends for Sunday is off too.... At a time like this it can be too easy to just let go of all the things that keep us well. So I thought to share a couple of insights I gleaned from a fabulous webinar with the global Leadership Circle network this morning. 1. Double down on self-care practices. People often abandon self-care at times like these. And yet we want and need to be there for our loved ones, and for those who rely on us at work. Ideally we feel enough self-love to want to be there for ourselves too! Rather than just letting go of all the practices that keep us well, it’s time to flip the switch to taking care of yourself as much as (or more than) ever. This will also mean we can be more available to others. My favourite new thing is a suspension trainer basically meaning that even if I can’t do whole body weight chin-ups (might be able to manage one!) I can still do a great workout, in the garage, with that handy device and a few weights. 2. See this space as opportunity. What about the space opened in your calendar up by the new lack of all those activity bookings on an ‘old normal’ weekend? How can you see that opening space as an opportunity, space and time to innovate? Personally I struggle with how to replace that 9 or 18 holes on the golf course. Not only infuriatingly fascinating in trying to hit great shots or improve the score, it is also a good 5 or 10km stroll in an enjoyable environment. Still working on that one!! Virtual golf is just not the same. Golf apps don’t do it for me. But, I do have that time free for something rewarding, developmental, or for contributing in some way. 3. Manage anxiety and increasing your awareness-scanning. Check inside to understand where you are and how that’s going we are probably having to do this more often in this strange new world. Anxiety is natural in these circumstances, but by checking in, breathing, calming, we can be aware of how we are travelling, and of if our own anxiety is impacting on that of others. Take care, and I hope this might be of use as we step into the new normal!

13.01.2022 So this guy does sessions on leadership! Awesome poet, about to discover how he connects those dots at a session this morning. http://www.davidwhyte.com/#home

12.01.2022 #Engagement. Every organisation wants it! Here's a bunch of ways to provide a better workplace experience for your team. And some of them are pretty easy to implement.

11.01.2022 Strategy. The connection to the Leadership Circle’s Creative-Reactive framework in this one simple idea suggest it’s well worth factoring in. ‘Creative’ is future focussed. ‘Reactive’ is a response to the past, and Strategy that’s just reactive will tend to bring incremental (at best) rather than awesome outcomes. Either could be relevant depending on where a biz is at, so it’s best to be clear on this when setting out on the strategy process.

11.01.2022 The word 'crisis' has been often linked to the concepts of both 'danger' and 'opportunity', and that's certainly true of the COVID-19 crisis. While we are variously bunkered down or operating in constrained environments, it's time now to get proactive about a very different future once we emerge. https://atworkconsulting.com.au/whats-the-strategy-as-covi/

05.01.2022 Futurist Phil Ruthven in Geelong for AICD today. Australia is the only major country in the world without a recession in the last 21 years. And the way to avoid one - keep Capital Expenditure up.

04.01.2022 Reboot workspaces - what will change? In reboot, one of the biggest questions facing organisations right now is what could, and what should we change as our teams get back to the workplace? Indeed, workspace is going to be huge and when we say huge, that is likely to include the amount of space between people relative to how it was prior to lockdown.... The Australian Financial review today outlines how Westpac begins a back-to-the-office trial involving 500 staff from today. As part of the two-week trial, staff will have their temperatures checked and be allocated a permanent desk, with alternate desks taped off to ensure social distancing. And Westpac has said it won’t be forcing any of its staff to return to the office - keeping a mix of people working from home and working in the office each week. At Perth’s Woodside, staff have returned using an alternating roster. CBA also has put in place plans for half of its staff to return, with social distancing measures, temperature checks and a limit of four people in lifts. It's certainly a time for organisations to work closely with their people, given the natural concerns that many of us have about proximity and the danger of second waves. Of course, this is really highlighted in workplaces that have moved to ‘activity-based work’, and particularly those that have gone heavily into hot-desking. In fact, we reckon hot-desking is dead even if this means a 'phasing out' approach in workplaces where it will require major rebuilds. It’s a challenge, as a lot of businesses have moved to these types of spaces feeling that it enhances collaboration a good thing even if the evidence shows that it ain’t necessarily so! It is clear though that one of the downsides of WFH, which will be retained for sure at a higher level than before, is how to encourage that natural conversation that comes about by just ‘bumping into’ people around the workspace. Though of course bumping into people is now totally out!! And there is also the downside of the tech at work generally being better than the tech at home. Hmm, what are you thinking about reboot and getting back to the workplace?

04.01.2022 Is it easier to be a member of a virtual team, a co-located team, or a hybrid? In these unprecedented times, more work teams are Hybrid or fully Virtual rather than all co-located onsite. Some insightful research from 12 years ago took an early look at this unexpected situation we’re now in. A 2008 study published in The International Journal of Human Resource Management surveyed the IT employees of a global company. Among other findings, the researchers were surprised to d...iscover that the teams with the highest level of satisfaction were the entirely virtual teams. And who had the lowest levels of trust and group identity? Check out the video, it's in there, along with some tips for managing or working in this strange new world. #teams #virtual #management #newnormal See more
