08.01.2022 Sugar and your brain Table sugar is the generic name for sucrose; a combination of glucose and fructose. Each molecule of sugar contains 12 carbon atoms, 22 ...hydrogen atoms and 11 oxygen atoms. Glucose is the primary source of energy for your cells. Because the brain consists of so many neurons; it is the most energy demanding organ. Brain functions such as thinking, memory, and learning are closely linked to glucose levels and how efficiently the brain uses this fuel source. Although the brain needs glucose to function; too much of this energy source can have consequences. When you consume sugar; it activates the tongue’s receptors and a message is sent to the brain. This sugar-induced signal stimulates the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens; activating the brain’s reward system. This is the same brain region implicated in response to cocaine and heroin. Regular sugar consumption can change the availability of dopamine receptors in both the midbrain and frontal cortex. Continuous consumption of sugar over time leads to prolonged dopamine signalling, greater excitation of the brain’s reward pathways. The brain becomes tolerant to sugar and more sugar is needed to attain the same ‘sugar high’. Research suggests that a sugar heavy diet, insulin resistance and high blood glucose levels are linked with a greater risk for developing neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's. However; if there is not enough glucose in the brain, neurotransmitters are unable be easily produced; therefore communication between neurons can break down. When there are low glucose levels in the blood (hypoglycemia), it can lead to loss of energy for brain function and is also linked to poor attention and cognitive function. Research has shown that sugar forms free radicals in the brain’s membrane. These free radicals prevent nerve cells from effectively sending signals to each other. The consequences of this can include decreased cognition and an inability to regulate our moods. Elevated blood sugar binds to protein; in a process called glycation. Glycated proteins are associated with an increased production of free radicals. #nhneurotraining
