20.01.2022 As a follow up on my random listening recommendations I wish to share the pleasure a recent purchase of Paul Lewis playing Beethoven is giving me - and I'm only CD 2 into a 14 CD set. Having read about Mr Lewis for over a decade I confess to never having heard a note of his while he picks up an award after an award. How can someone whose name we (I mean I) can pronounce play so well? Well it has been my loss as I regret not investigating this artist sooner. The subsequent releases have received a mixed reception as he has played around with numerous ideas but here with Monovision we have another essential listen. Completely self penned, produced and performed this is a remarkable achievement and in the main welcomely positive given the current world scenario we find ourselves in. 02.01.2022 Seriously now, this is the Beethoven year. 250 years since his birth. I have loved his piano sonatas since the days I used to play them (the "easy" ones) back in my school days. I have listened to many, many recordings and these days reach for the Richard Goode set for an almost daily listen. It really does help the day. It staggers me that you can now stream the complete set. I suggest you add it to your playlist or favourites and just dip in over a coffee, or two. Tip - listen to one sonata at a time, don't take on a CD with three sonatas. More time - just repeat the one you just heard or find an alternative performance. Life enhancing.
