Conditions are looking good this Saturday as thousands of metro ...abalone fishers prepare to get stuck into a great fishery on Perth’s doorstep. The metro ablone season kicks off on Saturday morning with fishing permitted from 7am to 8am. Abalone fishers highly value this great resource. And thanks to them sticking to the rules as part of a fishery management plan, recruitment of Roe’s abalone have returned to levels prior to the 2010/11 marine heatwave. As a result, we get back a fifth day of abalone fishing in the metro zone this summer. So, get out there and enjoy it! Meanwhile, Recfishwest will continue to work hard to improve access to abalone as the fishery continues to move in the right direction. Licensed abalone recfishers can catch abalone in the metro zone, from Guilderton to Busselton across five Saturdays, between 7am and 8am on the following days: 12 December; 9 January; 23 January; 6 February; and, 20 February. 23.01.2022 Don’t forget the seasonal closure for demersal finfish starts today in the West Coast Bioregion, from Black Point east of Augusta to the Zuytporp Cliffs north o...f Kalbarri, and continues until 15 December (inclusive). You cannot fish for, take, bring onto land, or be in possession of demersal finfish on a boat within the West Coast Bioregion during this period. If you catch a demersal finfish from a boat or from shore in this area during the closed season, you must return it to the water immediately with the least possible injury to the fish. This annual closure is one of the management measures in place to reduce the recreational and charter catch of popular species including WA dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper by 50%, to allow them to recover by 2030. Alternative management arrangements are also in place to reduce the commercial sector catch by 50% to allow this resource to recover by 2030. The West Coast demersal scalefish resource is currently halfway through a 20 year recovery plan and while there are some early signs of recovery, there is still a long way to go. Th...ese data recorders help us to track the movements of sharks tagged as part of the scientific non-lethal SMART drumline trial. In the Capes region off Gracetown there is an extensive network of data-recording VR2 receivers secured to the sea bed. This includes the locations of Three Bears, Windmills, Injidup, Yallingup and Prevelly. Occasionally, in extreme weather events, the receivers may break free of their mooring and wash ashore.
