21.01.2022 The Australian High Commission was delighted to farewell 148 passengers taking the Australian Government facilitated Qantas flight from #Johannesburg to #Perth on 13 November. It was a pleasure to welcome back to South Africa the Qantas B787-9 aircraft #EmilyKameKngwarreye, painted by an indigenous artist and the latest in Qantas’ flying art series - a perfect way to celebrate #NAIDOCweek. Passengers will now be undertaking their 14 days of quarantine in Perth. Special thanks to the hardworking consular team in Pretoria and Canberra who made it all possible. 20.01.2022 For the #16Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the High Commission reached out to friends and colleagues to participate in an awareness-raising video campaign speaking to issues of debunking gender stereotypes, myths around #GBV, challenging norms around masculinity and how to address lack of resources around fighting this scourge. Australia, like South Africa, is dealing with high rates of domestic violence. In 2019, almost a third of all homicide and related offences were linked to family and domestic violence. Bearing this in mind, Australia (including through our work at the High Commission) is committed to ending all types of discrimination against women and girls to create an inclusive society. #IDEVAW

17.01.2022 In celebration of #NAIDOCweek we look back to the support provided by the Australian High Commission to #Indigenous communities in our countries of accreditation. In Namibia, we provided support through funding the local language #Oshindonga ‘Synonyms Dictionary’ in January 2020, in partnership with the Namibia Research Institute for Indigenous Knowledge (#Namrik). The dictionary was launched by Namibia’s founding President Dr Sam #Nujoma through an initiative of the Namibian Australia Awards Alumni Association, and utilising Australia Awards Alumni and Direct Aid Funding (#DAP). 14.01.2022 Message from Australia's Ambassador for Gender Equality Julie-Ann Guivarra. Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. UN Women is asking people to #OrangeTheWorld for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Australia joins partners around the world to support calls for collective efforts to promote approaches to violence against women and girls. The elimination of violence against women is a key priority for the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Our COVID-19 response strategy, ‘Partnerships for Recovery’ places gender equality at its centre. Now, more than ever, coming together to end violence against women and girls, is key to creating a more gender-equal world and inclusive societies for all. #IDEVAW #GBV #OrangeTheWorld #16Days #EVAW

12.01.2022 Australian volunteer Rucha Bhagat was supporting South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) through the Australian Volunteers Program before COVID-19 struck. She has since gone on to become one of the program’s first remote volunteers, carrying on her support from back home in Australia: ‘While the world may seem to be at a standstill currently, there is immense value in forging and maintaining personal and professional relationships. ' ‘I thoroughly enjoyed my ...limited time in-countrythe opportunity was tremendous. I was able to cultivate long-lasting professional and personal relationships with my colleagues and our stakeholders. Hence, it was a no-brainer to continue my assignment remotely. ' ‘I am currently working on SAIIA Futures' #eMobility project that focuses on how a post-pandemic just, green recovery can accelerate South Africa and the Southern African Development Community's (#SADC) #sustainablegrowth in the decades to come. We have been virtually engaging with policymakers, diplomats, international organisations and industry to drive public dialogue in South Africa and the region on the transition to e-Mobility and other sustainable forms of transport and energy sources.’ ~

10.01.2022 Many thanks to Wesgro for hosting an extremely informative webinar on trade and investment between Australia and the Western Cape on 17 November. There is a great deal of scope for collaboration to generate new business opportunities with chambers of commerce operating in Johannesburg the Australian Business Chamber of Commerce - Southern Africa (#ABCSA), and in Melbourne the Australia Africa Chamber of Commerce (#AACC). South Africa’s Sea Harvest and Australia's #FlightCentre provided testimonials on how they have each grown their investments on both sides of the #IndianOcean.

10.01.2022 At this stage, there are no further government-facilitated flights from South Africa to Australia scheduled.
