22.01.2022 H2X Marine, the new boat building arm of hydrogen fuel cell vehicle manufacturer H2X, has begun building water craft powered by green renewable energy. The company will initially produce a range of zero emission passenger ferries for industrial and commercial use, and prototype hulls have already been produced. CEO of H2X Marine, Samuel Blackadder, said the company would lean heavily on technology developed by hydrogen fuel cell vehicle developer H2X Australia, whose plans we...re first revealed by @AuManufacturing in June. H2X Marine headquarters are located in Brisbane, with construction by local company Wildcat Marine Limited, a ship building specialist with more than 30 years experience in commercial vessels, including passenger ferries. Chairman of H2X Marine, Mr Craig Elvin said: We are making a significant capital investment in this new industry because we firmly believe that the use of green hydrogen is the fuel to drive Australia’s industry as we phase out fossil fuels. We should be demonstrating the ferry by Q1 of next year." https://lnkd.in/gkZnD2E

20.01.2022 It was enjoyable to catch up with Mike Grainger of Liferaft Systems Australia Pty LTD, whose factory I had the pleasure of visiting a few years back. Then as now as when they started in 1992 with one customer (Incat) LSA remains focussed on doing one thing better than anyone else in the world: making marine evacuation systems (MES) and liferafts. These look similar to a slide leading into a bright orange jumping castle, and are designed to inflate quick smart and get people off a boat and to safety if there's an accident. LSA exports 95 per cent of what they make and their customers include navies, superyacht owners, and ferry operators. It has prospered by sticking to high-value, low-volume manufacturing, existing in a niche occupied by only three companies worldwide. https://www.aumanufacturing.com.au/australias-niche-champio

17.01.2022 "So why not aspire then to be a big fish in a big pond? Nice aspiration but then be ready to fight it out with really big fish who will out-scale you, out-spend you, and overwhelm you to protect their pot of gold. Probably not the smartest strategy, especially if you’re an Australian based SME manufacturer," writes Stephen Tomisich of Trajan Scientific and Medical. "There is another way. Find a small pond, a niche. What do I hear you say? Niches equal small dollars? Not neces...sarily. It is surprising how large the most specialised of niches can be on a global scale." A fascinating article on niche strategy in our "Australia's niche champions" series, which is now in its fourth day. https://www.aumanufacturing.com.au/australias-niche-champio
