23.01.2022 MYANMAR'S MILITARY COUP: CHALLENGING DEMOCRACY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA Time: 12:00pm AEDT Date: Wednesday 24 February 2021... Last month, the military upended years of quasi-democratic rule in Myanmar in a carefully orchestrated coup. Military leaders justified the takeover by alleging voter fraud in the 2020 November election, which the National League for Democracy (NLD) had won in a landslide. The civilian leader of Myanmar and the NLD, former Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, was detained by the military, along with dozens of officials, law-makers and aides. The military announced that it will remain in power for one year, with ultimate authority resting with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. Some suspect the military will stay in charge beyond that, returning to the time prior to Myanmar’s first democratic reforms in 2011. What were the driving factors behind the military coup? Does Myanmar have a long-term future as a democratic country? What response should be expected from the international community, and what are the implications for regional stability in Southeast Asia? SPEAKERS: Hunter Marston, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, Australian National University Christopher Lamb, President of the Australia Myanmar Institute; Honorary Associate Professor - The University of Melbourne; and, Former Australian Ambassador to Myanmar Wai Wai Nu, Peace, Human Rights and Women Rights Advocate, Founder of Women's Peace Network, Myanmar CHAIR: Dr Bec Strating, Executive Director, La Trobe Asia PARTICIPATE ONLINE link: https://latrobe.zoom.us//register/WN_ZYq5Q6_uQoiZ4R2geFqlUg

18.01.2022 NGOs working with vulnerable Myanmar people Australia Myanmar Institute invites you to a scheduled Zoom meeting Date: July 27, 2020 (Monday). ... Duration: 1 hour Time: 6:00-7:00 PM Australia/Melbourne Time (2:30-03:30 PM Myanmar/Yangon Time) Join Zoom Meeting: https://monash.zoom.us/j/98014774938 Meeting ID: 980 1477 4938 Two NGOs will profile their work. One will be speaking about the situation of Kayin people on the Thai border and the other will describe its work with victims of human trafficking in Yangon. Both organisations work in Myanmar and have strong Australian connections. This is important, for while the COVID-19 crisis is critically important we must not lose sight of the priority for other especially vulnerable people. David Home is the Development Coordinator for Sharing Hope, an NGO which works extensively with refugees and displaced people on the Kayin border with Thailand https://sharinghope.org.au/. He has travelled four times to the border region and knows the communities and their needs well. He is trained in Youth Work and Community Development, having completed his Bachelors of International Development in 2016 from Australia Catholic University. Thiha Nyi Nyi works with Akhaya Women https://www.akhaya.org/en as the organisation’s Program Manager with a focus on leading the program of prevention and response on violence against women and girls, as well as women’s empowerment initiatives. He is committed to gender equity and social inclusion and has worked with Akhaya Women and other NGOs for many years and is a strong advocate for the rights of women, girls and other marginalised groups. His current project involves the training of female silver-smiths from anywhere in Myanmar, including the border regions, to provide skills for financial security and self-reliance. The program is challenging long-held beliefs about the roles of women and men and is training women who have escaped violence or the risk of violence, in the art of jewellery making. Akhaya Women is a Myanmar NGO supported by a prominent AMI sponsor, Anglican Overseas Aid. For more information about AMI, please visit: aummi.edu.au/. 16.01.2022 AMI was very much saddened to learn today that U Htike Zaw, an NLD MP-elect from Kyaukme in the Shan State was shot dead at his home by two men on a motorcycle. This comes five days after shots were fired into the home of the Chair of the Township Electoral Commission by persons believed to be "not satisfied" by the election results. This has all the appearances of shocking election violence and AMI trusts that the perpetrators will be found and brought to justice without delay.

15.01.2022 MYANMAR AND COVID-19 IMPACT ON THE PRIVATE SECTOR The COVID-19 pandemic of early 2020 caused a global contraction in economic demand and supply that saw hundreds of millions of workers around the globe stood down or only able to access reduced hours of work. In May, the Business Coalition for Gender Equality (BCGE) and UN Women launched a survey to assess the impact of COVID-19 on employers and employees. Today, we are pleased to share with you the findings from these surveys... in a report funded by Investing in Women, an initiative of the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The report provides an analysis of the impact of the pandemic on private business and not-for-profit organisations in Myanmar and draws on the perspectives of employers from 24 private sector businesses and 6 not-for-profit organisations as well as employees from 1 firm. 12.01.2022 Myanmar Elections a comment from former Australian Ambassador Early results indicate another massive victory for Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party in Myanmar’s 8 November general election. Ninety-one political parties fielded candidates, but the elections were again essentially a first-past-the-post contest between the NLD, identifying with democracy and a change from military rule, and the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (U...SDP), identifying with stability and security. Women constituted only 16% of the candidates. Unlike 2015, when the NLD didn’t field a single Muslim candidate, this year it fielded two. 11.01.2022 Statement from the Myanmar Research Network based at the University of Melbourne on the 2021 military coup On 1 February 2021, Myanmar’s military seized control of the country, arrested democratically elected leaders, and declared a year-long state of emergency. The coup presents a major blow to long-standing hopes for democratisation and peace in Myanmar. Throughout the country, citizens are responding through a growing movement of peaceful ‘civil disobedience’ and public... protests in cities and towns. As members of the Myanmar Research Network which is based out of the University of Melbourne and includes researchers, students, alumni and colleagues in Australia and in Myanmar we are deeply concerned by the military’s actions and by the impacts that these will have on the lives and welfare of Myanmar’s diverse peoples. We condemn the military coup, the arrest and detention of elected civilian leaders and their advisors, the disruption of telecommunication services, and the denial of citizens’ democratic rights and freedoms. We are extremely concerned for the safety and wellbeing of people throughout Myanmar. And we extend our thoughts and solidarity to all our friends, colleagues, students and alumni in and from Myanmar. We also extend our solidarity to the Unimelb Myanmar Student Association and Myanmar Students in Victoria, who have been working very hard since the coup to support Myanmar students during this difficult time and to coordinate with other associations across Australia, in response to the coup. Together, Myanmar Students in Australia have issued a public statement on the coup, which you can access here: https://www.facebook.com//pcb.1394812180/1394812107534074/ In looking to the future, we will continue to work on supporting progressive political and social change in Myanmar. In particular, we aim to continue supporting our student community and collaborating with researchers, activists, civil society groups and others in and from Myanmar who are committed to respect for human rights and democracy. We hope that the will and democratic rights of Myanmar’s people will be respected and that civilian rule will be rapidly restored.
