25.01.2022 By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. Benjamin Franklin
25.01.2022 As we age, our immune system becomes less effective at fighting infections and becomes less responsive to vaccinations. Compounding this at the same time our ageing immune system is associated with chronic inflammation. This increases the risk of almost all conditions linked to old age. The good news is science shows us these can be reduced and delayed many years. What’s your wellness strategy?
24.01.2022 What’s the number 1 cause of death in Australia? Heart related diseases, It’s number 1 in Australian men and number 2 for Australian women. Life style factors play a huge role, but so do genetics. What do your genes say? Why don’t you find out?
23.01.2022 These stunning King-Parrots grace us with their presence this time of the year. The only Australian Parrot with a fully red head (males). These birds appear distinctly red and green to humans but when viewed under ultraviolet light, some feathers on the wings appear with a prominent yellow glow. And like many birds these parrots have four types of cone in their retina (compared to only three in humans) and can see some ultraviolet wavelengths.
22.01.2022 Want to live a long healthy life? Then watch your vitamin D levels. Studies (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5206371/ ) show individuals with the highest vitamin D levels had the longest telomeres and those with the lowest levels the shortest telomeres. What’s this have to do with life spans? ... While genetics play a role a Spanish study (https://www.pnas.org/content/pnas/116/30/15122.full.pdf) shows the length of our telomeres accurately predicts our life span. Note a telomere is a region of repetitive nucleotide sequences at each end of a chromosome, which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration or from fusion with neighboring chromosomes. In lay terms its the tape or cap at the end of your shoe lace that’s stops it fraying! As we age the length of the telomeres shrinks.
21.01.2022 Improve your immune system now, how? For a start do you have elevated IL-6 (or Interleukin 6) levels? IL-6 is a well-known pro-inflammatory cytokine. It is produced by macrophages and adipocytes (fat cells). Increased levels of IL-6 are found in obese or highly stressed people. High levels of IL-6 are associated with higher body temperatures, and chronic diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. And if that’s not enough to... spring into action chronically increased IL-6 levels increases the susceptibility to viral and other infections. Know your DNA and if you are more susceptible to high IL-6 levels.
20.01.2022 Do anything, but let it produce joy. Walt Whitman
17.01.2022 The future is about individual diets and nutrition, vitamins and exercise.... https://www.thetimes.co.uk//is-everything-you-thought-abou
17.01.2022 Getting old is part of life but let’s face there is no need to be in a hurry to get there! Have you heard of AC-11? It’s a bioactive extract of Uncaria tomentosa, a woody vine which grow in South America (also known as cats claw). It has been shown in clinical trials to help the body repair sun and environmental stress- related damage to DNA and to slow down the process of skin aging. Because of its concentration of polyphenols, including tannin, and its ability to support i...mmune function. It’s estimated that our DNA is confronted with over 10,000 lesions per cell per day and that by age 25, these injuries begin to overwhelm the repair processes, accelerating aging. Harm to DNA from free radicals is due to both endogenous factors like a lack of antioxidants and environmental factors like diet, exercise, stress, pollution and sun exposure. This damage causes mutations in human cells and is a leading cause of the onset of premature aging and a loss of functional health and energy. AC-11 has been shown to slow this never-ending cycle of chronic conditions by stopping the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines at the gene level.
16.01.2022 An awesome morning out beds of cosmos flowers, can’t wait to see them in full bloom:)
14.01.2022 Vitamin D is an essential vitamin that boosts the immune system and plays vital roles in human metabolism. Did you know that tasty mushrooms are one source for vitamin D, and that you can naturally multiply their levels by exposing them to sunlight?
13.01.2022 Spent the day planting seeds getting ready for spring, flowers and food. While it may not be possible for everyone to grow their own food it’s really important to buy local in season fresh produce, supporting your local farmers and growers, and getting the most nutritious food possible. The longer food travels or is stored the lower the nutrient content.
13.01.2022 Australian men rank 3rd fatest in the world behind the US and Chile, not something to be proud of! A new study finds more than 70% of men aged 3557 were overweight or obese, are you? https://tentomen.org.au/research-fi/insights-report/obesity
13.01.2022 A windy couple of days resulted in some felled trees on the proper with one on some sheep fencing which had to be removed. I thought this was a poignant moment.
11.01.2022 Bursting into life, new season winter rhubarb. A rich source of antioxidants, high in vitamin K1 and cholesterol lowering fibre. Did you know winter rhubarb is less sour, with less sunshine available rhubarb contains a lower oxalic acid content, which is the cause of its trade mark sour taste.
11.01.2022 I’ve always struggled with my weight, particularly around my waist. Even when I’ve been extremely active cycling, my go to activity to keep fit and mobile meditation. Today I received my wellness DNA report and I’ve inherited gene SNP’s from both my parents (which is why they are shown in red) meaning I have predisposition to weight and obesity issues. Now armed with this information I have a clear path to better manage this issue with a very specific nutritional plan created just for me, nice one
10.01.2022 We know shorter telomeres in your chromosomes are correlated with a shorter life expectancy. But did you know eating highly processed foods regularly significantly decreases telomere length? (https://academic.oup.com//article-abst/111/6/1259/5824715) So a diet high in processed junk food really can impact your life expectancy.
08.01.2022 It’s been a tough winter and not just because of the recent cold weather and abundant rain. But spring is just around the corner, a time for renewal and growth. Use this time of natural and forced dormancy to plan to make the most of the sunny days not far away
07.01.2022 A sunny day but unfortunately the strong northerly winds are taking away any enjoyment so I had a great idea! I retreated to our new glass house to read a book. Actually an old book about the Fukushima tsunami and subsequent nuclear meltdown, a huge disaster. Of course nature played a huge role, but so did human stupidity. This is of special interest to me as my son and I were stuck on a chair lift for sometime on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido snow boarding when the earthquake struck just of japan. The warmth did get to me and I drifted off to sleep. When I awoke this was my view and it took a few seconds to realise where I was
07.01.2022 We are more alien than human, we have more foreign cells on and in us than human cells. We are literally teeming with bacteria, fungi, virus, bugs, mitochondria etc etc on our skin and hair, in our gut and other places. We can’t survive without them, and this has always been the case. In fact our DNA in not entirely human DNA. We are very much a part of nature, not separate from it so I don’t know why we think otherwise. Soil health effects human health, the foods we eat predominantly made using factory farming techniques employing chemicals degrade the soil, wipe out nature’s diversity, reduce the inherent nutrition in our food and as a result effect our health. Eat organically grown food, support your local regenerative farmers and growers, grow your own food. Let nature heal and heal us.
06.01.2022 So many scientifically backed benefits of garlic. Did you know that garlic consumption lowers the risk of arthritis? Hip osteoarthritis Women whose diets were rich in allium vegetables had lower levels of osteoarthritis, a team at King’s College London and the University of East Anglia, both in England, reported in the journal BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. Examples of allium vegetables include garlic, leeks, shallots, onions, and rakkyo.... The study authors said their findings not only highlighted the possible impact of diet on osteoarthritis outcomes but also demonstrated the potential for using compounds that exist in garlic to develop treatments for the condition. The long-term study, involving more than 1,000 healthy female twins, found that those whose dietary habits included plenty of fruit and vegetables, particularly alliums such as garlic, had fewer signs of early osteoarthritis in the hip joint.
03.01.2022 I’m constantly surprised how the tiniest seed, or magnificent flower on a fruit tree turns into something amazingly nutritious and pretty. Natures blue print contained in littlest of things!
03.01.2022 Know your DNA. What’s The VDR gene (Vitamin D Receptor) produces a protein receptor that plays a key role in effectively utilizing Vitamin D in your body. However some of us have SNP’s in this gene. Why should you care? Vitamin D is required along with vitamin K and calcium for good bone health. And I’ve previously posted (28th August) the link with telomeres and age expectancy.
03.01.2022 Another lock down project completed. It’s not a product space in-terms of growing produce for sale, when planted out it’s just a space to sit and enjoy, to meditate, read or just enjoy a coffee and the wildlife. Frankly these sorts of projects have mentally helped me hugely at a time when so much emphasis has been put on dealing with a virus regardless of all the other consequences.
01.01.2022 Trouble sleeping? Feeling tired during the day as a result? Your sleep cycles are largely regulated by melatonin, a hormone produced by your brain’s pineal gland in response to changing light each day. As darkness begins to fall, the pineal gland secretes melatonin, which makes you start to feel sleepy.... Levels of this hormone stay relatively high throughout the night while you sleep, and then drop off again as light emerges in the morning, easing you into wakefulness. The good news is that the beneficial bacteria in your gut can boost your body’s supply of melatonin by increasing your blood levels of tryptophan, an amino acid precursor to melatonin that can keep your sleep-wake cycles in sync. So how is your gut health?
01.01.2022 I haven’t checked by blood pressure for a while, something I had been doing weekly. I’m not sure why I stopped? Perhaps with all this COVID noise regular health activities, including doctors checkups and eating healthy have seemed less important with so much of our current lives seemingly out of our control. Time to get back track! The good news even though I’ve probably put on some weight (the visit to the scales is next!!) my blood pressure is still in the normal range:)... How is yours?
