25.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 4-11 July ~ HEAL COUNTRY 'Aboriginal people talk about Country in the same way that they would talk about a person: they speak to Country, sing to Country, visit Country, worry about Country, feel sorry for Country, and long for Country. People say that Country knows, hears, smells, takes notice, takes care, is sorry or happy Country is a living entity with a yesterday, today and tomorrow, with a consciousness and a will toward life'. D. Rose First Nation...s ancient knowledge systems have maintained, soothed and restored Country for tens of thousands of years. Listen deeply to First Nations Peoples who lead the way and change systems to support Country's 'will toward life' which is intrinsically intertwined with ours. 23.01.2022 Beautiful and timely cover of Kev Carmody’s song The Gurindji Strike ~ The Wave Hill Walk Off ~ On 23rd August, 1966, Gurindji tribal Elder Vincent Lingiari led 200 Aboriginal workers off their jobs at the Wave Hill cattle station, 800 kilometres south of Darwin, where they worked for the British pastoral company Vestey. It was a strike that would last 7 years! The Gurindji's complaints included low wages and poor conditions but the focus of the campaign moved from workers...' rights to Land Rights. The seven year Gurindji strike was successful and is a foundational moment in the Aboriginal Land Rights movement in Australia!

19.01.2022 'Tucker' is a song on the 'happy to be me' CD, adapted into a picture book. Illustrated by Wiradjuri artist, Narelle Urquhart, the lyrics and art depict traditional and contemporary scenarios around tucker and family. Here's a sneak peak: 'Noongar kids, we love our tucker, love to eat up all our food. When our mob all get together, sharing is the golden rule'.... Indigenous mob some time ago, ate from the bush and loved it so. Hunting, collecting from the land...no white sugar and food in cans!' Koori kids, living in the city, we eat out on Saturday night. Great to try new tasty dishes and lick our lips after every bite.' Tucker ~ BOOK/CD available @ SHOP www.auntywendysmob.com

19.01.2022 Today, on the eve of the 26 January, we mourn the coming day, when the invasion of Aboriginal lands changed everything for First Nations Peoples and we celebrate the deep resilience of Aboriginal Peoples and the survival of the oldest, continuous living cultures in the world. 19.01.2022 The story of ‘Insects' gives children a lot to think about! For example, what would you do if you saw a beetle lying on its back, turned upside down and can’t get back on the track? How would you feel if you heard a butterfly weeping cause its wings had been pulled off and now... it can't fly. Would you help a grasshopper find its way outside if it was lost in your room? And if you saw a line of ants on their way home, would you step on them or leave them alone? ... Yep, lots to think and talk about! Incredible art by Kowanyama State School kids students SHOP @ www.auntywendysmob.com

18.01.2022 Today is National Sorry Day, marking 24 years since the 'Bringing Them Home' Report, documenting the experiences of the Stolen Generations and intergenerational trauma caused by Invasion and the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, communities and Country. This shocking trauma continues to impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. And still, today children continue to be removed from kin. Sorry means you don’t do it again! Credit: Wiradjuri Elder and artist, Aunty Fay Moseley's 'One Way Ticket to Hell' depicts the moment she was taken away from her parents and sent to Cootamundra Domestic Training Home for Aboriginal Girls when she was just 10 years old.

15.01.2022 Waijungbah Jarjums ~ a new midwifery program practiced at the Gold Coast University Hospital, Q'land. Thirty babies have taken part in a smoking ceremony, marking the first time the traditional event has been held for babies in the city. Waijungbah Jarjums offers continuity of care by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander midwife and child-health nurse from conception through to the child's 2nd birthday. There is also a fathers support group. Clinical midwife consultan...t for the Waijungbah Jarjums program, Cassandra Nest said, 'Babies born through the Indigenous midwifery program were more likely to have higher birth weights; are 6 times less likely to be born prematurely and 11 times less likely to have a low birth weight than Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies born from mothers who did not have access to such care. 'The program connects people to their culture, it provides them with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander advocate," Ms Nest said. 'We know that that improves engagement with services which then in turn improves their experience of the service. Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander women are less likely to experience racism and it also improves outcomes so it assists with closing the gap as well. Our babies were fatter, our mums were healthier, they were discharged home earlier so we've been able to make an immense difference.' Photo: Sarah Cumming

09.01.2022 It's ‘Reconciliation Week’ but shouldn't we be calling it, ‘Conciliation Week.' It's just a word but has a vastly different meaning. 'Conciliation' is 'the action of bringing peace and harmony; the action of ending strife'. 'Reconciliation', on the other hand means 'the re-establishment of friendly relations' and assumes there was an initial, positive relationship to begin with. In Australia's case, there never were 'friendly relations' due to Invasion and the devastating..., ongoing traumatic consequences of that. First Nations Peoples people have nothing, nothing to reconcile. It's non-Aboriginal Australia that need to do this work. Amplify Aboriginal voices; listen deeply; get more educated about the true history of Australia; make amends and stop the injustices that are continuing to be brought on the oldest, continuous living culture and Peoples in the world. This is whitefullas work to do...let's do it!

09.01.2022 MABO DAY On June 3, 1992, the High Court overturned the legal concept of ‘terra nullius’ which presumed that Australia belonged to no-one before Invasion and therefore stripped Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of their traditional rights to their lands and attempted to sever connections to cultures dating back 65,000 years. About Eddie Mabo: Eddie Koiki Sambo was born on June 29, 1936 on the Torres Strait island of Mer (also known as Murray Island). His moth...er died during childbirth and he was raised by his mother's brother, Benny Mabo, whose surname he adopted. Mabo settled in the Queensland city of Townsville in 1959 with his wife, Bonita. He was an activist for the Torres Strait Islander community and co-founded with Bonita, one of Australia's first black community schools. In 1974, while working as a gardener at James Cook University, Mabo learned that his island, Mer was Crown land owned by the Australian government and not by the Meriam people! Mabo gave a speech about Mer's land inheritance system at a Land Rights Conference in 1981, and a lawyer in the audience suggested there should be a test case to claim land rights in court. A year later, Mabo and four other Meriam people, Celuia Mapo Salee, James Rice, David Passi and Sam Passi took their legal claim for ownership of the lands of Mer to the High Court.and won!
