24.01.2022 Global warming and sea level rise sometimes seems like a lot of hype bandied about by the media and politicians. However, it has a different level of importance for scientists in a range of disciplines around the world. The Australian Curriculum emphasises that students should study sustainability and environment issues in HASS and Science subjects, from lower primary school up. This is not just because its fashionable at the moment, but rather because even casual reading of the science tells us that these are going to be some of the most critical issues faced by our children in years to come. 20.01.2022 Did you realise that QWERTY and typewriters were from that long ago? I certainly didn't. I did grow up in the late era of the typewriter (70s/80s), and I first learnt how to type on a mechanical typewriter. It was a model with a dual-coloured ribbon (black/red) which I used to good effect for a variety of things. I still own a "capture the flag" type card game called the Oasis game which I manufactured myself: I typed up the text for each of the cards (in the two different colours, as appropriate), cut them, and put contact on (no laminator). 18.01.2022 It can be fun! The OpenSTEM materials are ideally suited to online teaching. In these times of new challenges and requirements, there are a lot of technological possibilities. Schools and teachers are increasingly being asked to deliver material online to students. Our materials can assist with that process, especially for Humanities and Science subjects from Prep/Kindy/Foundation to Year 6. 17.01.2022 In 2008 a new group of human ancestors - the Denisovans, were defined on the basis of a single finger knuckle (phalanx) bone discovered in Denisova cave in the Altai mountains of Siberia. A molar tooth, found at Denisova cave earlier (in 2000) was determined to be of the same group. Since then extensive work in the region has identified that at the time (about 40,000 years ago), modern humans (ancestors of all people alive today), [ 735 more words ] https://openstem.com.au/2018/09/27/our-interwoven-ancestry

16.01.2022 Australia has been doing exceptionally well at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, held at the Gold Coast, Queensland. We can be very proud of our athletes, not only for their sporting prowess, but also because of their friendly demeanour and wonderful examples of the spirit of sportsmanship. Im sure we all felt proud when the Australian team waited 4 minutes on the track for the last runner, representing Lesotho, to finish the 10,000 m, after all the other athletes had left the track. 13.01.2022 Recently Amelia Earhart has been in the news once more, with publication of a paper by an American forensic anthropologist, Richard Jantz. Jantz has done an analysis of the measurements made of bones found in 1940 on the island of Nikumaroro Island in Kiribati. Unfortunately, the bones no longer survive, but they were analysed in 1941 by a doctor, D.W. Hoodless, from the Central Medical School in Fiji. 12.01.2022 The end of August and beginning of September is traditionally linked to the beginning of Spring in Australia, although the change in seasons is experienced in different ways in different parts of the country and was marked in locally appropriate ways by Aboriginal people. As a uniquely Australian celebration of Spring, National Wattle Day, celebrated on 1 September since 1910, celebrates the flowering of these uniquely Australian trees, as well as Australian identity. 09.01.2022 The modern Olympic games were started by Frenchman Henri de Baillot-Latour to promote international understanding. The first games of the modern era were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Australia has competed in all the Olympic games of the modern era, although our participation in the first one was almost by chance. Of course, the Olympics predated Federation by 5 years, so there was officially no "Australia" as a unified country - rather a collection of separate colonies of Britain. 08.01.2022 May is the birth month of Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman, better known as "Nellie Bly". Here at OpenSTEM, we have a great fondness for Nellie Bly - an intrepid 19th century journalist and explorer, who emulated Jules Vernes fictional character, Phileas Fogg, in racing around the world in less than 80 days in 1889/1890. Not only was she a bold individual with a keen eye for detail and a gifted wordsmith who could capture an audience with her tales of her exploits, but she was also a thoroughly investigative journalist with a sharp interest in social justice. 05.01.2022 Australia experienced several gold rushes during the 19th century. The most significant was in Victoria, changing the demographic and economic climate of the entire country, however, other states also experienced their own share of the excitement, which provided a much needed lift to the fortunes of colonies struggling to find identities after the end of the convict transportation era. This resource examines the gold rushes of the 19th century in different states of Australia and considers how these impacted on society in general, as well as the demography and economics of the continent. The resource aligns with Australian Curriculum History, Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business and HASS for years 5 and 6. https://openstem.com.au//pd/resource-australian-goldrushes

04.01.2022 Australia Day and its commemoration on 26 January, has long been a controversial topic. This year has seen calls once again for the date to be changed. Similar calls have been made for a long time.
