21.01.2022 Considering calling it quits with your Au Pair? Frustrated? Had enough? It could be that your Au Pair is always late, or doesnt pick up after herself or sits around waiting for you to tell her what she needs to do. Many times it is a combination of all these. Before you take drastic action, ensure you do these five things:... 1. COMMUNICATE - Talk honestly and openly with your Au Pair - what is it that is making you unhappy with her? 2. CALM DOWN - Give her the benefit of the doubt - she may really not know what to do, or may have blurred the lines between being at home and working - for example make on duty and off duty times clear. 3. GIVE IT TIME - Tell her what needs to change and how long she has to make it work and schedule a date for the next family meeting to discuss your progress. 4. TRAIN HER - Ensure youve spent enough time training her - remind yourself that this is all new to her and that she needs time to understand and work it out. Ask her if anything is unclear. 5. WRITE IT DOWN - Do you have a written schedule that she can follow so that she doesnt need your guidance to get on with the day? Have everything you want done in a day written down and have her tick it all off as she goes until it becomes second nature. Its easy to just give up. Everybody deserves a second chance - especially when they are so far from home without support.

How to choose a suitable picture Content The type and content of the picture matter a lot when it comes to creating an impression. For Au Pairs: It will be a good idea to add pictures with kids small siblings, cousins or even of your experience in a camp. Try to avoid pictures from parties, selfies and any photos that look sexy. Remember that Host Families are looking for a trustworthy and reliable person who can take care of their kids. While uploading the pictures, consider the right of publicity. If you would like to upload a picture of you playing with the neighbours kids, ask first the parents permission. Important Donts Dont upload pictures from google or social media that dont belong to you. This is both illegal and might create a suspicious impression. The main goal of the picture is to share a part of your personality. Dont insert your contact data or social media handles in your picture. Quality One of the main factors that influence picture quality is light. Natural light works always the best. If you are taking pictures inside the house, try to stand in a place where the light directly falls on your face. Another important factor that influences the quality of the picture is its resolution. You can manually choose it in your phone or camera settings. Ensure that your resolution is good enough to take a clear picture. Background Sometimes background can spoil even the nicest click of yours. Take care of people behind you, if there are any, and of the general background, so its not messy or suspicious.

Having them on board means your au pair is more likely to follow through on her commitment. Contact details are vital in an emergency but also if its not working out perhaps the parents may be able to offer advice and support. If youve explained your arrangement to the au pairs parents then theres less chance for misunderstanding. There have been cases where au pairs have for example crashed the family car and the family back home have been able to pay for the damage. The positives include your au pair is happier as she looks forward to the upcoming visit of a friend or family member your au pair is less likely to become homesick the cultural experience of having another person stay from her host country the children enjoy having another person to fuss over them (particularly the case if your au pairs parents come to stay) the goodwill built is invaluable - your au pair will appreciate your kindness and in most cases this translates to increased loyalty and commitment to the relationship. However, who do you classify as a friend? By friends we mean someone who is not just an acquaintance, but someone you know well. A person you have just met at a bar or on an outing is not a friend. Get to know people before inviting them into our home as they may not be as trustworthy as they appear. We have heard stories of Au pairs inviting friends to the house and then jewellery or other items have gone missing! Please make sure that you and your friends are quiet after the rest of the family has gone to bed (especially during the childrens bedtime) and that they are a person that you feel is trustworthy.

15.01.2022 Whats more important in an Au Pair excellent qualifications or the right personality? Whilst childcare qualifications can be a real bonus, its important to remember that the key difference between an Au Pair and a nanny is the live in aspect. The right attitude to the experience (although you are a host family - there is an actual job to be done) is very important, a can-do personality, a willingness to get to know the family even when they arent technically working and a glass half full personality are much more important than experience with children. Childcare skills can be taught, the right attitude can not.

13.01.2022 Do you struggle as au pair with the kids? Make sure your kids understand what behavior you expect from them with the Happy tickets. Earn 1 for every time they have a good attitude when it would be easy not to. (doing chores, etc.) Although treat seems to indicate food, I think I would let them draw out of a reward bucket and the treat could be staying up past bedtime or something else not always food related.

12.01.2022 Keeping track of hours worked - do you keep a timesheet/log of hours worked? Most families do. This is very effective for several reasons - first - your Au Pair is clear on off duty and on duty time and will keep busy looking after the kids or chores that need to be done - second if you have left over hours at the end of the week you can either carry them over or if your Au pair is doing a great job you can reward her with a few hours off - finally if you go over the hours you have the option of paying for those or carrying them over into the next week so that your Au Pair works less hour that week. If you dont keep track your Au Pair might be working too many hours leading to an unhappy Au Pair or you might be paying for hours you arent using. All good reasons to keep track.
