22.01.2022 Language Milestones: 12 months to 2 years Receptive Language (understanding): By the time your little one approaches two years old, they are likely following many instructions like, "come here", "sit down", "stop it. They will also start to pay attention to pictures in books and can point to many things when named including some body parts. They should recognise their own name and understands simple questions like, ''where is the ball?'' They will also likely be able to focu...s on one activity for ~5 minutes. Expressive Language: Between 12 and 18 months, your child will be able to say at least 5 words (including Mumma and Dada). They will be imitating words and noises (animal sounds, car noises) and mixing true words with jargon words. He/ she will also use words instead of pointing at things to make requests. When your child approaches 2 years, they will have at least 50 words in their developing vocabulary. They will also name pictures and put two words together (go Mumma, bye Dada, etc.). Social Language: Your child will consistently wave goodbye, repeat actions that make people laugh, play beside other children, pair gestures with words, and imitate adult behaviours during play. 19.01.2022 Below is some handy information on language milestones. This first post covers birth to 12 months. Babies grow, learn, and reach development milestones through relationships and play. While each child is unique and may develop these milestones at different rates, there is a "typical" range in which a child may reach each milestone. First Words: Children should have at least one word that they are using meaningfully by the time they are 1 year old (besides mama and dada).... We do not expect our little ones to be speaking clearly yet. For example, ba for ball is acceptable and what we call approximations. Gestures: Your child will begin to use a variety of gestures to aid in his/her communication. For example, your baby may point to something that he/she wants. Using gestures is an important prerequisite to developing expressive language skills. Receptive Language (understanding): By the time your child is one, he/she will begin to understand a lot of language that is heard. Although we expect them to use only one word at this age, their receptive vocabulary is much higher, and they generally recognise approximately 50 words. Social Language: By the time our little ones are one, they are vocalizing to gain attention, playing social games such as peek-a-boo, and waving hi and bye-bye. 02.01.2022 Speech sound development Speech sounds take time to fully develop. The easier ones (e.g. p, m, b, h), typically develop by 3 years, while trickier ones can take a little longer. Hopefully, this little table provides some clarity on when sounds should start to emerge. For more on speech and language development, stay tuned for my next post where I will provide information about language milestones.
