25.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for business - FY21 Planning Is there any point in planning or forecasting given there are so many unknowns about the year ahead? Two better questions to ask yourself: Does having no plan seem like a good idea? And when was the last time I knew everything that was going to happen in the year ahead? Don't over-complicate your plan! Use these topics as a guide:... 1. Sales funnel - where will your revenue come from? How are you going to regularly increase each stage of the funnel? 2. Product/service improvement - how will you improve your products and services to better suit the current and future needs of your clients? 3. People- who are your team (staff, contractors, suppliers) and how can you get the best from them? 4. Marketing Plan - how will you invest your marketing spend to maximise your return? Do you want to keep using the same lead generation sources or try new ones? 5. Financials - update your budget and cashflow to reflect the above four points. How will you manage lumpiness in cashflow and get through the quiet periods. What are you doing to get your business ready for the year? #business #planning #sme

19.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for small business Do you have a saleable business? From the commencement of your business, you should be preparing it for sale. Don’t wait until the day you want to retire or until after a significant change of circumstances. 1. Could your business survive if you weren’t working in it? It sounds strange but every business owners’ goal should be to make themselves redundant as an employee.... 2. Look and act like you are always ready to be purchased. This means you have a three-way cash flow and budget and run your business along product/service lines. 3. You must have a 12-month, three-year and five-year plan. There needs to be plenty of positives to your business; no one wants to buy a business that’s not going anywhere. Have targets and KPIs that make your team accountable in achieving the plans. 4. Ensure you have a management team/advisory board that can execute the business deliverables without you. The more effective this team works, the more valuable your business. 5. Finally, is your business: profitable? competitive? scalable? sustainable? #fast5 #smallbusiness #business #sme

18.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for small business Market your brand’s solutions and values not your product or service details Business owners and managers are (understandably) so proud of the advancements in their product or service that they want to brag about it. Problem is, most customers don’t know what some of those advancements mean for them. Airlines for example, never market that the latest software update to their new booking system; they still market the holiday you want to go on o...r the visit to loved ones sprinkling in their brand character and values. To establish your brand and improve your return on marketing, you need to be able to articulate exactly what your brand is and your solution offered. 1. Detail what the benefits of your product/ service are to your customers. Do you understand the value it provides? 2. Does your pricing reflect how you want to be positioned in the market and align with your key customer demographic? 3. Know who your direct competitors are and their products/services, weaknesses and strengths. 4. What are your values? Can you illustrate them without directly referring to each dot point? 5. Be comfortable with your sweet spot you can’t be everything to everyone within your market.

15.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for business - Zoom/Skype/Microsoft Teams Meetings Most businesses have had to adjust to a virtual way of working. Virtual meetings are only different to face-to-face meetings because they amplify poor behaviour. Here are a few tips that might help you to maximise your effectiveness: 1. Each discussion should have a purpose and achieve an outcome. Post-meeting circulate the agreed action items and responsibilities.... 2. Mute - unless you have something valuable to contribute. Be aware of and minimise your background noises if you are speaking. 3. Minimise distractions - you are still working - do not play on your phone (should be on silent), watch TV, play with your kids or pets during a meeting. Blur your background, create a virtual background or be prepared for people to snoop around your place. DO NOT ask questions or make comments about things you can see in people's background. 4. Be respectful of others' time - office extroverts are no doubt missing their audiences but meetings should be productive. 5. If you are having trouble with internet speed - unless video is a necessity turn it off it will improve call clarity. #fast5 #business #smallbusiness #zoom #skype #virtualmeetings

14.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for small business - Motivation Motivation after a holiday can be difficult. It's still quiet at the moment, so you aren't being inundated with external demands forcing you to get stuck in. Now is the perfect time to 'rediscover your why'; it can also double as the beginning of your updated marketing plan.... 1. Reflect on why you started your business - understand why you are turning up each day. What is your mission and business’ purpose? 2. Talk about your business - sometimes talking to a friend or a supportive customer or even an unsupportive customer can help you get the juices flowing. 3. Think about the impact you want to make - what do you care about and what is the long-term vision for the business. What does the brand stand for? What it is you actually do? 4. Sing it with me - I've got BILLS. They're multiplying. And I'm losing control. 'Cause the expenses You're supplying, Its terrifying 5. Do tasks you like doing - it will energise you and is easier than having to think about any of the above.

14.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for small business - Negative Feedback Every business owner wants to see only positive reviews and comments. The truth is, there’s no way around it: bad reviews happen. Negative reviews can be painful, both emotionally and financially. Here are 5 ways you can turn negative feedback into positive engagement.... 1. Listen carefully and distance your emotional self - the best way to receive negative feedback is to listen and actually hear what’s being said. Don’t take negative feedback as a personal attack and get defensive. 2. Ask questions - this can help the other individual communicate clearly whatever their core message is 3. Putting yourself in the shoes of a customer - you can’t always deliver solutions, but you can always deliver empathy. 4. Ask for time to collect your thoughts. Think carefully about what you plan to say and what impact it will have. 5. Apologise, resolve quickly & fix the process - even if you didn’t do whatever made them upset, you can still genuinely be apologetic for the way your customer feels. Get to the bottom of why the mistake occurred, without blaming anyone; focus on fixing the process so that it doesn’t happen again.

12.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for small business Sleep As a business owner, it might be tough to hear but you sleeping more could make your business worth more (there is a limit to this). Here are just a few key areas that can be negatively impacted by sleep deprivation: 1. Memory - getting more sleep aids memory performance. Memory is critical for organisational successremembering to turn up to meetings, recalling critical sales figures, or meeting a deadline.... 2. Decision-making - even a single night of total sleep deprivation can have dramatic effects on the capacity to make good decisions. Sleep-deprived people are more likely to be side-lined by irrelevant trivia, lose track of what has been said, and become more distrustful. 3. Creativity - tired minds generate tired ideas. Both quantity and quality of sleep are important for all aspects of the creative process. 4. Health - small changes in sleep duration or efficiency, even over just a few nights, can lead to health-related changes such as increased blood pressure, appetite regulation imbalances, and susceptibility to infection. 5. Mood - feeling irritable, more stressed and wanting to be left alone does not help your customers.

11.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for small business - Restart your year Hard to believe the Australia Day long weekend is already upon us. The obvious temptation is spend the next three days eating your weight in sausages, consuming a few drinks and splashing in the pool or waves. But a three day weekend also gives business owners a great chance to have a 25 minute meeting with themselves (5 mins on each topic) and restart their 2020. Here is a proposed agenda (write down action items for each ...topic): 1. Sales - where is your revenue going to come from and how are you going to win it? 2. Product/service improvement - how can you improve your products and services to make customers blown away? 3. People - (employees, contractors, suppliers) how can you get the best out of them? 4. Marketing - how are you investing your marketing spend to maximise your return? 5. Financials - update your budget and cashflow to reflect the above four points. #fast5 #smallbusiness #epic2020 #results

10.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for business - Reducing internal fraud You might think it could never happen to you but it most likely will. It might not be on a grand scale and will likely be vigorously justified/denied by the perpetrator but it still is a betrayal and a crime. Here are a few tips to help: 1. Increase the perception of detection - make sure employees are aware that dishonest acts will be punished. Fraud is easier to rationalise when employees believe their wrongful acts will go... undetected and unprosecuted. 2. Segregate duties - don’t leave an employee in a position to correct their own work. If people know that their work is being watched they are less likely to commit fraud. 3. Set the tone at the top - a written ethics policy is an excellent method by which management can objectively communicate its philosophy toward fraud. You will also need to walk the talk. 4. Require time away - enforce mandatory vacations. An employee who comes in early and stays late or never takes a vacation has the perfect opportunity to conceal their wrongdoing. 5. Surprise audits - should be part of your pro-active fraud policy. All too many notable fraudsters knew that the auditors were coming, allowing them time to alter or destroy evidence of their wrongdoing. #fast5 #smallbusiness #business

10.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for small business Get paid faster 1. Invoice promptly - invoice immediately upon delivery of your goods or services to the customer or as soon as reasonably possible. It sounds obvious but a lot of businesses don’t do it. 2. Issue e-invoices - Xero has found that businesses using online payment services are paid 27 per cent faster than those using offline invoices.... 3. Clearly state payment terms and payment options - make sure your invoices state specific payment terms, such as "Payable within 14 days" or "Due Date of xx/xx. Offer multiple ways to pay such as bank details, credit card, BPAY etc. 4. Take partial payment in advance and get written confirmation of additional services. Higher-ticket items and services should be asking for a deposit or retainer up front; no reasonable customer should be offended by such a request. 5. Establish a follow-up procedure for customers who miss payments. The more quickly you follow up on a missed payment, the better your chance of getting paid. Don’t muck around courtesy phone call, email (stating the bill is overdue and requesting the customer's immediate action) then refer to a collection agency or engage a solicitor to pursue the funds.

05.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for business - Internal Fraud - how to manage the fall out Whether it’s embezzlement, fraud, or theft of intellectual/physical property, most businesses will experience employee theft. Here are some tips to deal with it: 1. Prepare - make sure that your employee handbook outlines how the business will respond to fraud complaints.... 2. Investigate - workplace fraud is difficult to investigate for a number of reasons. Make sure that you do so as discreetly and confidentially as possible. Determine if you want to investigate the crime in-house or if you want to hire a third party. 3. Discuss - once you’ve determined that there’s been a crime, call the employee into your office to have a conversation. Get right to the point show them the evidence that you’ve collected. It’s likely to be uncomfortable but it’s necessary. 4. Terminate - in the vast majority of situations, you will need to terminate employment. You should discuss with legal counsel or fraud experts about whether to press charges. 5. Communicate - tell your employees about the situation to quell any office gossip. However, you can only give them the broad outline of what has transpired. Sadly, you will have to deal with workplace fraud. Take deliberate steps, to protect your business. #fast5

04.01.2022 Fast 5 tips for small business Who is your customer? A lot of money is wasted every year on advertising and marketing. One of the best ways to help this is to know who exactly your customer is. Use the following filters to help you find your target market. 1. What problem do you solve who could have that problem?... 2. What could their demographic attributes (age, gender, location, income) look like? 3. What could their psychographic attributes (attitudes, beliefs, values) look like? 4. What could be motivating someone to become a customer? Is there a need/want/status/look/experience associated with your product or service that someone -could be desiring? Who would want that? 5. If you are still stuck, think about who you are not targeting and who you do not wish to work with.
