21.01.2022 Hope Kuchel belongs to the Barkindji nation located in western NSW along the Darling River. She is an alumna of Aurora's pilot High School Program and Aurora Internship Program, has graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Criminology and Sociology and is now employed as a mentor for the NSW High School Program cohort. We spoke to Hope about the significance of NAIDOC Week to her, after she was recently accepted for this year’s Study Tour... through the Aurora International Scholarships Program. What does NAIDOC Week mean to you? A time to come together as a community and celebrate our resilience, our families and our strengths as First Nations people. It is a way for us to connect to culture but also for non-Indigenous Australians to join us in a safe way to learn, listen and grow. Why is it important that younger generations continue to learn about and celebrate NAIDOC week? It is crucial they take part in this week, continue to listen to the stories shared and feel pride in their history. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek

This is part of a famous protest chant that has been called out over many decades through streets and halls in cities and towns across Australia with calls for truth and justice. This theme also recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years and are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This week we will share with you some insights from some of Aurora's very own participants who will talk about what NAIDOC week means to them and why the theme of Always Was, Always Will Be is an important conversation to have in 2020.

09.01.2022 We were excited to hold our first 2020 face to face high school camp with our WA students recently. Currently in NSW and WA, our High School Program provides over 200 hours of wrap-around support each year to Indigenous high school students which also includes 20 days of residential academic camps that are delivered by specialist Indigenous staff, mentors and Elders. During the camp the Year 10 students spent time building a Mia-Mia with Uncle Noel Nannup. Sadly, after all o...f their hard work creating the masterpiece, heavy rains knocked it down! The artwork shown was also created by our very talented Year 8 and 9 students. We’re looking forward to many more face to face camps in the future and continuing to strengthen cultural identity and creating a community of students who support each other through school, university and into their careers.
