11.01.2022 Grazing the road side is one way of getting the cows a feed due to drought conditions. We have had 91mls over the last week, all dirzzle no runoff, just need a little bit of sun. Cows made it home just in time so I didn't get wet. I am that age were I don't like working if it's to wet, hot, cold, humid, windy or the fish are biting.
08.01.2022 The good news is there is hope, I woke this morning to a grey sky and a few drops but that's all. The area is drought declared, being on the coast that means a green drought where the grass doesn't quite die but just hangs in there with an ever so slight green tinge. I need to jump in the tractor and start slashing the paddocks to eradicate the fine crop of Fire Weed that has taken hold, fire weed is detrimental to the health of cattle, but it gives the paddock a nice green a...nd yellow guise. The paddocks are going to look very bare by the time I finish. Since the beginning of the year I’ve spent near $31,000 on buying feed for the cows, the bulk of that with Manildra Group at Bomaderry NSW. Today I spoke with one of their representatives to discuss the possibility of them donating one free load or possible reducing the price, his answer was I quote There is No Way in Hell that’s Going to Happen, we already have to many creditors. To say the least, I was a bit disappointed with Manildra’s attitude. Once the drought breaks (and it will) and new crops are harvested I resolve to buy only hay from farmers, that way my money will be helping someone on the land rather than a faceless middle man.
06.01.2022 Potential Entry in the Cutest Calf of the Year Award And the smallest calf of the year award (so far) goes to Aurora Daphne P37 weighing in at 26 kg at just 1 hour old. Waiting for her mum to give the kiss (lick) of life all over before I unceremoniously slipped her into the chaff bag for the weigh-in, you must be patient and wait for them to be dry as they can be very slippery suckers covered in goo if you’re too quick off the mark.
04.01.2022 Another semi load of hay has arrived, overnight rain, full bellies and a soft bed makes for calf contentment.
03.01.2022 I placed an add in the classified wanted section for grass clipping to feed cows and this is the flow on
