15.01.2022 This painting of the old Aurukun Mission House was gifted to the Mayor by a relative of the artist, Sister Alison Cameron. Her niece Bev Brown wanted the painting to return to Aurukun as Sister Cameron’s heart belonged with the Aurukun people and her ashes were scatted over Aurukun from a plane. The house was built in the early 1900s as the home of the Mission Superintendent. It became the first administration office of Aurukun Shire when the Council was formed in 1978. The bank and post office also operated from the premises which burnt to the ground in 1992. The Aurukun Supermarket now stands on the site.

14.01.2022 Acting Sergeant Tamara White spent her recent days off at Amban Beach helping 14 young Aurukun people develop discipline, resilience and teamwork with the assistance of a group of Kapani war veterans. Tamara created a unique game of tug-of-war fought out between a long abandoned pontoon washed up on traditional lands and the eager youths who were keen to remove marine debris to make their homelands a better place. Under her direction, the youths worked together to reduce thei...r fear of doing something that might have seemed impossible at first and came away with a sense of achievement and pride in the freshly restored beach. Tamara is passionate about building positive relationships between communities and agencies and motivating young people to push themselves outside their comfort zones. For many young people in community, shame, anxiety and fear of doing something different has been a factor in inhibiting their potential. These young people can fall into anti-social behaviours, and their fear of change can unfortunately hold them into a cycle of offending, she said. See more
