25.01.2022 wishing all our Arts and Health and Creative Ageing friends all good things in the year ahead @MargretMeagher

25.01.2022 This tribute to frontline medical workers was too brilliant not to share. The mural by Melbourne's Murals and Interior Design is at Blackrock. Thank you to all those people helping to keep us safe and our communities going. 23.01.2022 Meet artist Siris Hill. Art has transformed his life dealing with trauma and mental illness. He says "When I finally found art I felt empowered, it took away everything negative that I was thinking and feeling. Its given me a voice and I want to share that for and with others." https://www.bbc.com//ex-norwich-rough-sleeper-exhibits-anx #artshealth #artsandhealth #mentalhealth #youthmentalhealth #artsonprescription #artsinhealth #creative #inspire #shareart #communityarts

23.01.2022 ABC interview with Melbourne GP and author Melanie Cheng (Australia Day novel) on how writing creates happier doctors and raises their empathy for patients. https://www.abc.net.au//doctors-creative-writing/11172788 "I found this Creative Doctors network They were doctors that were doing writing, photography, painting, performance ...," she explains. ... Used to seeing tired, grumpy, overworked doctors in hospital wards and GP clinics, she said,"What struck me when I went to see this Creative Doctors network was that they really seemed happy and it was a bit of a light-bulb moment." Hilton Koppe, a GP with almost three decades practice and involvement in training medical professionals, had his own light-bulb moment 16 years ago: he uses writing exercises in his sessions to replenish his trainees "wells", or stores, of empathy. #artshealth #artsandhealth #artsinhealth #mentalhealth #GP #creative #artsonprescription #creativewriting #creativedoctors #hospitals #medicalstudents #doctors #inspire #empathy #australianhospitals #MelanieCheng #author #hiltonkoppe #patientperspective #narrativemedicine #listeningtopatients #patientsaspeople #patientsfirst #patientexperience #agedcare #overworkeddoctors #ABC

20.01.2022 Even the worst of times bring inspiration. Public art both expresses and prompts emotions and wellbeing. 12.01.2022 Congratulations to Rebecca Johnson on her appointment as chief scientist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC! The The Sydney ...Morning Herald labelled it "the biggest and best gig in the world of natural history". This is a real good news story for Australia and wonderful recognition for Rebecca who has done so much for koala conservation. Currently chief scientist at the Australian Museum, Rebeccas work included identifying Port Macquaries koalas as some of the healthiest and least inbred populations. Her findings were incorporated into the 2018 NSW Koala Strategy - the biggest commitment by any state government to secure koalas in the wild. She also sequenced the koala genome, revealing that koalas had 26,000 genes (humans have 20-25,000) and found they had more detoxification genes than other species, which has helped treatment of chlamydia - a leading koala killer, along with habitat loss and urbanisation. Rebecca remains hopeful that despite the reported loss of up to 2000 koalas in the recent bushfires, our koalas can be saved. Thank you and best wishes from Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail, Rebecca. .............................................................. 10.01.2022 Australian Centre for Arts and Health is delighted to be part of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra Art and Dementia Symposium tomorrow Tuesday, September 24 from 5-8pm. The symposium, open to the public, and attended by ACAH director Margret Meagher and creative ageing practitioner Lisa Hort - pictured here with NGA program producer Adriane Boag at last years ACAH conference - will highlight national and international perspectives in the field and celebrate the i...mpact and legacy of the NGAs program. This includes growth of the field in Japan by Arts Alive founder Yoko Hayashi and new research on bio markers for mood and agitation by University of Canberra PhD Candidate Nathan DCahuna. Adriane was one of the keynote speakers at the first ACAH conference in Port Macquarie in 2009 and it was from that event that the NGA developed its outreach art and dementia program, commencing with the Glasshouse Port Macquarie in 2010, so this is a real milestone. Weve included a lovely flashback to one of Adrianes early session at the gallery. The event is free, but you need to book at https://tickets.nga.gov.au//Enta/EventSeatBlockPrices.aspx The event will be live-streamed via the NGA Facebook, so dont miss out. .............................................. 06.01.2022 Hello Koalas is thrilled to be the Gold Winner for Cultural Tourism at the 2019 NSW Tourism Awards just announced! Sadly, project director Margret Meagher could...nt be at the awards night due to the fire threat at her home and business at Ellenborough in Greater Port Macquarie. However, she shared a moment from the fires that she said exemplified the amazing level of commitment of the Hello Koalas family. When local Hello Koalas fibreglass manufacturer John Belfield and his wife were forced to evacuate their property at Johns River, they did not know what they would be returning to ... or if their house would be intact. Facing the same plight, Margret asked him how he prioritised what to take in his trailer in the face of such danger and destruction. He replied: I took the Hello Koalas sculpture mould because it was the most precious possession in my care and the one that would be the hardest to replace! What an amazing man - thank you, John! Margret said the win was due to many such passionate people, including Hello Koalas inspired artists, valued sponsors and partners, steadfast supporters and suppliers and rapidly growing band of admirers and friends. She also paid tribute to Janette Hyde, who won the Dean Gorddard Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual to NSW - Congratulations Janette! Janette is President of the Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Association, Vice President of the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce, Board Member of Port Macquarie Panthers and a supporter of a number of community-based organisations including Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail. (She is pictured with Margret when Hello Koalas took out the 2019 NSW Chamber Regional Business Award for Excellence in Innovation.) Our Hello Koalas are discovered on the original Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail in Greater Port Macquarie, the annual Hello Koalas Festival in June, in travelling exhibitions such as currently at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney (until 30 November), and across Australia and the world through traditional and social media - all spreading awareness of the importance of protecting our iconic koalas and our environment in a fun and entertaining way. ............................................................ 06.01.2022 "We must break down stereotypes, break down mental constructs, limitations, categories, borders - or ultimately the arts will suffer. Thats the inspiration for Wild Dreamer Productions creative director, Aarti Bajaj, originally from India, now Gold Coast-based, whose production Meera is on at ASB Waterfront Theatre in Auckland from May 31-June 2. The arts ability to break down barriers of all descriptions age, gender, race, nationality, language, ability, health, behav...iour, socio-economics and profession is something continuously addressed at ACAH conferences. Aarti has been selected to compete for Australia at the World Championship of Performing Arts in California in July. She was selected from 75,000 applications across 50 countries. In Meera, she has created a new concept and genre, mixing professional and amateur talents from diverse backgrounds, in what has been described as a truly unique cultural melting pot where dance styles like jazz, pole, Indian, ballet, contemporary and aerial mix with the latest technology and intelligent cinematography. Its a love story which she says just happens to come from India but the story, like the arts is bigger than where people come from. "When I see humans, I see humanity, and when I see arts, I just see artists ...I choose not to be categorised or labelled as "this" or "that" because of my colour or ethnicity ...I choose the word "artist" thats it ... art has so much to offer ...we cant limit it inside the boxes of colour, creed, ethnicity, or gender."
