23.01.2022 Championship Spotlight- Octopus and Rock Lobster by Geoff Mantle Not all of our taxidermy entries use an animal's skin. Geoff's Octopus is an excellent example of 'Reproduction' taxidermy. This category is for taxidermy created by moulding and casting a real animal, an increasingly popular technique often used for fish and reptiles. The soft body of an octopus makes for a particularly difficult subject, but Geoff's hard work paid off. 22.01.2022 AusAWA regularly hosts seminars with highly skilled taxidermists to provide educational opportunities to the Australian taxidermy community. In 2017 we had the pleasure of hosting Terry Weick, a world-renowned master taxidermist from Michigan, USA. Among his many achievements, Terry was awarded a 'Best in World' medal at the World Taxidermy Championships in 2011 Terry's seminar focused on finishing and repair work, with an emphasis that quality finishing work relies on qualit...y mounting procedures. He showed us a wide range of tips and techniques including stitch choices, hide preparation, eye setting, antler repair, disguising missing hair, creating bird eye-rings, texture stamps, restoring colour with various media, epoxy repairs, reference casts and habitat creation. These opportunities to learn in person with world-class taxidermy artists has proved invaluable to our members, never failing to greatly improve our overall standard of work. (Unfortunately due to Covid-19 our seminar and championship planning has been suspended temporarily)
