02.01.2022 THAILAND OPEN RECAP (Part 1) - By Gronya Somerville On the 4th of January I set off for my first international flight, in nearly a year, to Bangkok, Thaila...nd. Considering in 2019 we had caught over 25 flights, it was a surreal experience to be flying again after so long - an experience only made weirder by the deserted airports with masked staff and closed shops. I was slightly uneasy flying during a pandemic unsure of the risk I would be in in catching COVID-19 and the uncertainty of travel at this time. After multiple form checks including a negative covid test certificate, evidence of covid travel insurance and a certificate of entry into thailand, I boarded my flight from Melbourne to Singapore. One of the benefits of flying during the pandemic is that you are pretty much guaranteed a row to yourself, and usually an empty row in front or behind also. After a long transit in Singapore where I met up with Setyana, my doubles partner coming from Sydney, we landed in Bangkok along with some other Singapore players and BWF officials. What awaited us in Bangkok were lots of military personnel and airport staff in high level PPE, hundreds of socially distanced chairs for us to sit on and a quick form check process to get us through customs. We grabbed our luggage and were on to a bus with police escort to our hotel in no time. At the hotel we had our second of 12 covid tests and had to self-isolate in our room until a negative result came back, from which we could then commence training. For 3 weeks this would be the routine of doing everything in our room aside from allotted training times, with food being left at our door for each meal. The first week of training was a blessing as it was our only chance to leave the room for 1hr 15mins of gym and on court each day as well as a chance for us to train as a doubles pair after being in different states the whole year and not training together. Continued in part 2...
