25.01.2022 Today's piece of great advice from #ABCN mentors will particularly with students forced to learn remotely. Alkira, a uni student and intern at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, had to do her HSC online because she was living in a foreign country. 'I know it's a hard experience, it's tough,' she says. 24.01.2022 #ABCN turns 15 this month and today were celebrating one of our founding member companies, MinterEllison. A long-time champion of gender equity, the law firm piloted our first Focus program in 2012. Designed to nurture leadership ambition and skills in Year 11 girls, the idea came from the firms female lawyers who wanted to mentor but didnt have a lot of time. The initiative was supported by former MinterEllison champion Anton Hermann, who was a huge advocate of ABCN and i...s sorely missed. Focus has since evolved into one of our most popular programs. This year, the digital version of Focus is proving to be as popular and effective as the face-to-face version. Survey results from digital programs run between March and August show that 92% of the participating girls report I see myself as a leader after a Focus program, versus 47% prior. MinterEllison has also been a fantastic supporter of our ABCN Foundation Accelerate program, funding five female scholarships since 2013. Thank you to all MinterEllison mentors and champions for helping to shift the dial on gender equity! #ABCN15Years #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork

24.01.2022 There were smiles all round at this ABCN Future Thinkers pilot program with Year 10 Cabramatta High School students, delivered digitally last Friday. Students completed activities online with their Macquarie Group mentors, who joined in via Zoom. You'll also spot Peta Melki, ABCN's NSW State Manager, with the Cabramatta HS Leadership Team. Cabramatta HS has been an ABCN partner school since our inception in 2005, and Principal Beth Godwin is a longtime participant in our Part...ners in Learning program. #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork
24.01.2022 'Absolutely amazing! Definitely what I have needed for so long, especially now during these hard times with the COVID-19 pandemic.' That's the feedback we got from a Victorian student who participated in our first ever digital Focus program involving students learning at home. 'I praise all efforts put in by every individual who has made this program possible,' the Lyndale Secondary College student went on. 'I cannot thank you all enough.' Fantastic feedback from mentors, t...oo: 100% said they valued the opportunity to participate and feel more inspired to help others more often. We are so proud to have launched this important pilot with Korn Ferry. Thank you to all mentors for helping students at home feel connected to the outside world. And special thanks to our amazing Victorian program manager Louise Manka for orchestrating this challenging pilot program. #ABCN #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork
23.01.2022 Ready. Set. Go! Our first face-to-face mentoring program during the #COVID19aus pandemic took flight - safely - this week in lucky South Australia. Year 8 students from Woodville High School made their way to PwC's offices, where we held an Innovate program, designed to nurture an interest in STEM subjects. Naturally, mentors and students kept their distance from each other and there was plenty of hand sanitiser to go around. It was great to see everyone working together on c...reating parachutes - experimenting, modifying, innovating! #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork #ABCN
22.01.2022 During #NAIDOC week, we're excited to be running two tailored GOALS programs supporting First Nations students in regional NSW. A big thank you to mentors from Stockland and Ashurst who are working online with students from Northlakes High School (pictured) on the Central Coast, and to mentors from PwC and NBN Australia who are working with students at Mount Austin High School in central NSW. One teacher from Mount Austin, when thanking the mentors, talked about the ripple ef...fect the program would have with the kids and the whole community. These inaugural programs, launched in partnership with the NSW Department of Education, are part of our efforts to deepen our engagement with Indigenous students. #NAIDOC2020 #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #volunteering #mentoring #futureofwork
22.01.2022 Tomorrow #ABCN turns 15, and today were celebrating one of our founding member companies, IAG, whose CEO in 2005 was instrumental in establishing the network. 22.01.2022 Today is #WearItPurple Day, created to celebrate and empower LGBTIQ+ youth around the world. 75% of young LGBTIQ+ people experience bullying because of their identity. We have the power to change this, and ensure a safer, more inclusive future for everyone. That starts with awareness and education within our schools and workplaces. #ABCN is proud to support young LGBTIQ+ people across Australia. Did you know that our Foundation has a dedicated LGBTIQ+ scholarship, thanks to t...he Citi Australia Pride Network? This three-year scholarship provides an LGBTIQ+ student with mentorship and financial support during their final two years of high school and first year of university. It really does change lives. If you would like to donate to our LGBTIQ+ scholarship, you can do so here: https://abcnfundraising.raisely.com/mark-bryce Otherwise, show your support with your finest purple outfits and video backgrounds like some of our ABCN team below
21.01.2022 This month ABCN turns 15, and today were celebrating one of our founding member companies, UBS. Some of their volunteer mentors recently participated online in one of our digital Focus programs held at Birrong Girls High School. It was fun and engaging, one student said afterwards. It was great to meet our mentors and receive advice on how to become great leaders. Feedback from mentors was that it was rewarding to help others and also to learn from them. Its so great ...to step away from my day-to-day role now and then and bring life more in perspective, one mentor said. Sign up, another urged. You not only act as a positive role model for the future generation but also learn so much about yourself and develop strong leadership/mentoring skills. #ABCN15years #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork
20.01.2022 What a lovely video from Brisbane Bayside State College students thanking Optus and #ABCN for the SIM cards they received containing donated data. Watch the students describe how it made a difference to their lives. Hundreds of students at our partner schools across the country received SIM cards through the Optus #DonateYourData program, supported by several charities including ABCN. The initiative was a crucial part of our emergency response to #COVID19aus which forced many... students to learn remotely, exposing the huge #DigitalDivide between those who could easily access the internet and those at risk of falling behind. #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork

20.01.2022 'In just one session I have come out learning so much. I'm believing in myself more, confident and have strategies to put into my everyday life.' That's the great feedback we got from a student after completing a digital Focus program, which is all about leadership skills for Year 11 girls. Our latest digital Focus program was held at Kogarah High School in Sydney last week, where ABCN program manager Maree Drury (pictured) facilitated at the school while Stockland mentors Ri...o Shad and Margaret Fong joined online. During this time when different schools and states are abiding by different COVID safety rules, we are being flexible with our programs, blending online platforms and F2F delivery to keep students and mentors safely connected. #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork
19.01.2022 Thank you to TAL Australia mentors for participating in last week's fully digital delivery of our Focus program. We usually have an #ABCN representative at the school but, due to COVID concerns, some schools prefer to limit visitors on site. 'No problem!' was the response of ABCN program manager Becky Robertson, who happily facilitated from her home office. That change to delivery format didn't change the outcome: a whopping 100% of the girls from Greystanes High School - Official reported that they now see themselves as a leader, up from 29% before the program started. Focus builds leadership skills in Year 11 girls, giving them the confidence and tools to become more than what they imagined possible.

18.01.2022 Our WA team celebrated their first program of 2021 last Thursday with an Empower session with Microsoft at Swan View Senior High School. 'The mentors helped us realise that being resilient and feeling empowered allows us all to grow and help others and individuals. We all start from somewhere and our journeys are all special,' one student told us. Empower is a unique digital #ABCN program that builds students' confidence, skills and mindsets for the rapidly changing world of ...work - skills that are more valuable than ever in the current climate. 94% of Empower students in 2020 said they now understand strategies to help build resilience and mental wellbeing, compared with 55% before the program. #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork

17.01.2022 We at ABCN feel gutted by the news that all Victorian students must return to another six weeks of remote learning. These lockdowns expose the deep gap in equity between advantaged and disadvantaged schools - Australia has one of the biggest gulfs in the developed world. We're working with many schools that are doing a fantastic job supporting their students despite the challenges noted in a recent research paper from the Gonski Institute for Education: 'Those attending a wel...l-resourced, fee-paying school swiftly moved to online learning, but many public students were left floundering as their schools did not have the resources or personnel to quickly prepare for such an event.' A survey commissioned by the Institute found that nine out of 10 Australians endorse educational equity across the nation, agreeing that a student's background should not be an obstacle to academic success. The report calls on business to advocate for high quality education in their communities. #education #futureofwork

15.01.2022 'After I finish school I was thinking of a future in finance or real estate and doing this program made me want to keep fighting for that future.' What a great way to end another #ABCN GOALS program with students from Thornlie Senior High School in WA and mentors from Commonwealth Bank and PwC Australia. Everyone made the most of the face-to-face environment, pitching in to build spaghetti towers in teams. In the words of one mentor, it was a 'great experience working with yo...ung children from different backgrounds, understanding their story, mentoring them and also learning from them.' #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork

14.01.2022 We love this story from Kingswood High School Official about the difference a Future Thinkers program with American Express Australia last year made to their school over the following months. The students and mentors brainstormed ideas for improvements, including a clean, quiet library (which has also become a great space for delivering our new digital programs). Other improvements include canteen rewards for students who do good deeds, a new grassed area, more seating and ad...ditional garbage bins. Thank you to our American Express mentors who helped students workshop all these great ideas by practising design thinking principles. #mentoring #volunteering #futureofwork
13.01.2022 This month ABCN turns 15, and today we're celebrating one of our founding member companies, KPMG Australia. We love hearing stories of #ABCN alumni who end up working for one of our member companies. Here's KPMG's Joshua, who told us: 'Growing up in a low socio-economic status community, you think the world wants to keep you out, that it's us against them. 11.01.2022 Do you know what it means to 'fail forward'? In this video, Nicki Kumar from Energy Australia describes how she froze on stage during an important speech in Hong Kong. Yes, she was embarrassed - but she failed forward, and saw her failure as a valuable lesson for the future. Nicki learnt from her experience that self-confidence (and preparation!) goes a long way in nailing a big speech or presentation, a lesson that she'll never forget. 05.01.2022 #ABCN turns 15 this month and today we're celebrating one of our founding member companies, MinterEllison. A long-time champion of gender equity, the law firm piloted our first Focus program in 2012. Designed to nurture leadership ambition and skills in Year 11 girls, the idea came from the firm's female lawyers who wanted to mentor but didn't have a lot of time. The initiative was supported by former MinterEllison champion Anton Hermann, who was a huge advocate of ABCN and i...s sorely missed. Focus has since evolved into one of our most popular programs. This year, the digital version of Focus is proving to be as popular and effective as the face-to-face version. Survey results from digital programs run between March and August show that 92% of the participating girls report 'I see myself as a leader' after a Focus program, versus 47% prior. MinterEllison has also been a fantastic supporter of our ABCN Foundation Accelerate program, funding five female scholarships since 2013.
