24.01.2022 Fire-breathing lions? On more than one occasion, Archbishop Makarios has characterised Christians as lions who breathe fire. Of course, he was quoting St John Chrysostom’s forty-sixth homily on the Gospel of St John and describing what happens to Christians after the Eucharist Therefore, Christ has also done this, leading us into a greater friendship, and demonstrating his longing for us: He has granted to those who desire him not only to see him, but even to touch, and to ...eat, and to fix their teeth on his flesh, and to embrace him, and to satisfy all their longing. Let us then return from that table like lions breathing fire, having become people who inspire fear in the devil, and having in mind our head (Christ), and the love which he has shown us. , , , , , , , . , , , , .

20.01.2022 Christos Anesti, Christ is Risen. In 2019, I had wanted to give a special gift to my mother for Mother's Day. We went to the stores and I bought two beautiful ...canaries for her that she picked out. It was great, they were full of life, sounds and unique birdie personality. Unfortunately, within six (6) months they stopped chirping for the most part. Eventually, we got to the stage where one of them even started sitting mostly, rather than standing upright on his legs. Basically, these new birds started becoming like retiree birds!!! There had been a time once before that by playing YouTube canary singing clips it would get them singing, alas that too became a thing of the past. I have even tried in my desperation to play every type of genre music, alas yet again to no avail. They had no health issues, I made sure of that. We became resigned to the fact that my household had become the birdie retirement house!!! Brothers and sisters, the Lord has a way of showing His presence. The minute one puts on Orthodox Christian chanting, often the chanting by the Australian Byzantine Choir (ABC), these creatures of God's creation come to life they are flying and chirping away like no tomorrow. When the chanting stops, not long after the birds stop. One might say, it is simply the birds trying to please their owner by singing when they do. Remember, though, they only do this to Orthodox chanting. They do not say as an insult someone has a 'bird brain' for nothing a canary is not capable of such intelligent selective thinking! For we see in this example, proven once again earlier today, that everything in God's creation is designed to give Him glory. We are built and made to live by His design! The message of this story is, we need to open up our hearts like the animals of His creation and give Him glory. For many, life events make us conditioned to a certain way of thinking and feeling, often it is to either not believe or if we do believe, to make worship as a Sunday only pursuit. We are here to live our best lives in glory to Him every day to open our hearts we need to first be receptive like the birds and other animals. We are made to love and feel love, the question is whether we know proper and complete love. True love is by following design and when we express and manifest this to God, only then we are able to truly love one another. I wish I could show you a video of my birds in action, however my phone that I would ordinarily record on plays the chanting. However, I have something even better, here is a link to the ABC chanting: https://bit.ly/2KXCwJD We celebrate Mother's Day again next week let us not allow this day to come to pass without celebrating it together with our mother's to the glory of God. To those who have lost their mum's, let us still pray with and for them, praising God for the love and bond they share to us. 2020 has been a year of restrictions and some might be feeling that it has been a complete waste. God is teaching us something now, let us use this time in stillness, to discover how to open up our hearts and minds to give glory to the above. Ikos 12 from an Akathist of Praise of God's Creation: "How poor is my praise before you! I have not heard the song of the Cherubim, a joy reserved to the souls on high, but I know the praises nature sings to you. In winter, I see how in the moonlit silence the whole earth offers you prayer, wrapped in its white mantle of snow, sparkling like diamonds. I see the rising sun rejoice in you, and I hear the chorus of birds raise a hymn of glory. I hear the forest mysteriously rustling in your honour, the winds sing of your, the waters murmur and the processions of stars proclaim you as they move in harmony for ever in the depths of infinite space. What is my poor worship? All nature obeys you, I do not; yet while I live, I see your love. I long to thank you, pray to you and call upon your Name. "Glory to you, who has shown us the light, Glory to you, who loved us with a deep unfathomable and divine love, Glory to you, who blesses us with the light, with a host of angels and saints, Glory to you, Father most holy, revealing us your kingdom in your commandments, Glory to you, Holy Spirit, life-giving Sun of the world to come, Glory to you for all things, divine and most merciful Trinity, Glory to you, O God, from age to age." - Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America On Monday, we will release an instructional video with Fr Romanos Stergiou explaining Orthodox Byzantine chant. Photos: > My birds on a joyful utopia after their singalong to the chanting. > Virgin-Mary with Christ-child, 'Broader than the Heavens'. > The Australian Byzantine Choir who have some of the most amazing voices. > My last image taken departing Mount Athos in January, surrounded by nature (there had been birds flying everywhere not captured much in the photo but in videos). I only really experienced the true feeling of stillness when I spent time here. > An image of retiree birds to those who can't visualise it!

06.01.2022 It has been one year since the arrival of our beloved Archbishop Makarios of Australia, who in this short time since his arrival has embraced the Orthdodox community with an abundance of love and vision for the progression of our Church Australia wide. The Australian Byzantine Choir expresses their gratitude to his Eminence and looks forward to supporting him and our Archdiocese with his edifying work for the spiritual growth and salvation of all people. 04.01.2022 St Romanos the Melodist was one of greatest hymnographers of Byzantium. While Romanos wrote hymns for the major feasts of the liturgical calendar, he also composed songs about repentance that were sung during the Lenten journey to Pascha. Our chorister, Dr Andrew Mellas, has translated a selection of these ancient hymns. "Hymns of Repentance", published by SVS Press, features the original Greek text opposite a new English translation.
