16.01.2022 This Thursday, 3rd of December is International Day of People with Disability - Australia! IDPwD is a United Nations observed day celebrated internationally. It... aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions. The SAFC is committed to improving representation in our screen content and inclusion and diversity in our sector. We value ensuring access and equality for all practitioners across the screen sector, and we align to the guiding principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, including respect, equality and non-discrimination. This week, in the lead up to IDPwD we will be profiling some outstanding South Australian creatives on our social as part our our celebrations. On Thursday, you will be able to watch the Australia Council for the Arts National Arts and Disability Awards via the SAFC Facebook page @ 1.30pm ACDT. 14.01.2022 Poet and essayist Fiona Murphy is a recipient of our Arts and Disability Mentoring Initative. She has been widely published in Australian literary magazines and anthologies including Kill Your Darlings, Australian Poetry Journal, The Lifted Brow and in 'Growing up Disabled in Australia'. Her debut memoir, ‘The Shape of Sound’, to be published by Text in 2021, is a collection of personal essays about forming a Deaf identity. The mentorship will allow Fiona to complete her sec...ond manuscript, a psychological thriller with a d/Deaf protagonist. Fiona points out, "Few d/Deaf characters are written by people with lived experience. Deafness is often treated as a metaphor rather than a reality." Fiona has selected mentors who are experts in writing, editing and pitching, and . She will also attend writing residences and conferences to establish a solid writing network. 13.01.2022 Matt Gingold is a transdisciplinary artist, researcher and hacktivist. He is a recipient of our Arts and Disability Mentoring Initiative. His practice has largely been experimental, weaving together creative outcomes in performance, installation and scientific research into perception, machine learning and gesture recognition. Matthew’s mentorship is for the development of creative leadership. Working with Ionat Zurr and Oron Catts from SymbioticA, both supporters of diversit...y and world-leaders in transdisciplinary practice, Matt will expand his practice and transition to creative leadership roles, such as creative producer and artistic director, as well as directly and visibly addressing the challenges of his disability in the workplace.
