23.01.2022 Meet our guest conductor for Hobart: Phillip Taylor. Phillip joined the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 1976 as a violist and continued to perform with that orchestra until 1996. He was contract Principal Violist for several years during which he was involved in many recording and solo projects. He was also a guest violist with the Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras. In 1984 he accepted the position of violist in the Victorian String Quartet, which was an Artist-in-...Residency project established by the Victorian Government to foster a love of chamber music in the regional centres of Victoria. Phillip returned to the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 1985 where he began to develop his conducting skills. He studied with many visiting international conductors who were on tour for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. These conductors were very generous in their willingness and enthusiasm to share their knowledge and experience with Phillip and since then, Phillip has conducted many orchestras around Australia. Indeed, it was through those conductors' encouragement and generosity that the desire to conduct came to the forefront. Phillip became senior conductor of the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra and in 1987 founded the Hobart Chamber Orchestra. Phillip has conducted orchestras ranging from youth orchestras to professional chamber orchestras. The Cleveland Symphony Orchestra is an ensemble which allows Phillip to perform music on a regular basis, and which also provides young talented and local musicians with the opportunity to feature as soloist with the orchestra. This continues the tradition he established with the Hobart Chamber Orchestra. On return to Queensland in 1997, Phillip has been involved in many musical projects including Festival Coordinator for the 4MBS Festival 2000, and founding Musical Director/Conductor of Orchestra Pro Musica. He has been seen on the concert platform as both conductor and chamber musician. Phillip has also continued his tertiary studies mastering in Conducting. In addition, he has maintained his work as a conductor/music director for many youth music projects nurturing and developing our next generation of musicians. Phillip last conducted ADO in Brisbane, 2015, and we are delighted to welcome him back to conduct us in Hobart!

21.01.2022 Otto Respighi (1879-1936) Fontane di Roma Fountains of Rome was Otto Respighi’s breakout hit! The first of his three orchestral tone poems inspired by his adopted city of Rome, it premiered in 1917, and has since been cited as one of the foremost examples of a Symphonic Poem. Each of the four movements depicts one of Rome’s fountains at a different time of day. Imagine yourself at the break of dawn by La Fontana di Valle Giulia as cattle are herded past you to market, bef...ore moving later in the morning to La Fontana del Tritone where nymphs dance and frolic in the morning light. As noon arrives great news from the Gods is celebrated at La Fontana di Trevi before finally you watch the sun set over La Fontana di Villa Medici. Come and be transported to Rome by ADO, it’s much cheaper than a flight to Italy! Tickets available at www.trybooking.com/BCYRR See more

13.01.2022 Scheherazade - Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) The tale of Scheherazade encompasses some of history’s most famous stories, The One Thousand and One Nights, framed within an overarching love story. Once upon a time a king grieved his wife’s infidelity. In his bitterness he vowed to marry anew each day, and execute his wife from the day before! Scheherazade was wife number 1002, and she was no ordinary woman, but intelligent, and courageous.... On their wedding night she began to tell a story to her sister, whilst the king eavesdropped. To his frustration she stopped in the middle as dawn was breaking, so desperate to hear the rest of her tale he spared her life for one more day in order to hear the remainder of the tale the next night. But Scheherazade was cunning, upon finishing the previous tale she began a new one, even more exciting than the first, and so the pattern repeated itself night upon night. By the end of 1001 nights and 1000 stories the king had fallen in love with her, and spared her life, making her his queen. Rimsky-Korsakov immortalised this love story in his most popular work, which features two recurring leitmotifs woven throughout the four movements: the grim bass opening which represents the domineering king, and the tender violin melody depicting the storyteller herself. Come and experience the Arabian Nights with us on Sunday!
