25.01.2022 The Andrews Governments native timber transition plan announced in 2017 is a sham Not one new hectare of land has been planted or an additional nativ...e saw log grade species put in the ground. Native hardwood takes 60 years to mature, yet Daniel Andrews plans to shut the industry in 10 years simple mathematics shows it cant be done. The only state government plantation timber established this year is 250 hectares of blue gum, a species suitable only for pulp, not flooring, furniture and joinery. Closing the native timber industry will cost thousands of jobs. Today I visit Derhams Lane, Maryvale with Victorian Hardwood Sawmillers Association spokesperson and Fenning Timber CEO, Leonard Fenning planted with unsuitable blue gum. This is not the future of the native timber industry. Under the Andrews Government planned closure, Victorians only option will be to import inferior unregulated rainforest timber. The Andrews Government must abandon its flawed timber policy. As a Nationals MP, I will continue to fight against this disastrous plan. #vicnats #supportnativetimberjobs #sustainableresource Australian Forest Products Association Australian Forests & Timber News

23.01.2022 A new study by landscape scientists has found bushfires, not native forest harvesting, is the biggest threat to the endangered leadbeaters possum. This new research raises questions about the science used to back Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews decision to end native forest timber harvesting in 2030. and AFPA is calling on him to reverse the decision.

23.01.2022 Today I called on the Andrews Labor Government to deliver a genuine commitment and investment to support secure and permanent jobs for the native timber industr...y in Gippsland with Jane Oakley, CEO Committee for Gippsland. The Andrews Labor Government needs to explain how their announcement to establish a seedling nursery today will replace Victoria’s world class sustainable native timber industry in only 10 years. Any seedling planted today will not be ready for saw log harvest until 2050, yet Daniel Andrews is determined to close the industry by 2030 - an industry that employees 21,000 people and contributes in excess of $7.3 billion to our economy. The state government need to push reset on their thinking as their timber transition plan is a sham. COVID-19 has taught us is that we must support and invest in local manufacturing jobs. Instead of encouraging the importation of timber from third world countries the Premier must support timber workers and our incredible homegrown high end hardwood products produced right here in Victoria. 21.01.2022 The Federal Court’s judgment on the Tasmanian Regional Forest Agreement is a win for Australia’s forestry industry. It was great to be with Ross Hampton and V...ictor Violante from Australian Forest Products Association as the news came through this morning. Forestry supports the livelihoods of thousands of Tasmanian men and women, and it's the lifeblood of many of our regional communities. Protesters branded this the ‘Great Forest Case’, and the court has found exactly that, confirming that our forestry industry is great.

14.01.2022 Back in Tumbarumba meeting with timber workers (Hi Sam and Matt) at the Hyne Timber Mill with Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Resources, Ed Husic MP. The fo...restry industry in the South West Slopes supports over 5,000 jobs or one in every two jobs in the region and creates $2 billion in economic activity per annum. The 2019/20 bushfires took out 40% of the mill's local plantation pine supply. Through discussions with private growers, the industry has identified alternative log supplies. These private growers have confirmed that at least 441,000m3 of sustainably grown, plantation pine can be made available over the next three years. Because the logs are situated in other states, one sticking point is the cost of transporting the logs to local mills. Neither the NSW nor Federal Government currently has a mechanism for supporting the idea because grant programs don’t include transport costs. The South West Slopes community needs this solution. I have already spoken with my colleagues in government as have the Australian Forest Products Association. The industry and the community have a plan and now we need the NSW and Federal Governments to back it in. I will keep working with anyone and everyone to help bring about a positive result. Ed and I were only too happy to join the Timberfortumba campaign.

13.01.2022 Bob Brown must accept the decision of the court and heed his own advice: ‘It is time we moved on’. It’s time Bob Brown and the Greens moved on from the coupes a...nd the courtroom. 03.01.2022 I recently met with Ross Hampton, CEO of the Australian Forest Products Association. We talked about the government’s $40 million Forestry Recovery Development ...Fund and the need to get this money at work in communities like Eden, Tumbarumba, Tumut, Bombala, and surrounds following our bushfires. The fund, announced in June by the Prime Minister, is designed to support timber processors and the industry as a whole adjust to a new future. Fire-affected mills and the many Eden-Monaro jobs they support face significant challenges over the next 20-30 years. As Ross said, "Eden-Monaro is the forestry electorate" I look forward to working with the industry and making sure this fund does the job we need it to.
