24.01.2022 Australia Awards Alumnus, Losafou Ampelosa, is a lawyer at the Office of the People’s Lawyer. In 2018, through an Australia Awards Pacific Scholarship, Losafou graduated from the University of the South Pacific (USP) with a Bachelor of Arts (Geography) and Law. Her scholarship allowed her to study at both the Vanuatu and Fiji USP campus’, creating strong regional networks. Losafou considers her overall #Australiaawards experience as transformational, my studies provided an... invaluable insight into the workings of a law firm and how I can serve my people better with the skills and legal knowledge I have attained. I also got to boost my legal credentials through court visits and networking sessions. This learning sparked Losafou’s determination to make a difference; advocating for legislation that ensures the protection of Tuvalu’s people, island communities, marine ecosystems and land resources. Losafou now aspires to expand her knowledge in climate change mitigation to better understand and support Tuvalu’s climate change laws. Climate change has always been a national threat to the islands of Tuvalu. So, one of the important aspects that needs to be properly developed is new standalone legislation that strengthens Tuvalu's response to climate change and its impacts. We’re confident Losafou will continue to make positive developments in Tuvalu’s legal and climate changes sectors. #Australiaawards #law #land The University of the South Pacific Australia Awards

20.01.2022 World Diabetes Day is celebrated on 14 November each year to raise awareness of the health threats posed by diabetes. This year’s theme ‘Nurses make the difference for diabetes’ clearly defines the dedication and hard work of Tuvaluan nurses, especially during COVID-19. The health department did an amazing job in organising a week of awareness programs and activities, including health check-ups in Ministries, and food demonstrations for the preparation of healthy meals. Members of the Australian High Commission made sure to complete their health checks as a diabetes preventative measure. Diabetes is a common non- communicable disease in Tuvalu, and we need to work together to address this serious health issue which is impacting many families.

05.01.2022 In celebrating World Food Day today, we recognise a very talented and enthusiastic local agriculture expert. Meet Ioane Kennedy from the island of Vaitupu. Ioane previously worked as a security guard for USP, and voluntarily looked after the garden at the campus when he could. This helped him to develop his talent and passion for gardening, which was recognised by Live & Learn who now employ him full time as a Project Extension Agriculture officer. Over time, Ioane has noti...ced that with substantial population growth on the main island, there has been an increase in dependency on imported food, and a decrease in usage of local food produce. Ioane is a ‘local champion’ for agriculture, and believes in healthy sustainable living for all and encourages more outdoor gardening in Tuvalu. He is now responsible for training and community outreach, delivering educational lessons in local food production. supports access to safe, affordable and nutritious food in the Pacific and engages Live and Learn to implement this food security program in Tuvalu. While currently located in Funafuti it will soon expand to Nukufetau and Nukulaelae. We thank the Department of Agriculture and Funafuti Kaupule for their support in making this program a success. And most importantly, without the support of local champions like Ioane, this project would not succeed. Thank you Ioane .

04.01.2022 Australia is proud to partner with Tuvalu to support Tau Maketi. The first event for this year will be held on Friday, 29 January at Vaiaku Maneapa- hall. One of the stall holders at Tau Maketi will be Pua Vaisua, a dedicated and hardworking mother of five from Funafuti. Pua runs a small business from home selling local handicrafts. Pua started her business in 1993, selling necklaces at the airport. Her husband was away working and she needed additional income to support her... children's education, electricity and groceries. With COVID-19 closing borders and disrupting flights, Pua's business has been impacted. However, with great support from her husband and children, she has continued to sell earrings from home to local customers. Pua saw a wider demand in the market for earrings and continued to make beautiful earrings to suit her customer's preferences. Tau Maketi is a huge opportunity for her to promote and sell her products and expand her business. With this additional exposure, Pua has received private orders of earrings from local community groups, including young women. Pua continues to work hard to support her family- her passion and talent can be seen in each item. She is excited about the upcoming Tau Maketi, and is thinking of expanding her business in selling more local handicrafts such as bedding, sasa (wooden brooms made from coconuts) and homeware. Come and see Pua at Tau Maketi and buy some of her beautiful items.
