24.01.2022 Congratulations to Rosemary Kariuki on becoming the NSW Local Hero for 2021! Rosemary is a multicultural community liaison officer. She specialises in helping migrants who are facing domestic violence, language barriers and financial distress. She also works as a Swahili language interpreter with the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National). Fleeing Kenya alone in 1999 to escape family abuse and tribal clashes, her early years in Australia were terribly lonely. Her... experience helped Rosemary recognise that isolation is a huge issue for many migrant women. In partnership with the African Women’s Group, she helped start the African Women’s Dinner Dance, which helps women leave their house and meet other women in similar circumstances. We are proud to be sponsors of the Australian of the Year Local Hero Award thanks to compassionate people like Rosemary. To find out more about Rosemary’s story, visit: https://www.australianoftheyear.org.au//rosemary-kar/2349/ Stay tuned to Australian of the Year Awards as they continue to share the live stream of each State and Territory ceremony.
