25.01.2022 The GMA is conducting helicopter surveys across Victoria to monitor the abundance of game duck populations to help ensure duck hunting remains sustainable. The ...aerial surveys are part of a trial to test and evaluate the effectiveness of a new monitoring program design to count duck numbers on Victorian water bodies and beyond. Experienced wildlife biologists will be recording the presence and number of game ducks on wetlands, sewerage ponds and farm dams. The survey will be used in future to inform adaptive harvest management to set sustainable duck season arrangements. The surveys will take place from 6 November 2020 to 15 November 2020. Residents in the areas where the surveys will take place may see a helicopter flying at low levels for a short time. For a map of the flight paths and more information about the survey trial, visit: https://bit.ly/3kVDuXp

23.01.2022 People are urged to report illegal hunting, such as poaching and breaches of public safety laws, to the GMA through its website at https://bit.ly/3f49Tai, the C...ustomer Contact Centre on 136 186 or by contacting Victoria Police. Activities such as illegal spotlighting will not be tolerated as it is extremely dangerous and can put people and wildlife at risk. Offenders can be fined or prosecuted, have equipment such as vehicles and firearms seized and / or lose their Game and Firearms Licences. If you are unsure of Victorias game hunting laws, please read chapter nine of the Game Hunting Manual: https://bit.ly/3g4wGnM REMEMBER: If you live in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire, you cannot leave metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire for sporting or recreational activities - recreational hunting is not a permitted reason to visit outside these areas. This is an important step to help us slow the spread of the virus.

21.01.2022 Written permission conditions changing from next week The general written permission conditions will change from next week, giving you more clarity around r...ules for State forest hunting. These are the standard conditions that apply to all State forest hunting. Some changes for pig doggers include: the ability to hunt at night with dogs whilst having a firearm or bows stored securely no longer required to have UHF radio when hunting at night can now hunt alone at night with dogs, no longer need to be part of a group. The conditions also now include information regarding the use of drones while hunting on public land. You must also read your written permission carefully for any specific conditions relating to the forest you have booked. You can read the full written permission conditions on our website www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//permission-conditions-hunting-in-nsw-s. 10.01.2022 R-Licensed hunters - don’t book unless you intend to hunt and cancel if you can’t make it. Keep the system fair for everyone! Complaints about booked out forest...s with no one on the ground are increasing. As a result, your intention to hunt is now covered by a general written permission condition, which means breaching this condition is an offence and a range of penalties may apply. Let's keep the system open for all R-Licence hunters who are lucky enough to find time to hunt! Read the revised written permission conditions on our website - www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//permission-conditions-hunting-in-nsw-s

08.01.2022 Our Game Officers teamed up with Victoria Police to conduct patrols in Gippsland last weekend, targeting illegal hunting. Officers spoke to a number of hunters ...and local residents in and around areas such as Omeo, Swifts Creek, Bindi, Ensay, Limstone Creek, Omeo Valley, Cassills, Doctors Flat, Gibbo River and Mount Hotham. While the majority of hunters were acting safely and responsibly enjoying their weekend in the bush, a number of offences were detected. These included illegal spotlighting and firearms offences and two men are currently under investigation and had firearms, spotlights and thermal imaging equipment seized. The GMA and Victoria Police will continue to identify, intercept and prosecute people hunting in an illegal and dangerous manner. People are urged to report illegal hunting, such as poaching and breaches of public safety laws, to the GMA through its website at https://bit.ly/3f49Tai, the Customer Contact Centre on 136 186 or by contacting Victoria Police.

07.01.2022 Investing in new tools to tackle the threat of feral cats on our native wildlife Last week, the Australian Government announced it had committed $2 million t...o upscale the production of two feral cat control tools, the Curiosity bait for feral cats and Felixer Grooming Traps. The Curiosity bait for feral cats is a small sausage with a hard plastic pellet containing a humane toxin (para-aminopropiophenone, or PAPP). The bait has been designed to minimise the risk to native animals. A hard pellet limits access by animals other than cats. The Felixer Grooming trap is an innovative and automated tool to help control feral cats and foxes. This tool uses sensors to distinguish target cats and foxes from non-target wildlife and humans and sprays the targets with a measured dose of toxic gel. Across Australia the toll of feral cats on our remarkable wildlife is significant. According to Australia's leading scientists each day, more than 3.1 million mammals, 1 million birds and 1.7 million reptiles are killed by cats across Australia. More information about these tools and feral cats can be found at http://environment.gov.au//feral-animals-austra/feral-cats : Felixer cat traps being trialed at Pullen Pullen reserve.
