05.01.2022 http:// THE 2020 BENCHMARK OF GREEN COVER IN OUR CITIES AND SUBURBS // Greener Spaces Better Places has just released part one of its third national benchmarking report, Where Will All The Trees Be?. Once more it uses the i-tree methodology to understand the overall urban green cover trends across urban LGAs as well as delves into how local government areas of a similar ’type’ - according to rainfall, population and density - are faring. ... Already results indicate that 62% of urban local government areas now have more urban green cover than they did in 2016, however the overall decline in green space persists with 69% or urban spaces having seen a decline since 2013. This is in spite of more than 80% of the councils surveyed saying that they have an urban forestry (or equivalent) plan in place. As part of the release, there is an interactive online tool that provides council and the broader community to understand canopy within their own area. Part Two of this report will be released in the coming weeks and take a more detailed look into what key challenges and opportunities facing local government urban greening programs, this is a result of an in-depth national survey.
